Top 25 Classic Drum Breaks (for Hip-Hop heads!)

- These are probably some of the most classic and widely used drum breaks of all time. Many of you Hip-Hop heads out there will probably recognize most of these if not all of them. I know they come quick and are cut short. I did this so that it will be easy to loop them if you decide to download them for beats or whatever. Feel free to download and pump out some jams with that old school sound like our Hip-Hop ancestors. I know I do. Enjoy!

Man, the noise and at times quite bad quality of the recordings is definitely part of the mystique. If any of these were recorded digitally and not on tape, a lot of the magic would be gone.
Thank you so much for posting. It's hard to believe that a multi billion dollar a year industry was built from the ground up from old dusty samples like these. Songs that would have been forgotten forever were it not for the DJ's and B-Boys that breathe new life into older compositions.

@@TheSecondC2 in old funk songs there would sometimes be drum solos where the drummer just plays a funky beat and everyone dances. That's a break beat and it's sampled a lot in old hip hop

hip hop has more soul that ive heard in most music, i feel it as much as i feel some of the best blues jazz and buckethead ive ever heard..hip hop is for ever.

@emunesystem ... its a classic but i just went with a collection of my personal choice..i just went with the breaks that ive seen the most in all my research and the breaks i think have the best rugged sound for hip-hop..these really are propably the most reoccuring breaks used in 90's boom bap...

Yo as a producer and a live musician I know first hand that sample based music, when done creatively, originally, and with respect and taste, is just as valid as any other form of music. However, those of us who do produce sample based music SHOULD educate ourselves in the classical sense and learn to compose and play music (if that is available to you). In the end, all that matters is that the song plays on and that people have a way to express what's in their soul.

Other than leaving out "Apache" by The Incredible Bongo Band -- possibly the most sampled, and influential beat in hip-hop next to "Funky Drummer" -- this is a pretty good compilation.
I did think that definitely needs to in there. But in away it's nice not to. If that makes sense. Same shit as ever sought of thing. Shit is the wrong word nothing shit about Apache . Ahhh I'm drunk writing this a 2 in the morning. With my Mrs asleep next to me . I got headphones on , B&Ws as well , burning a fat joint of star dawg. they all seem to have a eighth note hihat with a snare on 2 and 4 and a kick on 1 and around but not (usually) on 3. the rest is just color.

Except they're swung in non-academic ways, with specific articulation on the hi-hats. cymbals, using the fulctum, tip, or side of the stick.. Some drummers leave their bassdrum unmuffled so they can press the beater into the head to raise the pitch, and appear to have multiple bassdrums with different pitches. There's a lot that goes into properly articulating any simple beats -
the catchy grooves that get caught & cut & re-used aren't randomly enjoyed, there's a lot of detail. You could say the same about an AC/DC beat, sit down and plop down the notes in your sequencer, and it's not gonna pop the same without expressing all of the aspects of the groove (dynamics & tempo modulation). It'll sound like fruity loops just had a 4-on-the-floor bowel movement. Additionally, the articulation & groove usually has some rhythmic underbelly that comes out subconsciously from the artist, based on what is ergonomically comfortable and sensible to play. You don't get that from 8th note hihats with the snare on 2 and 4 and a kick on 1 and adding 'smoke' (atmospheric field-recordings, samples from old movies) or 'color' (chords and shit)
No the second kick is definitely NOT on the 3. What defines the basic beat of Funk, Hip Hop, DnB, is that the second kick is brought forward or back (or both) 1/8th from what would would be the 3rd beat of a bar divided into 4 notes. The breaks that are widely used for DnB also have an additional ghost hit on the 10th 16th note. As stated below, as they are live drums, none of the hits are exactly in their 'correct' place and variations in velocity etc. and extra hits (more ghost snares, bells, hats. conga...) give teach beats there individual groove but the basic fundamental placements of the main beats are as as I have stated.

@SrTonPro ... you can find music samples all over the internet, ex. youtube, whosampled, crate kings etc...these places will either tell you who used em or just show you the drums used or whatever...i do alot of researching...i downloaded all of these along with a set of 300 breaks from cratekings

There is no doubt that Funky Drummer is the sickest live/played drum riff ever. Technically speaking it is almost an anomaly. What I'm trying to say is it would fall under a 'greatest wonder of the world' drummers category. Do your research and you'll see great drummers have taken some of it's style and tech.
