One thing that you didn't mention (and to be fair it's something you wouldn't normally need to mention) that was the deal sealer for me was the overheating. I am planning to do holiday videos with my camera and Mediterranean summers can be harsh. From testing that people have done, the DJI seems to be able to take 25 Celsius temps without overheating at all, whereas the Hero 11 overheats in about an hour/75 minutes which is less than the life of a battery. I'm not saying that the DJI won't overheat in the harsh temperatures of Cyprus, it most likely will, but it will at least hold out the longest and that sealed the deal overall for me personally. Just something that other people might like to know.

I really hope that there will be some improvements on the SoC side, because it feels like this is the only part limiting other brands to produce good GoPro alternatives. I took the DJI to Australia in November and was very happy with the results. Didn't need a gimble and the mount was super convenient when needing to pocket the camera in public. Never really noticed the focus issues until I tried taking close up photos. It also makes an excellent webcam.
I have and really like the Action 3 - especially after returning my original that was build in September 2022, which clearly had the soft focus issue. I shoot mostly outdoors, and find the image quality sufficient. I love the DJI Mic integration. I do wish apple would make an action cam, or at least allow external media recording with the iPhone. Can't beat GoPro for the image quality, and accessories, but possibly more important is user friendliness. Which is where DJI wins. Longer battery, easier mic/sound solution, and a growing amount of accessories. It says something GoPro is constantly offering flash sales, 15% and 10% off various models. DJI just needs to sort out its colour science and fix the poor focus issue that many users cameras have been plagued with.

For me a good compromise will be to have the video quality, stabilisation and mic from GoPro Hero 11, user friendly, magnetic accessories and battery life from Osmo Action 3 and maybe the editing software from Insta 360 🙂, but anyway I will chose GoPro 🙂!
The magnetic mount and the front touch screen of the DJI Action 3 is dealbreaker 4 me! I love it! 🤘 PS: you can use any USB-C microphone without an adapter!

I vote for GoPro all the way because of the tons of aftermarket accesories that you can buy. Also from the image comparison point of view looks to be the best.
Having owned several DJI products and all of them working perfectly (Pocket , Pocket 2, Air 2S Drone), I decided to try out a 360 camera and purchased the Insta360-3. It corrupted the SD cards (5 of them), so I returned it and purchased another one. It also corrupted the SD cards. Returned it also. Purchased the DJI Action 3 and love it. No focusing issues, better battery life than the GoPro line up, and easier to use. I download the footage directly into iMovie from the camera, so there are no security issues.
@@TechMishka - True. I had many conversations with them and they could not figure it out. This is why I returned both cameras. I am sure that it is a bug of some sort, most likely in the downloaded computer software for the camera.
DJI Action 3 MIMO App provides live monitoring of video recording and photo shots. I don't believe the GoPro currently does this. You did not mention that important difference.
I have the dji and love it. Mine has a build date of 11/22 and I bought it towards the end of 02/23 from amazon. Got the adventure combo and well worth the price. I have really tested it out and I don't notice a focus issue and I have been able to record 4k 120 for about 35 minutes before it overheated and stopped recording (the camera didn't power off though). I tried 4k 30 and it recorded for 85 minutes before the battery died. In both cases I had the camera mounted as a dash camera in my truck. Now to be fair the 85 minute record time was done at night, but in the daytime i've gotten about 45 minutes record time in direct sunlight before it stopped recording. Overall the dji is an awesome camera as long as you don't get one with a focus issue. I've owned 4 different gopros over the years with my last one being the 10 and I had issues with all of them.
I tried to buy Gopro with big discount on official site more times but I didn't get anything. I kept getting an error (several days in a row) try again later. Support also did not help me and answered with standard answers, there are a lot of discussions about this on various forums. Now I have definitely made a choice in favor of DJI because I will not tolerate such a disregard for my future customers from Gopro
Hi I have a very old Gopro 4, and Iwant to upgrade for Easter. I have a budget of max 350euros. In that budget, Ifound the Gopro 9, the DJIAction 3 and the Insta360One RS. I am not interested in 360video, but Ineed a action camera for hiking, skiing, mountain bike and scuba diving. Ihave watched lot of tests, but I am lost because all cameras have their pros and cons. Any advice could be welcomed.
I have never owned an Action Camera in the past, so I'm coming into this without any preconceptions. I'm not too worried about features since all of these cameras seem to offer a similar, if not identical, feature set. My main concerns are: 1) reliability; 2) data security (privacy); 3) image quality. Your video definitely covered the image quality concern, and from what I saw that puts GoPro first and Insta360 second. I am not sure where these three units place in terms of reliability, but I suspect that the DJI would win here due to simplicity of design. GoPro should also be reliable based on the simple design, but that's not what I'm hearing from other reviews. This leaves data security. I want to be able to share video on my terms. I don't want to have to create a user account in order to activate a device for instance. I also want to be sure that the manufacturer is not using a device that I have purchased as a way to collect data about me, or about the places I visit. Can you comment on this? It is very concerning, as are the reports that the freezing issue seems to recur with model after model. That said, I really dislike technology vendors/manufacturers who force you into creating accounts before you can use their products. I understand that this is an issue with DJI. It naturally leads me to question their motives. I don't want to be unwittingly collecting data for DJI. Finally, I have no idea how Insta360 compares in either respect, but so far it seems like the last man standing here.

I think in terms of reliability the DJI wins. Usability too, but its biggest win comes from the fact that D-Cinelike on the Action Camera 3 with 10-Bit should intercut very nicely with D-Cinelike 10-Bit from the Mini 3 Pro drone.
I've soured on the GoPro brand as only one of the four I've bought still works. I now live in a cold climate and DJI Action 3 is the absolute king in cold because of their better battery. Plus, I have a DJI drone so matching color science is a plus. Would love the 360 cam option but I'm a bit concerned about the sometimes exposed connectors of the modular camera approach. I might add a 360 cam in the future as I love the post options and the creativity of it.
@Ronald - agreed! @Spike Web - most action cameras are meant to be used in daytime. It will take time until we get really good low light performance with actioncams.
I chose insta360. I can take high "normal action camera" quality images and switch to a 360 if I want to be more creative or get more shots from different prospectives with just 1 take!

I wanted to buy Osmo action 3 so badly. I have the GP8 and it failed me miserably by waisting 1 week worth of shots down the drain. Osmo 3's well known focus issues, that are not firware related, is what's stopping me. Why so few RUclipsrs talk about it???
There always will be people who want fame and want to make clickbait videos. Each and every new product may have flaws. Most of these dramatic videos are too overreacting imo.
Dji the best for the bucks it offers good quality they started the new 2 screen cameras, followed by modular insta360 but if you are brand conscious pay the high price gopro which the other 2 brands can do same purpose and job.
DJI action 3 wins hand down even though they lose in video quality. i just need something basic and the price of an DJI OA3 adventure combo is = gopro hero 11. And the size is what i need as well
I tried the DJI Osmo for a couple of weeks and returned it, not happy with the close focus issue. The front touch screen was never used either, very small and was never needed for my situations. I replaced it with the GoPro 11. Honestly, the close focus on the GoPro isn't very good either, don't expect cell phone camera quality. The GoPro auto upload to cloud storage is nice but a bit glitchy, sometime the upload take forever and I have fast cable internet, whats the ??? Some videos it just skips and doesn't upload right away. If you leave Wifi on for auto upload and are not plugged into an external power source the battery runs down fast. The form is nice, I keep a 1/4x20 tripod mount on the camera and attach a Arca-swiss mounting plate that makes a nice flat stand that tilts. Remove the Arca-Swiss plate and attach it to a selfie stick or snap it onto a tripod. The quick shot feature for run and gun videos is nice.
No action camera will have a good close focus - they are intended for outdoor use. Sorry to hear about the DJI experience... And I hope you will enjoy your GoPro more and more over time.
I love OA3 because of its price and battery life. But one of the reasons that turned me off is that DJI does not offer a remote control product that has a feature to remotely wake up OA3. Unlike GP11 (The Remote) and RS with the new GPS Action Remote. I'm a travel and trail vlogger. The use of remote wake up is to attach an action cam to a 2nd person's backpack that is controlled by me so that I can shoot at a different angle
The problem with GoPro for several generations is their unreliability, and the slow, if ever, release of FW to fix it. I finally made the switch to the DJI manufactured after 9/22, and it has been a breath of fresh air with no focus problems.
All are great cameras. They have great features and in some cases better than others, as shown. But what works for ones use is the most important at the end of the day. If i were to buy any of these action cameras and for my needs and use, I would choose the GoPro. A great comparison and review, Michael. 👍

I wouldn't call it "focusing" problem. Action cameras do not focus - they have infinite focus. And I don't think this is exactly the case with osmo Action 3...
Kind of strange I keep on hearing about such... I use high nitrate modes, often record slow mo and didn't have any troubles. The camera gets warm, but doesn't overheat.
As long as GoPro keeps freezing and crashing, it is a no-go for personal use. Sadly, we have to use GoPro in professional scenarios due to hard-headed executives making decisions, and GoPro is a nightmare.
I got the Insta360 One RS and I HATE it! Worst image quality! I shoot at 1080 60 and the videos are grainy. One a sunny day outside. And Insta360 policies SUCK! After 14 days I complained about the image quality and they did nothing except treat me like I was an idiot. Didn’t even offer to replace a possible defective camera when I asked. Never will I buy anything from them.

GoPro crashes a lot in real life. The app is ok but not very intuitive and the updates are few and far between. Insta360 (which I have used only the last 3 months) offers better images (1 inch sensor version ) t he smaller screen gets some getting used to, but the stability and performance is way above the GoPro. The app is the best by far and makes it very easy to share and play with your videos. Updates are constantly available and the shotlab feature is lots of fun. The desktop app works great but no shotlab feature.
hey Pete, thanks for the comment. Really weird - I've seen many people claiming that gopro crashes, and my last GoPro crash was with Hero 9, like a long time ago... Insta360 really have a brilliant app and happy to see someone else confirming this.

Most action cameras are incapable of shooting in near distance, so could be that your unit is not affected at all.

Any of these 3 cameras will be significantly better than your current one. Think about your priorities and you will figure it out.

Look up GoPro freezing. It will help you decide about the reliability.

I've had three Go-pros, the most unreliable glitchy and over priced cameras out there. I now have an Insta One RS and I love it.

The 1-inch sensor is quite specific, has narrow field of view and not so action camera like.

The problem with GoPro for several generations is their unreliability, and the slow, if ever, release of FW to fix it.
I finally made the switch to the DJI manufactured after 9/22, and it has been a breath of fresh air with no focus problems.

All are great cameras. They have great features and in some cases better than others, as shown. But what works for ones use is the most important at the end of the day. If i were to buy any of these action cameras and for my needs and use, I would choose the GoPro. A great comparison and review, Michael. 👍

well i think the insta 360 with the one inch sensor might be better that was not tested hear gopro dose look the best out of the 3 they all sound the same to me

I wouldn't call it "focusing" problem. Action cameras do not focus - they have infinite focus. And I don't think this is exactly the case with osmo Action 3...

The overheating issues that plague the GoPro is a dealbreaker for me personally
Kind of strange I keep on hearing about such... I use high nitrate modes, often record slow mo and didn't have any troubles. The camera gets warm, but doesn't overheat.
It’s the battery life on the Action 3 for me! And it’s convenient mounting system as well.

As long as GoPro keeps freezing and crashing, it is a no-go for personal use. Sadly, we have to use GoPro in professional scenarios due to hard-headed executives making decisions, and GoPro is a nightmare.
So many people state that GoPro freezes and yet - I am still waiting for some proofs...

I got the Insta360 One RS and I HATE it! Worst image quality! I shoot at 1080 60 and the videos are grainy. One a sunny day outside. And Insta360 policies SUCK! After 14 days I complained about the image quality and they did nothing except treat me like I was an idiot. Didn’t even offer to replace a possible defective camera when I asked. Never will I buy anything from them.

I doubt you have a faulty camera; Usually - there should be a return policy, you could have tried it. But still - I'll be happy to check your footage and try to help if possible.
GoPro always has crappy mics and GoPro makes you buy a media mod. GoPro is garbage. Nice video
In my opinion - the GoPro's microphone is the best among these cameras.

GoPro crashes a lot in real life. The app is ok but not very intuitive and the updates are few and far between.
Insta360 (which I have used only the last 3 months) offers better images (1 inch sensor version ) t he smaller screen gets some getting used to, but the stability and performance is way above the GoPro. The app is the best by far and makes it very easy to share and play with your videos. Updates are constantly available and the shotlab feature is lots of fun. The desktop app works great but no shotlab feature.
hey Pete, thanks for the comment. Really weird - I've seen many people claiming that gopro crashes, and my last GoPro crash was with Hero 9, like a long time ago...
Insta360 really have a brilliant app and happy to see someone else confirming this.
