  • This group of brothers starts a new project in a rural part of Lawrence Stavern St.Andrew. They were inspired by my videos. Their brother in Canada sponsored this project and investing heavily in sustainable goat housing. A lot of learning taking place as they go along this journey this has good startup potential. I can feel the passion and the strong family bond. A lot of interesting information here so sticks around.

These videos' are inspiration for small farmers every where.
One of these days you should visit the community of Woodford in St. Andrew. There a lot of cow and goat farmers in the area that will benefit from your advice.

Mr Bernard I don't think the cedar wood is a good idea to used to build the goat pen. Cedar have a high smell and it's not good for building a rabbit hut either

Correct. Totally agree. Never use cedar wood in the construction of goat or rabbit pens.
You are doing a fabulous job teaching / educating your fellow Jamaicans about goat farming. Different breeds etc.
I would love to visit your country once again to discover more rural areas & see your goat farm & others.
Keep up the good work teaching the younger generations about livestock.
Are there any programs in your country through the Department of Agriculture to help folks get a goat farming business up & running? Example: fencing, housing, basic infrastructure, etc?
Here in the US we have programs to help farmers.
In some cases one can even get help purchasing startup animals & livestock.
There is a great demand for goat meat these days. More & more homesteaders are raising the Boer breed for the ever growing demand in the meat market. Some families are raising them for the show circuit.
I wish you much luck & success. ❤❤❤❤❤

  • @HappyShackHomestead

Sir… you mentioned all the fruits & natural vegetation that grows in your area can be fed to the goats. Which is great. However…. Please you must remind / inform folks to never give a goat or any livestock fruit that has mold on it. It Carries mycotoxins and can kill a goat within 24 hours if eaten.
In pigs, it has been known to cause miscarriages & mummified piglets.
Another subject I’d like to share…. here in the US we use electric wire fences for goats … pigs too.
3 strands of wire is sufficient.
Goats are now being used to clear areas to aide in fire prevention by eating all the brush & overgrowth. We have wildfires here in the US. Several videos are on RUclips covering this subject with the use of goats.
One lady hires out her huge herd of goats to clear the land for various reasons.
Consider the use of Electric fencing to contain the goats. You’d first have to clear the way for the intended fence line. You’ll also need a ground rod.
This may be an area worth exploring. They sell solar fence chargers so there’s no need to hook the fence directly to a power source.
I’ve been to Jamaica & seen firsthand what the terrain is like there. You have so much vegetation the goats could easily clear the land. Save much money on the cost of supplemental grain & such.
Electric fencing is something you may want to consider. Start with a small area then expand.
    By the way….
There is a wealth of info on the internet about moldy fruit & the damage it can cause when given to healthy animals.
Also how to install electric fencing.
Do you have farm stores in your area?
I’d like to speak to you more about your goat business. How can we make this possible?
