  • In this screencast tutorial I continue my look at HOOBS and walk through how to add devices to HOOBS and show how to set up and access those devices in HomeKit. I am using Harmony hubs in this case and walk through how to install the plugin, change the configuration file to match your set up and show where you can see the devices you have set up on your HOOBS system.
    I also walk through the steps to get your HOOBS hub onto the Home App on your Apple devices and how to add any devices you have connected through HOOBS. I then show you how this particular device, the Harmony Hub works with HomeKit.
    HOOBS really is a great devices for making Homebridge simple. To have an option to connect all your devices that are not HomKit compatible to HomeKit gives greater access to devices for your home automation needs.
    As always thanks for watching! Please subscribe and then like, favorite and share this post with others if you could. It really helps support this channel so I can do more content. Have a great week!

    Hi. Question about the function in homekit. Can you set scenes with the harmony hub activities? Say, “Siri Watch Cable TV” and it just works as if you pressed the Watch TV button on the Harmony Remote?

      Thanks for the comment. Are you getting any error messages in the logs? That would tell you the issue.

      @Budget Home Automation
      To add to this, I like to get into my Router Settings and give most of my main devices their own IP address that never changes. If you lose power, or things get turned on/off, things reboot up in different order, and now your IP address for everything changes. So if you set something to 192.168.1.13 and after a reboot or things changing, DHCP is going to assign things some other new IP address, Now it could be 192.168.1.45. If you entered the first IP number into your settings and now that IP changes, things will no longer work.
      So for example, I can go into my ASUS settings under LAN, and then click on DHCP Server, scroll down, and then I can manually assign IP numbers to any device I want using its MAC address number. So say I want my HOOPS hardware to always be 192.168.1.20. I can pick the right MAC address, Enter the IP address I want it to always use, click Add, and on the bottom apply. Now HOOBS will ALWAYS get the IP number of 192.168.1.20 no matter what. You want to do this with Harmony Hubs and anything else. Even Wireless devices, like say an iPhone could do if you want. iPhone is not a big deal, but My 2 NAS's have their own IP numbers, and on and on for my devices so that they never change on me. I use the 10 Network, so if I enter 10.0.0.100 in my web browser, I know it will always go right to my NAS Main Menu. If you're entering an IP number in the config for HOOBS Plugin, and don't link that device to an IP number, you are asking for issues down the road as it WILL FAIL.
      Every Router has the capability to lock an IP number to the device's MAC address. Every device whether it's a Wired Ethernet Port or Wireless has its own MAC address. Every one is completely different. Even my 2 NAS units with 2 ethernet ports on them, the MAC address for each is different. Close but different. My HOOBS I set an address of 10.0.0.155. No matter what, that is always what its IP number will be.
      My ASUS Router will allow me to enter a MAX of 64 devices in having a Static IP number. Which is what I'm doing. It's not Static, always the same. No longer allowing DHCP to assign it anything IT wants to. (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) I find in general over the years that manually assigning almost all of my devices a Static IP number, and not relying on DHCP for everything, makes for a more overall stable Network.

      Yes there is a smart things plugin for home bridge. I haven't used it though so can't tell you how it works. Hope that helps!

    I’m interested in hoobs and found this a great overview. I’m not a programmer or terminal user. Are the plugins simple enough where I would just install them and that’s it? I don’t want to go into terminal and config things. Or is this more complicated and it’s over my head? For example, I have a house where in inherited Hue lights. I want to use it on HomeKit. Will it work easy enough?

      hue lights can be integrated with homekit directly without the need to HOOBS, you might need to purchase the hue hub if it is missing. To answer your question, i am not a programmer either and i have got several hubs (that do not support homekit) to be integrated with homekit using HOOBS. It is generally easy, most of the popular plugins just require you to input your existing account's username and password of the product you want to add and it will work. you have to have an existing hub though.
