I commented before that I was curious how a Runner would compare to SR. Well now Im starting to get an idea since I found one after a long search. 2000 50 DD. Same colour schme as this. One owner since new, adult ridden only and done less than 5000km. Always garaged and only one paint chip is in the battery hatch. First thing that I noticed is the torque and throttle response. I mean its stock, hence the vario ring removed but its way much better than my 2008 SR carb was when new. Its got to be the emissions. In the year 2000 the exhaust and the carb and airbox were not so restrictive and there were no air-flow systems out of the exhaust and so on. Its really weird since the carb is smaller on these, 12mm vs. later ones with 17,5mm. Also the cold start is incredible compared to my SR, which always struggled even when brand new. One thing that the SR takes is the step-thru functionality. Its way lower and Im used to keep the top-box on so no leg room to swing over to seat and in the Runner you can just barely fit your leg between saddle and handle bars. I dont know. Maybe I should just keep it stock. Its just too nice to fiddle with. Damn thats a problem since I allready bought a 70cc kit and a pipe so when I would find one, I would have them ready :) Well, first world problems but since I was in need of a spare daily runner, this did not solve that need... :D I got to watch these Runner vids carefully to get an idea of the differecnes on how to install pipe the easiest way and how to get to cylinder, if thats even possible without removing the engine?
I totally agree. The old runner models with 12mm carbs all stock run better than the new models with 17,5mm carbs all because the restrictions. As for a comparison to the SR I ( as a tall guy ) would prefer the runner. Far much space to sit and way better to handle. Big minus is the water pump that is always inside the engine ( piaggio ). First aprilia sr50 models came with morini engines ( water pump outside ) keep it all stock if its worth it. Only mod junky scoots for stunt riding or wheelie fun.
Oh and one thing I noticed just by watching the beginning of this video is that mine does not have that leather strap on the saddle. I dont know if they dropped it on the DD model or is it becouse here in Finland you could not take a passenger on a 50cc in the year 2000, that came later. Mine does then again have the passenger foot pegs. My scooter sadly did not came with an instruction manual, and I cant seem to find one for a model year 2000 but is it really the case that these do not have high bean lights at all? I mean theres an on/off switch but thats it. On the left side of the handle bar, there is a blank switch just like in yours. Im guessing that there it should be? Did they just used high beans in 125cc and 180cc versions or whats up with that?
yes the blank switch is for high beam. You can find it in the later models including the purejet. It will permantly have the lights on ( no switch on the right side ) and you can turn on high beam with the switch on the left side.
@@petesgarage4670 Have you done this mod? Was wondering that one could put in something that would actually work as a light source. Maybe regular bulb on the low beams and led on the high beams.
@@petesgarage4670 Yeah thats weird. And also did they do a SP version alongside with this DD? Did they have three versions (SP, DD and single disc) of a 50cc gilera in the year 2000 or is that SP the one with different graphics, diffrerent dash and was later introduces, same time as purejet? Mine is registered to one but in many countries they were for two. So Im guessing Gilera did a grab bar for the passenger? I saw one in your blue runner video. Was that the original one, that chromed piece? I mean theres a grab bar at the tail but I dont believe that could be seen as a passenger grab bar, only a lift bar to get the central stand up.
@@petesgarage4670 Yeah Ive been trying to find one for years now but here in Finland they're hard to come by, as in mint condition. In most cases the condition is: disaster. Newer style would be easier to find but I kind of like these with that huge 12l gas tank and the heritage of 180cc version. Future classics, no doubt.
@@EinarLerschen yes I agree. They also somehow have more style than the newer ones and original unmolested ones are getting very hard to find and if you find a good one you have to pay almost 1000 Eur
@@petesgarage4670 in the Netherland decent runners 50 are sold from 1500 and 125 from 2000 and 180 from 3000. The blue one still drives perfect! And is in perfect condition!
Yes the blue one is very special and very rare in this condition 👍🏻

I know that you can remove the cylinder head on the sr50 without removing the engine. Anyways its always better to get it out to have it properly done
@@petesgarage4670 So in this gilera frame you cant change the cylinder while the engine is in the frame?
