    Hey y'all, in today's video I'm weighing in on whether I think thred up can be a tool for breaking up with fast fashion.
    I talk about the pros and cons of thred up and who it might be for (or not).

    I have sent things TO Thred Up and they really rip off the sellers. At the time I had to pay for my clean out bag and then they only took about 1/4 of my items. The items that they accepted were some of the not so nice things that my elderly MOther stuck in there. All of my newer, with tags, brand name things were rejected. I received maybe 25 cents a piece for my items. I think that one thing, Madewell jeans, I got around $1.75 for. All in all I made about $7.50, which didn't even cover the price of my clean out kit. I already read that the items that they did not accept that have the rights to do whatever they see fit with if you do not pay even more for the return service if you reject their offer. Anything that they reject they can also sell on their own. Honestly I stopped using them for a lot of these reasons. I donate everything that I have now to a local non-profit thrift store that supports a local school and also to an organization that gives clothing and items to families who take in/have foster kids.

      @@HiphipMeray If you are looking to make a little money Thred Up is NOT the way to go. If you just want to get your items out of your house and don't care if you make anything then they can be an ok option.

      @@faeriesmak It was mainly to make a little money and not have to do all the leg work. Most of the stuff I have to sell is NWT or Shoes that are still in the box and never worn. I can’t even imagine getting all of that shipped to them for a “no” or .25 cents! That’s so wild to me.

    This is such a realistic review!! I ordered from ThredUp a few months ago thinking I would use it all the time, but the good/great item quality disappointed me and I haven't ordered since. For buying used tops and sweaters it's also a good idea to consider the fabric blend. The more a fabric is blended with plastic additives like polyester/nylon/acrylic and other synthetics the more likely it is to develop pilling in the dryer as the plastic melts & warps under high temperatures. Garments made of plastic blended with natural fibers also tend to lose their shape faster and hold on to more odors & stains over time. The most lasting clothes will be 100% one fabric type (whether plastic or natural) or have least 90% one consistent fabric type! 👚🧺

      @shawnaripari  3 месяца назад +4

      thank you! Their great & good items aren't actually great quality and it's very surprising they catalogue an item as 'good' if it has multiple holes. You're also spot on about checking fabrics! I didn't talk a lot about that in the video so glad you spoke more about it

      @@josiemaromi6981 Awesome! I’ve wondered why some this pill and some don’t and the prices of them could vary greatly. For example I’d get a free tee shirt for a 5K and it would wear like a dream. Buy an overpriced one at an event and it was good for just a few washes. I love linens and/or cottons… especially for summertime in the south and now I know not to be fooled by those that may have other materials added whereas previous I’d have thought, it’s mostly cotton, it will be fine. Ha.
      I’m inundated by adds for 100% wool and they do look intriguing but as a retiree, they definitely aren’t necessary and I’m five months into a no buy year so I really don’t have to think about it for now. 🤑🤑🤑
      Thanks again!

    A ThredUp tip: if you use the 'new with tags' filter, you can sometimes find things for LESS than if they didn't have tags because they know the price needs to be less than the price on the actual tag. Something to play with since the prices can be a little inflated sometimes, especially for brands like Zara, H&M, etc which are already sold for a low price point. I love ThredUp for a second hand option for quality items in specific brands.

    This is just a warning for folks who want to sell their clothing on Thredup. I recently decluttered and sent 5 bags of clothing to Thredup. All my clothing was in great condition with tags. I actually sold most of it and made a whopping $10. I will never sell on Thredup again.

    I use poshmark mostly. If you filter for size and type and "closet" (actually secondhand) over boutiques (which sellers are shipped new overstocks of from warehouses) there's lots of selection for typical basics. Some trendy stuff too. All genders!

    UK charity shops work well. We have quite a few in my town. But also Ebay or Depop:quite a few people sell their clothes. And I found a website who sold old discontinued sports sweaters and such in the UK. I found an awesome Christmas sweater for the South Carolina Gamecocks 😊

    I live near a store called Plato’s Closet. It is a physical store like that online Thred Up place. You can take your clothes there and they will go through the clothes, pick what they want and pay you cash for whatever they take. The good part is that you just take back whatever they don’t want or whatever you think they aren’t paying you enough for. They also sell the clothes right there so you can try stuff on and prices are reasonable for preowned.

    I buy on ebay. I prolly get 7 good items vs 3 meh ones. Part of that is a learning curve too . Not paying enough attention to fabric or fit.

  • @dinygoesglam
    @dinygoesglam 3 месяца назад +5

    ~min 17, I dont think it is your fault. First you are buying out of an online picture that may have light interference, purposively positioned to look better, etc… secondly, I would also think very good means very good. That t-shirt is “good” at best.
    ps.: I only buy clothes I can see the material composition. I’ve stopped buy plastic-y clothes long ago and if I dont know the composition, I am not buying.

    • @shawnaripari
      @shawnaripari  3 месяца назад

      Yeah, some of it is just the unknowns of buying online but their rating system sucks. The items match how they rate their items but they shouldn't be classifying items with stains and multiple holes as good 😭

    One thing about thredUP that really annoys me is that sometimes I don’t know where their measurements come from. I am plus size, so I am METICULOUS about measurements. And they will have something listed as 2-3x but a 34” waist. That is just not possible. Then I will go to the brand’s own size chart and find that their pant waists are usually 48”. If a garment has been worn let’s say for 3-4 months and pretty often by a person, it will be bigger/be stretched out even from laundry. It’s a good tool but not a great one.

    • @themagicknightress7132
      @themagicknightress7132 Месяц назад

      And the fact that they don’t list the hip measurement is crazy. Like maybe they’re bad at estimating the waist measurement (since I think it should be extrapolated based on the in seam?), but the hip measurement is easy to get

    I buy most of my pre-owned clothes and accessories on ebay. I wear a very hard to find size in general. So, thrift shops and apps/sites like thred up, poshmark, etc... hardly ever have things that will work for me. But ebay is a consistent reliable source.

    As someone with a lot of experience with threadup I have a love hate relationship with the cart timers. I remember people putting items in their cart every 12 hours, presumably so others couldn't buy them, and while it wasn't a rampant problem I think I had it happen twice that I would have bought something but it was always in someone's cart but not actually bought for days. I also think that holding your cart for a period of time makes sense because they are only selling that one item. I could see people complaining if they put something in their cart only for someone else to buy it before they got to check out. Generally speaking a "normal" retail site won't have that problem.

    The other day I saw on IG or facebook, cant recall, a guy buying jerseys/t-shirts online and he created his own body-like stencil for tshirts, bottoms, and so forth to see if he can match his current with new clothes, or “see” how it “fits” (this last part is just seeing as much as an online try-out can help).

    • @faeriesmak

      I see them as fast fashion due to the fact that most of the clothing stock there now is made especially by the brand FOR TJ Maxx, etc. These stores did not start out like this but it is how they are these days.

    I keep complaining to ThredUp that they don’t have hip measurements on their bottoms. I’m 27” waist but that doesn’t help me because the pants typically don’t go up to my waist and a lot of them are sized for skinny people and my fat ass is 39”

    I feel in a way privilidged to live in an area full of second hand shops and tbh this is the way I was brought up - majority of my clothing is second hand, same as my mother's that taught me to shop this way. For online shopping besides local groups etc there is Vinted that works in several countries of Europe - shipping also goes between countries. It's a marketplace where individual people post their clothing (and some other stuff) and sell it directly.

    ThredUP is saving me so much money. I decluttered 80% of my wardrobe last year. It was necessary since I moved to a new city and changed 1 dress size. I then spent several weeks not shopping and learning about what I really wanted to wear (styles/colors/fabrics). My goal was to NEVER have to declutter like that again! Then I found ThredUP and it made things so easy and affordable👍
