I wanted to add, I replaced this part OEM three times and still blew three times. Problem was the connectors were corroded and letting moisture in the solenoid. I replaced the connectors and used some high heat, gasket maker to top off the connectors avoiding moisture going in. If you keep putting in new solenoid and they fail, check for corrosion on the two connector clips. That is your problem, not the solenoid itself.
Usually I can't see what's going on in these kinds of videos, but she put a camera in the engine and I could see exactly what she was doing. That shows dedication and care. Keep up the good work!
Sue is the best. I'm always excited to see 1A Auto videos with her. I just replaced the VTEC Solenoid yesterday and the engine light is gone. Thank you!
I loved that you could see exactly what she was doing. I wish there was an angle, only for a moment, that showed how she was reaching in... where to put my arms.
Thanks, Sue!! Your video was critical to my success today! I replaced the solenoind in our 2006 Element. It's so rare to see a woman in car repair videos!!! I'm pretty darn good at repairs, and I really got a boost of confidence seeing a fellow woman on the job. Thanks!!
This is an amazing video yes she put a mirror on the back side so that we can see what's going on and she walks you through every step of the whole process showing you how not to overtook torque the bolts showing you how to take off all the connectors I mean this is perfect thank you for making this video and I love the fact that she's a woman because never underestimate the ability the creativity and the intelligence of a woman because they can do anything
Not sure if everybody caught that. After she loosened the first bolt and then moved on to the second, she stuck her other hand in and continued to loosen the first one while simultaneously working on the second one with the ratchet. This may not seem significant, but that is a sign of a total experienced professional.
got a solenoid faulit in my 08 element after hitting a deep puddle on my passenger side (US element). never had the fault before. this video helped me find the solenoid, and confirmed my suspicion that water got into the connector(s). i pulled the connectors off. hit them both (and the solenoid pins) with electrical parts cleaner. let dry. then some dielectric grease. so far so good after a few hundred miles. time will tell.
I just did this job twice (swapped the Solenoid between my CRV and E). I would highly recommend NOT removing the cable ties from the tin cover- just unbolt the one screw holding the cover to the solenoid and attach your new solenoid to the old cover. I really struggled to get the cable ties out and at one point was seriously damaging one- plus my hands were cramping. I'm glad I simply left the cables tied off to the cover.
This is incredible that because that little screen gets dirty then the car starts acting losing power jumping like a wild horse and very dangerous when driving in the highway and you need the power to speed it up. !!!!!
MrWilsonxD Yea, my 04 Element is leaking oil now. P2646 code popped up, which is the solenoid. If I would’ve know that this was a problem with the VTech engines, I wouldn’t have purchased it.
Don't get anything except OEM for this part. You'll regret it like me. Did this 5 times( aftermarket had a warranty, thank God) OEM works like it should. Ugh. Good luck!
The second solenoid connector (around 1:00) is more rounded and I'm not feeling a tab on it like the square one has. Is there a trick to this one? I noticed a cut in the video so I assume this one's a little more tricky.
How do i tell if i need to replace this unit, or simply replace the gasket and a new screen? My check enine light did come on. Thanks for info and video.
I would first clean the screen and put everything back together hopefully that works if not then you will have to take it back off and buy a new solenoid
Where is the shift solenoid on the Element 05 or is it the same as the Vtecj solenoid? Someone please help is it outside of the transmission or inside of transmission?🙁
Hi, Sue your video helps a lot thank so much,l replace that part you talking about on your video but my Honda Element 2003 but the car still doing the same thing, when I try to spend on normal operation of the car don't want to go, can you tell me if there's something else l need to do to fix it, please let me know.
I did notice that she didn't remove the pin lock for the oil pressure sensor and replace it back in the connector that can cause problems in the future like wire coming out and letting moisture in

+Christopher Chavez Take note of these three common symptoms of a bad solenoid: Vehicle won't start. Starter solenoid fails to reset even after switching the car off. Bad starter solenoid sound (successive clicking or grinding sound)
On mine, you get a hard downshift while driving and a P2646 i think code. One case was low oil. Other case appears to be a bad gasket on the vtec part. But yeah. The Vtec tells vehicle how to shift, so you can get some weird symptoms when that screen gets clogged.
Buy a new screen (gasket)! Solenoid rarely goes out, but just a little obstruction in the screens will put your engine into limp mode making it LOOK like the whole assembly is bad.
It is not the VTEC solenoid most of the time, called do an oil change using a high quality oil filter.Cheap oil filters cause this and encountered it at least 3 times
+Patrick Sison Thanks for checking us out. We would not carry the hardware for this specific repair. You should be able to get new hardware from a local auto parts store or re-use the existing hardware if they are in good condition.
Ms.Sue, why not advice the price for that part at A1? I swapped my solenoid on my 05 element after OBD code 2646..after install unit Crank immediately, I shut off degrees that side of engine and 24hrs later after sitting unit fail to start...removed solenoid with old one that flag OBD code...unit still will not start... turns over killing battery, but will not start? please any advice? Kim, Florida
+Kim Juno We wouldn't be able to diagnose an issue like that here, you may want to have a local mechanic take a look at it. Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
They make special sockets for rounded bolts. The sockets have teeth that dig in to the bolt and grip it. Just go to a tool store and ask for help. They'll know what you need. PS your bolt probably got rounded off by using the wrong socket. Use a 6 point socket of the correct size, next time. Not a crescent wrench, either.

I love watching Sue working on Honda Elements. Thanks so much..

I was looking for the foot pounds torque on the bolts and your video delivered. TY!
Great video. I watched a bunch and this one was the most complete and helpful. Just. Changed mine successfully. Thanks
Thanks for this!
I have a 2009 2.4l Honda Accord with the same exact engine was able to do it myself. 😊
Excellent tutorial and very good camera work to show the task in detail. 👍👍
This is incredible that because that little screen gets dirty then the car starts acting losing power jumping like a wild horse and very dangerous when driving in the highway and you need the power to speed it up. !!!!!
"parts clean" ? What are you cleaning up afterward?
Thanks for the video. Keeping elements alive is a worthy task.
Es de gran ayuda el video muchas gracias solo falta que explique el porque lo cambian que hace el carro cuando está fallando el i-Vtec
She is easy to understand.
Thank you for this video! It's great having the camera behind the engine to see what's going on
Awesome job on this video. Thank you!
Thanks Sue! 😊🙌 Simple, straightforward
It's funny. I just talked to a guy at Firestone about how he did this on his Element and it's something to watch out for on these cars.

Can you make a video on changing the second VTEC screen located behind the power steering pump?
Sue you're so great. Thx!
What were the symptoms of that part been bad??
The second solenoid connector (around 1:00) is more rounded and I'm not feeling a tab on it like the square one has. Is there a trick to this one? I noticed a cut in the video so I assume this one's a little more tricky.
That's the best way to look at a bolt..."visually"...
When this solenoid is bad, does the vehicle start like jolting when is warmed up?
I got a P2646 code from the computer. Thank you!
Thank you. Very helpful video.
How much would this cost to have done at a garage? Mine needs to be replaced, but I don’t want to attempt it myself

Was it a bad part that was new by chance?
Threre’s a second screen that might be clogged. It’s located in the front of the engine, by the alternator.
Sometimes it's the connector for the vtec oil pressure switch! Mine was really corroded and I needed to replace the connector
Will this always trip a code?
Thanks boss lady
Are you laying on top of the engine? 😂. I had to. I could not reach good at all.
I did notice that she didn't remove the pin lock for the oil pressure sensor and replace it back in the connector that can cause problems in the future like wire coming out and letting moisture in
Great videos. Thanks Sue.
I’m getting a code of p2647, is this the kind of repair that will clear that code?
Nice job. !!!!
2004 automatic element talks longer time to shift 1 to 2 and 2 to 3 speed .. do I need replace this solenoid ?
great video thankyou now to change mine
+B4 W Thank you! We love empowering our customers and showing how to perform DIY auto repairs with our high-quality auto parts. 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
What type of ratchet are you using???
I was wondering the same thing I like it because you can get a better angle with it
How do you know if you have a bad solenoid or it needs to be replaced?
+Christopher Chavez Take note of these three common symptoms of a bad solenoid:

+@l-gool_t Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
Do we have to remove the oil before doing this ?
No
No but you should change this part or clean the screen before you do an oil change
Two Elements, both eventually went into "limp mode" with associated code(s) - VTEC Assembly (OEM) R&R solved both...\m/
I did this job and it’s still leaking, very likely I overtorqued the bolts, thanks
Buy a new screen (gasket)! Solenoid rarely goes out, but just a little obstruction in the screens will put your engine into limp mode making it LOOK like the whole assembly is bad.
Oh no I cleaned my part with brake cleaner. I thought it would be all evaporated by the time I put it back on what should I do now!?
I have change this gasket 4 times and still leaks oil !!! 😫😫😭😭 What can I do to stop this leak?
Clean off the mating surfaces and don't over tork
so what are the mechanics doing the rest of the hour i paid them for? lol
the bill
It is not the VTEC solenoid most of the time, called do an oil change using a high quality oil filter.Cheap oil filters cause this and encountered it at least 3 times
Dirty oil will cause the screen 4:07 to plug up.
Do you guys carry replacement mounting hardware for the vvt?
+Patrick Sison Thanks for checking us out. We would not carry the hardware for this specific repair. You should be able to get new hardware from a local auto parts store or re-use the existing hardware if they are in good condition.
I had the same thought, those rusted bolts could have been replaced with new ones.
Why have you replaced the whole solenoid when the rubber gasket was rubbish only?
Does this fix check engine code ps511?
What’s your part# please

Can you remove this part without draining the oil?
Yes
What happend when that part goes bad?
Probably over torqued by someone attempting to reduce the oil leak.
Very stupid Honda design. !!!! So what is the reason to have an oil filter. ???? V-etc plus another screen by the timing belt side. !!!!!
Looks like this is a very easy job !! It is not. !!!!!!
I like how you guys show how easy repairs are by having a woman do the repairs
Yep. If she can do it, anybody can do it.
Or maybe the woman is the most competent mechanic....
