Did you ever see the Philippines as a homogenous country or a diverse one? Or are we somewhere in between? 🤔
I think there must be some mistakes in that Harvard research I looked into it and the data was taken by surveys asking people how they personally classify themselves, I think a flaw would be if the people didn't understand what ethnicity means because we have so many diverse social groups and cultural traditions. also that map is based on a research published in 2002 so the data could be more than 20 plus years old. also another flaw is it just looks at the people inside the country and counts diaspora population as diversity for rich countries that overseas workers live in.
@@Fealnographs1 No worries! I was aware that the data was 20 years old, but it's the most relevant one we can find so far with regards to the topic. I was supposed to place a line in the script saying "However, the data must have changed in the recent years" but it would be too big of a claim without evidence. ☺️ In the end as a Filipino person who's lived in the Philippines and abroad, the video's takeaway of Filipinos being diverse, yet having a big percentage of decendants from Austronesian-speaking migrants was a clear and true enough statement.
Diversity is differences in racial and ethnic, socioeconomic, geographic, and academic/professional backgrounds. People with different opinions, backgrounds (degrees and social experience), religious beliefs, political beliefs, sexual orientations, heritage, and life experience ---- spain,america,korea,chinese,japanese,india, etc pilipino tend to practice and follow some of those when it comes to religious beliefs, life experience so.. i can say its a diverse

I agree with Natty. I'm a Filipino, and I went to tour Thailand. From the airport I kept mistaking some Thai women as FIlipinos because of the similarities in our physical appearance.

Because I've been to different countries and it was never really like, "oh I know I look like them," or "oh this is how they look like." It's more like "Is that a Filipino?" because it's human nature to try and recognize something familiar in a non-familiar place.

@min.j anong study that Filipinos are 95% ethnic? That's propaganda, there has never been a study. They just classified the population into Cebuano, Ilocano, etc. ethnicities but didn't classify the bloodlines of the Filipinos. There are no racial censuses in the Philippines, forbidden by the American & Filipino governments. Only the Spaniards has THE ACTUAL CENSUS because they classified the population according to race. In 1798, 50% of the Philippine population then were Spanish hybrids. You can see this in the Cebuano ethnicity, the reason many foreigners are camping in Cebu because they believe the Cebuanos are the most Hispanic looking among Filipinos (meaning, most attractive), the pure natives are not really that attractive

I'm a Filipino that gets often confused as someone from an east asian country.
To me, it's diversity depends on its location, just like with any diverse countries. If you look into the more populated areas you will see the different looks but if you go to the provinces (especially on the secluded ones) then you will see a lot more of the native Filipino look.
South Japanese people have some Austronesian features most likely from the Yayoi tribe from the olden days. 1 subgroup of the Yayoi tribe went south for the warm climate. We’re all related just VERY distant. The region is called East Asia and South East Asia for a reason. Mixing over the years happened and how much of that depends on proximity/trade routes. People just deny because they’re ethnocentric
Okinanawans look similar to Filipinos as well as Taiwanese aborigines too.

It may be true because most of the filipinos mix with other blood especially american are actually beautiful but there are still pure filipinos who are so handsome and beautiful like christine reyes, Sanya lopez, Jak Roberto, Jericho rosales, fino Herrera, and many others
Filipinos looking physically similar to Indonesians, Malays, and some Pacific islanders shouldn't come as a surprise by now, since we all share the same Austronesian ancestors. Culturally and Linguistically, all 4, plus the non-African natives of Madagascar, are grouped under the Austronesian language family. Take note that the "Malay race", which Filipino students have been taught that Filipinos belong to, is no longer an accepted term, as "Austronesian" is the updated and expounded term, thus more appropriate.
In the case of Mestizos (take note that "Mestizo" originally referred to any Biracial Filipino, which includes but not limited to Spanish and Chinese mestizos), I think the actual amount of mixing with the natives that happened in the PH during colonial times is OVERESTIMATED. One has to remember that the Philippines isn't actually a white settler colony, and that mixing of the Natives with the Spanish only happened at the higher portion of the upper class society. Nevertheless, those families who remained here until independence still had undeniable influence until today (e.g. the Zobel de Ayalas, the Aranetas, the various political dynasties established by old money rich Mestizo families, etc.)
So yeah, Filipinos with Mestizo heritage dating from the Colonial times(except for the Fil-Chinese), would NOT be a common sight in any streets you go to in the Philippines. They are more commonly seen on TV, in big businesses, and in Politics.
Mestizo only means biracial-European to indiginous who are your asian ancestors. Austronesians mix or pure are not indiginous they came from Guam, Fiji that originated from PNG & Australian aborine hence the name "Austro". PH indiginous are the East Asians since the Ice Age when East Asia/SEA was 1 island Taiwan-PH & Filipinos had their own ancestors from the oriental realm

I thought that the origin of Austronesians came from the island of Taiwan then the migratory direction were to head south first to the nearest Lands which is Northern part of the Philippines then further downwards south to the Visayan Islands and eventually scattering to IndoChina, Indonesia and the Polynesian island chains.

All you said was correct. To add, many Filipinos (although not the majority) have Chinese ancestry due to intermarriages that happened even before the Spanish colonization. Also, there were many Chinese (not all) that migrated to PH who chose to adopt Spanish or locally derived surnames during Spanish colonization.

@@randomcarrot7970 Yes, I agree. although it is also interesting to note that much of the Chinese weren't allowed (or instead were imposed harsh restrictions) by the Spanish government to settle outside Manila until the second half of the Spanish occupation. And once they were finally allowed to thrive into the Provinces like Pampanga, Cebu, Iloilo etc., this coincided with the rise in influence of the Chinese Mestizos, that they managed to acquire swathes of lands from the failing Native Principalia by either buying from or intermarriaging with them. They surely worked their way up! 😁
Here in Malaysia, Locals thought I was Chinese. I experienced it most of the time with Chinese people. When I go buy on Chinese store, they will speak to me in Chinese Language. But When I start to speak. They will say... You are a Filipino- that is because of the Accent.
The 1st one the Thai girl was correct, Filipinos are diverse because it is only a Nationality not ethnicity, There are more than Hundreds or even thousands ethnic groups in the Philippines and each one of them has a unique culture and appearance.
The Philippines indeed have a lot of ethnic groups but most of them are actually Austronesians (who more or less looked the same).

@@randomcarrot7970 At least almost 30% of the population have East Asian genes noticeable enough on their physical features (lighter skin and monolid eyes but not as glowingly pale as North Chinese, Japanese, or Koreans maybe due to the Philippine weather).
At least a total of 50% of the population have East Asian genes/ancestry but the other 20% in this 50% have unnoticeable physical features (mostly with natural tanned skin and double lids but can still be mistaken as Chinese in China or by untrained foreign eyes since other Chinese, especially Southerners, can have the same features).
Whenever I’m in China, I get treated as a local. Many local strangers come to me to ask for directions thinking I’m a local too. I sat beside a group of white people, a Chinese staff spoke to them in English but that same Chinese staff spoke to me in Mandarin. And then we both laughed when I told her I do not speak Chinese.
In Japan, I sat beside Filipinos with a Japanese tour guide. I didn’t reveal to these Filipinos that I’m also Filipino. The Japanese tour guide talked to me in Japanese whenever he asks me to fall in line first before them. Maybe it was technically not because I look Japanese, but instead since the Japanese tour guide was clueless about my nationality, and since I look East Asian, she spoke to me in Japanese. And the rest of staff from different stores did the same. They suddenly became silent the moment I started speaking English.
In Taiwan, I thought that a woman sitting in front of me was a Taiwanese local. She was wearing a trench/overcoat which is common for Taiwanese women to wear during winter. She is monolid and her skin is fair. When I heard her speak Tagalog, that was the only time I knew she’s also a kababayan (fellow countryman).
In Malaysia, same thing, they spoke to me in Malay. In Singapore, I once ate in a restaurant around Marina Bay. I didn’t know that the waitress is Filipina (she’s fair skinned Malay looking) although I had a guess because of her accent. I wanted to ask her nationality but it will be too awkward and unprofessional. Regardless, she spoke English to me. When I paid using my credit card issued by a Philippine bank, that’s the only time she asked and knew that I’m Filipino.
Finally, in the Philippines, they just talk to me in Tagalog. Maybe because I wear clothes the Filipino way whenever I’m here and technically, Manila has many chinitos and chinitas that’s why they just assume I’m Filipino based on my clothes and actions. Some staff in Jollibee have mistaken some Chinese migrants as Filipinos. I’ve noticed that if you are chinky and your skin is pale but not as smooth and glowy as those of typical Korean’s or Chinese’s, they’ll just assume you are Filipino chinito, especially if their eyes are trained enough to distinguish the fashion styles of East Asian migrants from Filipino chinitos.
Same in Visayas, they just talk to me in Cebuano without knowing I’m from Luzon.
It’s like comparing North Europeans and South Europeans, Scandinavian Whites and Meditteranean Whites, and to a greater extent, Whites, Arabs, and Indians too.
An English Man going to France without speaking a single English word might be mistaken as a local. A meditteranean looking woman from Sweden might be mistaken as a local in Italy or Spain. It’s the same thing within East and Southeast Asia.
You cannot generalize that a certain nationality has a specific feature because just like the example above, they are all caucasians, their physical features also overlap. If the Indian is light skinned enough, he can be mistaken as an Arab or White too.
Same with Asians. Both East Asians and Southeast Asians are in Mongol race. If the Asian is fairer and monolid, you may assume he is East Asian even if some SEAs look the same. If the Asian is tanned and monolid, you may assume he’s also from China, Japan, or somewhere in SEA. If the Asian is dark skinned and not monolid, you may assume he’s from Southeast Asia, but dark skinned Chinese, Japanese, and Koreans also exists. I’ve seen a significant no. of North Koreans with dark skinned and monolid eyes. Does that mean they do not have East Asian ancestry just because they’re dark? They might even be the purest since North Korea has remained untouched by foreign influences for half a century.
Nationality, even ethnicity, is not generally based on race or appearance because they overlap. Humans are natural nomads. Once they migrate and settle, generation 3 and up will just forget that their ancestors were migrants and assume that they are pure blooded regardless of their appearance.
The Harvard study is absolute BS. 95% "Filipino" doesn't make sense because Filipino is a nationality, not ethnicity. There are 180 different ethnic groups in the Philippines, each with their own language.

There are indeed many ethnic groups in the Philippines but most are actually Austronesians (who more or less look the same). It is definitely not a shame if we aren't actually as "diverse" as what we think. South Korea is even far from diverse but they are still very proud of their own identity. That's something we should learn from them.
@@randomcarrot7970 Austronesians aren't all the same ethnic group. That would be like saying a Maori and a Filipino are the same ethnic group just because they're both Austronesians. And most Filipinos have varying degrees of Negrito ancestry, which contributes to our diversity. You can look full black and still be Filipino. You can look full Chinese. You can look full Spanish.

Look at this new study called "Multiple migrations to the Philippines during the last 50,000 years" It found that all the groups of Filipinos they tested had Negrito ancestry EXCEPT Igorots- who remained pure Austronesian. The reason is because the Igorots settled high in the mountains. Negritos are all over the country, not just Luzon (Agta, Dumagat, Aeta tribes). You can find them in the Visayas (Ati tribes), Mindanao (Mamanwa), Palawan (Batak). Also, Negritos didn't preserve their culture as much as you think. They don't even speak their original languages anymore. They all adopted Austronesian languages. So they weren't as isolated as you think. They were absorbed into the Austronesian population, which is why their numbers are low now. But most Filipinos have their admixture.
Negrito admixture is why Filipinos have diverse looks. You have someone who looks like chef Sheldon Simeon who is 100% Filipino but looks completely different from Filipino actor Manny Jacinto. And they both look different from Filipino chef Jordan Andino. Put them all side by side and they have completely different features. But they're all 100% Filipino

Filipinos are really accepting culture especially if you speak the language. You don't just see full blooded PINOYS like ROBI DOMINGO as tv hosts or especially models. Many Biracial Pinoys part british like Edward Barber & Enrique Gil is German/Spanish on his dad side etc with alot of the beauty queens etc. And since Philippines were colonized by USA over 50 years ago they have been more English influenced which you can see or detect in pinoy slang, neibor Asian countries come to PH to learn English and most pinoys 1st names are English sounding (:
Our names are highly influenced by Spanish. Like De La Torre, Salazar, De La Cruz, Libranda, Marquez, Montecido, Monteverde and so on.

I’m Filipino and even Filipinos here in Japan can’t tell I’m Filipino. They assume I’m American, either Hawaiian or Mexican. Then they get surprised when I start talking in Tagalog lol. They’re not wrong. When I was working in a fast food restaurant surrounded by Mexicans, many thought I was Mexican. Specially when I spoke Spanish with them since then I was very fluent in Spanish. When I was living in Hawaii, Hawaiians thought I was a local also so I usually get kama’aina discount which is a discount for local people. I didn’t take advantage of it cuz I was getting the same discounts anyway by either proving I’m a service member or that I have resident ID. So yah, if fellow Filipinos can’t tell if I’m Filipino or not, it’s easy to say that our look is very diverse.

Filipinos are very diverse. Some may look like Chinese, Korean, from Arab countries, etc and some have light complexions & others have dark complexions. And about the nose, they differ. It's hard to tell.
I'm a filipina and that is based on what I observed.

Living here in the US, many have thought that I was Hispanic. It was ok at first but as I repeatedly get asked and refered to as one, telling me I didnt look like Filipino, I felt offended as if my nationality connotes inferiority.
Same..when I visited LA, they thought I’m Latino. Someone even asked me a question in Spanish. Lol
There is so much confusion with the terms "Hispanic" and "Latino". Latinos are those who speak a language that descended from or was heavily influenced by Latin. So Italians, French, Romanians are also considered Latinos. Hispanic refers to those whose culture was influenced by Spain, so by this definition, yes we Filipinos are also hispanic. He estado estudiando español y aprendiendo mucho también sobre nuestro identidad, herencia, y cultura. Espero que algún día, español sería una idioma oficial de Filipinas como inglés.
If there is a group of Asians from different countries talking together, the one laughing a lot and telling jokes is the Filipino. The one person who gets to befriend almost everyone easily is the Filipino. Filipinos simply have outgoing and relaxed personality. Of course there are exceptions but I am talking about the majority here.
There's a lot of myths being a "Filipino".
Unlike Chinese, Japanese or Koreans that can be both a race and a nationality, "Filipino" is not a race. It's just a nationality.
Just like being "American" is not a race. It's just a nationality.
Not true Filipino became their own culture just like all the other SEA countries are who have similar ancestors. More diverse yes but still their own culture not anyone else's anymore. Philippines is independent. Many countries in Asia have also been colonized by Europeans (mainly British and French) if not by other Asians. Koreans & Chinese mostly by the Japanese.

You are trying to one trying to tear down & belittle Pinoys who I am defending. Here in America there are a multiple of races & creeds. We identify ourselves as Mexican-American (as Latino), Filipino-American (who identify as Asian) and either are born here or just have a Visa. But in PH full blooded Pinoys have similar or close to similar descendents. Pinoys are in the census here and are listed as Asian/asian islander.
We are a race though? Just that our blood has gotten mixed with others a lot. Native filipinos are more prominent in tribes like Aetas and Igorot tribes~
If you think about it. If a foreigner lives in Japan, they would not be called 'Japanese' because Japanese meant "of Japanese descent", which is somehow similar to Filipinos. As opposed to a country like America, doesn't matter where you're from or what you look like, if you are a citizen, you'd be American.
That means that while we have diverse appearances, we still have a homogenous Filipino culture.
Philippines is made out of different ethnic groups like Bisaya, Tagalog, Ilocano, etc. but these races are still Philippine races unlike in America where it’s made out of people from different countries and race. Filipinos can be both nationality and ethnicity.

You’re wrong mate. Most people considered Filipinos as Asian. Filipinos in Canada and Australia knows that they are Asian and people there considered them as one. In Europe Filipinos are considered as “Orientals”.
In US, it’s quite unique. The reason why some Americans considered Filipinos as Pacific Islander is because Filipino-Americans themselves are claiming that they’re part of that group which is very wrong. Filipino-Americans will claim anything like (Latina that they have Spanish blood, Pacific Islander, etc.), but they will never call themselves as “Asian” because of negative stereotypes and discrimination that Asian people experienced there.

I’m Filipino and I could easily identify someone who is Filipino. I don’t really think it’s the physical features that give it away but the way we carry ourselves. I could tell by the way someone walks or dresses up. There’s just something in the way we move and there’s something in our demeanor that is very familiar and unique. There’s a level of looseness and nonchalant way about us that makes it obvious in my eyes.

I used to hear it from friends I don't know anymore from 10 years ago but I encounter it again and again and can distinguish it against Spanish and Amerindian languages.

For me I think it varies, Filipinoes don't have those distinct features similar to each other that you can directly identify them as Filipinos and they tend to have similar features which can be associated with other race unlike homogenous countries. There are stereotypes but when you meet a lot of them you begin to realize that its more diverse specially with the eyes, skin tone and hair textures, but most Filipinos do have round small faces, I don't if its only me but i notice as well, its Filipino genes to have rounder thighs despite their weight.

I’m a Filipino who now resides overseas and there are instances that I have mistaken other Filipinos for being from other Asian Country. When I was in the Philippines I have fairer complexion than what it is now but I still considered myself “kayumanggi” back then however, during my college years there were two separate instances but both events happened while I was in the bus. I was asked by both Filipino guys if I’m “Chinese”. My features are way too far at least from majority of Chinese features we know but for some reason I was mistaken for being a Chinese and these happened while in the Philippines.haha

That's very possible. Even before the Spanish came to Philippines, many Chinese traders already married Filipinos. Many Filipinos (although not the majority) have Chinese ancestry. The rest of the foreign ancestry like Spanish were pretty low.

You should watch some YT Channel that documented the migration of Filipinos since the early days of the Spanish colonialization. It was not only the Manila- Acapulco Galleon trade that brought an exchange of Filipinos -Mexicans vis-a-vis to PH and Mexico but the Spanish Galleon brought Filipinos to occupy lands as colonies in what is now known as Los Angeles and Texas in the U.S.A. Amand this has been historically documented.
Likewise, Filipino communities have been brought to other Latin American countries by the Spanish Galleons.

When I was living in Thailand, some Europeans I got acquainted with would tell me I have more similarities with native Mexican than Asian. Then my American friend when he first visited Philippines, he said that we look more like Latinos having almond shaped eyes.
We are mixed,.different asian groups blended together, each individual is an uneven mix that confuses the foreigners but in our eyes we don't even see it unless we talk about it.
My maternal grandmother was a Filipina-Spanish Mestiza, maternal grandfather is of Indian-Ati descent, paternal grandmother is very mixed (Spanish-Ati-Malay-Arab), paternal grandfather is ¼ Mexican and also of Chinese descent.

Most of my cousins, siblings, and I (on my father's side) definitely inherited the naturally light skin tones + high nose bridges but only a few of us have the pronounced Spanish mestizo/as look.

Filipinos are definitely diverse. Its kind of funny how we can look SEA or East Asians. As I live in Scandinavia and grew up here, people tend to either guess I am half-Filipino, or Half-Thai. Though tourists such as Japanese would mistake me for Japanese at times.

The Harvard study cited doesn't really tell you much about the diversity in looks, it's a measure of formal genetic diversity. According to the same study most of Africa, as well as Indonesia, are more ethnically diverse than Brazil. That may very well be true genetically, but does anybody really think Brazilians are have a narrower range of looks than Africa or Indonesia? The study is also skewed towards countries with high immigration.
Genes are what bring the looks so of course, genetic diversity is a pretty good measure for diversity of looks.
Africa is definitely diverse yes. If you look at the north of it, you'll find a lot of white people. Black people who are in the majority of Africa are also pretty diverse themselves. As an example, the oldest tribe members in Africa are very different from the stereotypical dark skinned person. They actually have much lighter skin tone and also have East Asian looking eyes.
I'm not sure about Indonesia but looking at their culture, it's pretty diverse. I was surprised by this because most Indonesians I've seen look most Filipinos. But yeah, their culture is pretty diverse (much diverse than in the Philippines) so that's a sign that there were a lot of genetic mixing between them.

I am Filipino and I love to gain more friends in different races. And when i sing my foreign friend saying you are truly Filipino because i sing well and my job is singing. But i tell them there are alot of people in my country cannot sing. but most filipino can sing because Filipinos when sad we sing and if we are happy we sing too... i have brown skin they always ask me if i am a mexican because of my last name Diaz. I agree that Filipinos looks diverse of face features maybe because historically, we became the melting pot country in Asia like Singapore. We can be look like Indonesian, Malaysian, Thai, Vietnamese, Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Mexican, even some of us looks like Indians (from India, although not too many Filipinos look Indians). Heck, I went to a Chinese restaurant here in the US and waiter started to speaking to me in Mandarin. I went to a Vietnamese store, they started to talk to me in Vietnamese. And I don't even have any of those descents. Even some of my Filipino friends, they look like Mexicans and South Americans. Unlike if you go to the countries I mentioned, their face features are consistent throughout the entire population (especially Chinese, Koreans, Japanese and Indians/Pakistanis). Take one Filipino and line up with Indonesian, Malaysian, Thai and Vietnamese, I bet you you're going to have a hard time identifying which country they're from.

Good conclusion. We have the Malay blood with brown complexion short in stature, rounded eyes, button nose, full lipped. Our diversity mixed with the white, mostly Spanish and porcelain ancestry descended from China. As we intermarried internationally our race is now so diverse in feature. Also at first, I thought that all Thai people have white skin. Because believe me or not, every Thai actors/actresses, news forcast, interviews and international papers, every single one of them has white skin. But then I saw a guy interviewing regular people from the streets I was quite surprised since their features aren't so far off from Filipino or South East Asian features.
Ok but most Filipinos in media are also light skinned, even more to the european looks.
@@Ama94947 That’s actually true since many of our celebrities are actually half westerners. Filipino media are really obsessed with Eurocentric beauty that they will give you a leading role for just being half westerners. I’m glad that it’s changing a little bit this days.
@@Ama94947 actresses and actors that you usually see are mostly half but the whole industry has 40% half and 60% pure Filipinos. Even other Pure Filipinos have white skin, some are Chinese Descent, Spanish Descent, American Descent and even Japanese Descent that really made us a diverse country. A supporting fact for that is just within my Aunties and Uncles, some have white skin ever since they were born in the 70s-80s even though whitening soaps, lotions and other whitening stuffs weren't still created or not even in demand at that time.

some Filipinos has Chinese blood or ancestry but did you knok that more or most poeple in northern Thailand are Chinese mestizos even millions of them bec of Chinese minorities who immigrated from China by land boarder or even northern was actually connected in Thailand
long time ago, and like the Philippines the rich Chinese has been controlled their economy...in this is a very big problem in Thailand according to my thai friend as you can see most of their celebrities look like Chinese and that's their trademarks.
Actually, all of the persons who talked in this video have a "look-alike" in the Philippines. We are just so diverse looking and very adoptive to any culture.
Not surprising, we have ~2000 inhabited islands. There were completely separate tribes in history. Some aboriginal filipinos look nearly black with curls. Some latino from the colonial times. Some more asian probably due to migration from Taiwan. Most of my family is light skinned with freckles even, while my cousins are deep tan. Very cool seeing the complex range.
Filipinos are like chocolate, we got white, milk, and dark and cacao. But they’re still chocolate.

Actually I like tha fact that during family reunions we seem to be celebrating the united nations. There are family members that look like east asians, south asians, south east asians, europeans, blacks, white, latinos. It makes for a very interesting family picture. It also shows how we are openly accepting of our differences even if they are only skin deep.

Agree with Eriel and Sari, specially with Eriel. Having the chance to visit on some SEA countries, I kinda get what she meant by the Eurocentric features. We have this feature on majority of the population that’s quite unique from other SEA even to people from Indonesia whom I think we’re more closely related to.
