  • Narrated by Isabella Rossellini and produced by the National Gallery of Art, this film traces the career of Giuseppe Arcimboldo, an artist whose work thrilled and delighted the Habsburg courts of the later 16th century. Arcimboldo was best known for his "composite heads"-faces composed of fruits, vegetables, fish, flowers, and beasts of all kinds. The film explores the connection between his paintings and the burgeoning natural sciences, the voyages of discovery, and the atmosphere of intellectual curiosity at the courts of Europe. The 30-minute version of the film is on view and for sale at the National Gallery of Art. The film is made possible by the HRH Foundation. Produced in conjunction with the exhibition Arcimboldo, 1526-1593: Nature and Fantasy.

A human head, natural forms, fruits, a sense of ageing, humor and the fantastical. It is one of the joys of painting that I can perceive multiple things at the same times.

i was recently in Vienna and saw the paintings in the kunst museum! Are they really the original ones? Or are there some fakes? Is it easy to fake paintings like this?

A genius---but how did he 'get away with it'? He was dealing with tyrants like the Hapsburg dynasty! They must have been ego-maniacs to be 'taken in' by his flattery in attribution of the Four Seasons to themselves as omnipotent rulers! Fair play to the man--his intricate 'flights of fantasy' in depicting all kinds of fruits and plants belong to the Renaissance mind!!!

What was the map without Poland? :( Until 1972 Poland was hudge! The filmmakers made a fatal factual and historical mistake.
