  • In this video we are taking a closer look at the newly introduce One Design Class in Wing Foil Racing, the X-15. The team of Starboard and FreeWing worked on a concept with the goal to make Foil Racing more fair. Just like in other sailing sports: If you like to take the sport Olympic you have to have equipment that is the same for all competitors.

    In Sailing:
    1. in an unlimited development class, the team that spends the most money usually wins.
    2. in a one-design class, the lightest sailor, or the sailor, with the best size body for the equipment and conditions, wins.
One design works really well for larger sailboats, because the size of the crew doesn’t matter as much. But when the weight of the crew is large compared to the weight of the equipment, one design just means that only sailors with ideal body weights can win. I’ve heard USA sailing will only accept men between 140-160lb, and height between 6’0”-6’4” for racing in the Laser class, because nobody else can medal in the Olympics.
It would be ridiculous if all the Olympic skiers had to race on the same skis, because really short or tall people wouldn’t fit them.
In the same way, a one-design foil class is ridiculous. Only riders that fit the equipment will win. The lightest rider will win on light wind days, and maybe a medium sized rider will win on the windiest days. Large riders would never win.
Building sailboats 20% bigger or smaller, to suit different size riders, a different conditions, would be cost prohibitive. But we already know that is not the case for winging.
The only reason for one design in winging, would be to ensure competitiveness, but anyone design class would have to have five different wing sizes, and at least three front foil sizes, to be able to accommodate different size riders, and have them all be competitive. But that solution is actually more expensive Than just letting everyone ride whatever they want, and all of them buying new gear every year to use the latest, competitive designs.

Wow thanks for the the insight that was very interesting. They do that in windsurfing too. I wonder how things work out with the weight class there. I think I have to make sure to watch theses sports this summer when the Olympics are on.

The Nacra 17 class is the only Olympic sailing I’ve ever been able to stand watching.
49er could be ok with a ton of wind…
In the Olympics, they actually have two separate single-handed men’s dinghy classes. The idea of being that one of them is competitive for larger men.
Imagine needing two different sets of Olympic skiing, medals, because humans didn’t fit the same size skis…
Or imagine a surfing competition in which a 5’4” surfer and a 6’4” surfer are required to ride the same board…

@@DrKnowNothing1 makes sense its a tough sell... I think many things are not written in stone yet. They do group the riders in ages and give gear accordingly. That is a beginning. BTW thanks for subscribing to the channel I really appreciate it.

They dont want a "fair racing" experience. They want market monopoly and its gross... you cant say you came up with a "usual racing class". Its literally just your set of gear, there is nothing special about it. Its like saying f one made the formula class which is just strikes and eagles...
Never use 1 brand. If you want your best odds of winning, you use the best brand

@@StandUpMagazin i am honestly mostly not a fan of how starboard has a monopoly on the iQ foil class. I think its predatory behaviour since they just charge whatever they want. I could be okey with a standardised setup, if all foil brands have them and everyone can innovate for the next year. I dont have a lot of faith that will happen though.

please don't do it. one design is just an attempt for a manufacturer to control a segment of the market. In the end it stifles innovation and makes the mass image of the sport less exciting. Imagine car racing with only Toyota Camarys. Just look back at Olympic windsurfing and what one design did to a fast growing exciting sport turning it into a canoe pumping challenge.

Thanks for watching. I think we are having a very interesting discussion here about the pros and the cons. I personally dont think other brands will stop innovation because of that and the GWA will for sure not adopt this class either. I think this will be separate for Clubs and atheltes aspire for the Olympics, should it ever become Olympic.

Youre totally right about that, but it's good if it's just for racing Tho. Kinda needed for fairness. Just like sail gp and other sail classes. Doesn't change innovation for 'other than racing' disciplines.
