Independence Day 2023: Beating retreat ceremony underway at Attari-Wagah border in Amritsar

- The beating retreat ceremony was held at the Attari-Wagah border in Punjab’s Amritsar on the occasion of Independence Day. A huge crowd gathered at the Attari-Wagah border to attend the ceremony. The atmosphere was filled with celebrations as people sang songs of patriotism, danced and hoisted the national flag of India. ‘BOLDs’ women also performed an electrifying drill with the illustrious 303 rifles, which weigh approximately 4.7 kg each. The BSF soldiers marched forward with vigour and ferocity, proudly holding the national flag in their hands. The Beating Retreat is an iconic ritual of lowering the national flags of both countries at the border just before sunset.

Who said that Indians have got freedom? If we want to say that the people of India got freedom, in any midnight a woman should be able to walk freely alone without fear through the streets of our country. If such a situation arises then only, we can say that our country has achieved Independence.

Time this public display of one up manship and unnecessary showmanship are stopped. Even if beating the retreat ceremony has to be observed it can still be done in a military manner with less drama and comic. Both the countries- which were afterall one till 1947 ,must use 14/15 Aug, by remaining on own side of the border, to simultaneously pay respects to the fallen soldiers, Sailers and Airmen who fought for British India till partition and later for their own countries and united in death. Bravery and sacrifice neither knows nationality nor religion.
Independence....Independence.....Independence...? Is it the Independence that we enjoy now? No, never. What we are experiencing now is not the true form of freedom. In the early hours of August 15, 1947, every Indian recorded a ritualistic event in his personal diary. From 15th August 1947, every Indian kept the hope of light in their life. But after the sad demise of the great Jawaharlal Nehru, Indian rulers starting with Indira Gandhi gradually began to rule the country in autocracy. They focused only into the prosperity of the capitalists living in the nation. But they never have cared to provide food and shelter to the poor living in the country. Thus, the gap between the highest and lowest classes widened. But it continues to this day. Also, uncertainty, insecurity and lack of prosperity among the citizens reached into a high level. But none of the rulers cared to maintain security and prosperity among the citizens. The independence ceremony of 1947 was really just a handover of the keys of the treasures from a hard core capitalist to a soft core capitalist.
