The retro dials seem to make sense. They can be just as fast as you mentioned, plus they are fun. Then, also from a business standpoint, they help to differentiate Fuji from other brands. I love my Nikon's ergonomics, but my Fuji is just as capable, and more fun.
Marketingwise Fuji did made wrong decision (again). - For me the purchase of any "new" GFX-Camera is from the table right now. My investments will go into other solutions. I think no sale is the best way to make Fuji understanding, what counts: simply what the customer like and not what marketing-"experts" thinking. 😎
Agree. I bought the XS10 during an emergency because it was within my lower budget and had the same guts as my XT-4 while it was in repair. I hated it. The menu diving beyond the lousy dial was annoying. I missed a lot of shots because of it.
Agree 100%! PSAM is a wasted dial for me, I don't think I have ever taken it out of M. Just put a "C" setting on the other dials if people want to use the front/rear dials to control SS and ISO, or use the "A" setting if people want semi automatic or fully automatic modes.
Maybe Fuji will add the retro dials to the R - whenever that’s scheduled in their roadmap. Thanks for sharing this with us, Patrick! Congrats on the latest addition to the family 🙂
Patrick, You're hitting the nail on the head! I'm actually thinking about to sell my X-H2 and get a X-T 5 instead, because I don't like the regular PASM any more. A GFX with the dedicated dials for ISO/shutter speed and exposure comp. would sell like "geschnitten Brot" - German phrase ;)
I think the 7 custom modes on x-H2s are brilliant for speed of operation for wildlife photography. For street and family I prefer retro dials - I think they are faster to operate. If I was to buy a GFX I would probably prefer retro dials. But I’m an amateur!
Why do they not make a GFX 50 R II :( i'd love to upgrade from the XT5 to a medium format... i dont need a gfx100 i just want a Medium format reasonbly compact shape.. GFX 50RII and XE-4 como is perfect
The GFX100 II has a lot of cinema camera features, so a GFX100R that caters to photographers and puts all the improved processor power into stuff like a faster readout and AF would make a lot more sense than a GFX100S II, which will probably just be a dumbed down version of the 100 II
Nobody knows it but the GFX100S II IS the 50R successor we all waited for... (just kidding, we love conspiracy theories 😎). We miss more Fuji dials too :(
Shot 1500 photos of birds of prey at the weekend using my xh2 and xt5 using manual and custom settings I had set beforehand, the xt5 was the easiest to use and the results were better - interesting eh, as you say Patrick, time for Fujifilm to wake up perhaps. How is the baby?
Hi Patrick, the important matter for me is: now gfx100ii without built in battery grip, looks like gfx100s in size but much more beautiful design and new functions. So, what will be on mark 2 of gfx100s? Do you think mark 2 will be cheaper? Less or same fps? Or what? Thank you.
I feel your pain, Patrick. Knobs and dials - so easy and intuitive to use - are going the way of the dodo bird. Sigh! Maybe go with the XT5? Smaller, lighter, less expensive, and more than enough resolution for 90% of real world picture taking.
YES! Fuji needs to take care of the majority of photograph users. GFX is for PRO users mostly. They use PSAM modes. XT users that will upgrade to GFX would be very few. If they were listening to people like you, the rest of the universe would not accept the camera due to its peculiar interface.
This is not news. It was obvious. Fuji is obsessed with only giving their dial users a second tier class of product. Maybe we can stop calling them retro considering the way the auto hierarchy works is more modern than PASM. Instead of asking for retro and vintage ask for flexible exposure control instead of modes. There's *nothing* inherently faster about pasm. Fuji just only has 1 implementation that pushes looks and fun over ergonomics and speed. Fuji could design a camera (for an x-h3) that added ergonomic fast one handed control without the objectively subpar pasm workflow. Flexible exposure a la fuji dials and and sony's fx3 in flexible exposure mode, coupled with superior buttons and software for preset switching and management, would excel at both professional and exploratory workflow. Currently fuji's dials excel at one half, cinema cameras excel at the other half, and pasm cameras excel at nothing except mediocrity
I find the report quite aggressive. Of course, it's a shame that the camera doesn't come in a retro style. I'm not an absolute professional, but I still have a GFX 100 S. And I think the concept is very good, but I would have liked some things to be different. I also like the retro style, but do you need to talk so negatively about Fujifilm? They do more right than wrong and they don't please everyone anyway. Besides, if you search the net, you'll find lots of opinions, unfortunately the negative critics always shout so loudly. You can see that again here in the reviews. But they are almost always in the minority. I just discovered the channel and thought that “FujiRumors” was more of a title for a balanced assessment. Opinions are important, of course, but please don't be so scathing. Translated with DeepL
PASM is only “faster” if you do one kind of photography only. If, as a professional, you’re switching between, say portraits and landscapes on location…PASM JUST GETS IN THE WAY OF WHAT WOULD BE A 1 or 2 dial switch.
@@jessejayphotography If you know what you’re doing you can usually change what you with one dial switch and still have all the intermediate options without having to resort to menu diving.
@@jessejayphotography To add even more the PASM dial the is cause of more and more photographers purchasing and carrying multiple cameras, each with its own dedicated use beyond just wide and narrow shooting.
This whole gen of Fuji cameras are almost certainly MVPs, which IMO is a mistake. Consumers only hope it’s a one off and they steer away from this error strategy from next gen on
Understand. Understand the passion. I am in the camp of function over esthetics. I will use the XT5 and the GFX100II in the same shot without issues. In the end is the images I get…..but I understand!!
Patrick, you're spot on and thanks for your message to Fujifilm! Having been a full time professional photographer for 35+ years, and having owned extensive Sony and other PSAM systems, I can't say one is any faster or better than the other. However, I enjoy and prefer real physical controls. They are so much simpler and intuitive. I think this is why so many Leica shooters also use Fujifilm. As Leica would say "Das Wesentlich"
"Retro" are not just good-looking, but they are direct and thus - fast. I see/change camera setup even before it is "on". I really see no reason naming them "retro" as they are just "direct" Dissapointed too. Dislike! Dislike to Fujifilm, like - to Patrick!
It is about time we have to admit that Fuji is not synonymous with Retro anymore. More PSAM dials, more plastic, less Soul. I'm afraid the disappointments will continue...
I do sort of what you're talking about. I use the aperture ring on the lens, the ISO dial on the top of my X-T3, but use the front command dial for shutter speed. Works like a charm.
ugh... Fujifilm, please listen to Patrick. I own a GFX 50s from when it was the only option. I will NOT update to a GFX until(if/when) there is a "retro" option. I will stick with my 50s for now.
The X-pro1 got me back into photography after I lost interest in the poorly designed digital cameras of the era. Since then, Fuji Film have been steadily removing every feature that got me interested in them. I don't think retro dials are perfect, but the C and A functions make them much more versatile and easy to use.
I traded off my GFX50S II and X-T4 -- replacing them with a pair of X-T5s precisely because the X-T5s are faster and have more flexible control options. If true, I can't understand the Fujifilm logic that GFX shooters are often professionals who need lightning fast PSAM controls. I see GFX cameras more in tune with studio work and in other more controlled environments. When we see dozens of photographers at the next FIFA Men's and Women's Cups using GFX cameras alongside the pitch, maybe I'll change my opinion.
Everyone wants the R successor with the HVF
💯 Fuji missed an opportunity to increase the market for the GFX.
The retro dials seem to make sense. They can be just as fast as you mentioned, plus they are fun. Then, also from a business standpoint, they help to differentiate Fuji from other brands. I love my Nikon's ergonomics, but my Fuji is just as capable, and more fun.
What of the 50R 👀
Yes it would have be cool and very enjoyable coz in med format you get nice big chunky dials with very satisfying clicks.

I agree with Patrick's comments 100%! Go back to 50S controls and add a dial for EC, like the XT5.

there is the 50s with the fuji style dails. But it is old
totally agree with you Patrick
A body with retro dials and a GF 30mm attached would make a nice alternative to a Leica Q3 for many of my uses.
I feel your pain, Patrick. Knobs and dials - so easy and intuitive to use - are going the way of the dodo bird. Sigh! Maybe go with the XT5? Smaller, lighter, less expensive, and more than enough resolution for 90% of real world picture taking.
Good rant. I too would love a GFX with all the dials.

Patrick, I couldn’t agree more and I’m a professional photographer. PASM is a terrible shorthand way of photographing. Give me dials! So disappointed

Agreed, at this point PASM dials are outdated and clunky.

Imagine a stacked gfx50siii that is very very good in low light and can do 4k120. Basically a big ass xh2s. That would be my dream camera.
du liegst absolut richtig 🫡

If this is true, huge mistake on Fuji’s part!
this is stupid. the camera works great the way it is. I don't know what the f*** he's talking about.
What an L 😢
I’m so relieved!! Cuz if they put dials on it I’d have no choice but to run out and buy one😂
😂

Agreed, there are certain functions on a camera that a photographer needs direct and easy access to without swimming through a menu.
Enough psam rings are bored I want a big xt5
I want a GFX 100R, like a Pro body, with the OVF/EVF. Thank you.
For me happy for me they stick to PSAM
It is about time we have to admit that Fuji is not synonymous with Retro anymore. More PSAM dials, more plastic, less Soul. I'm afraid the disappointments will continue...
Fuji missed the mark by not releasing an R mark II. The resale value for the original R is insane.

Medium format version of the X100V please.
Couldn’t care less about this. What I want is an upgraded EVF and better AF. Things that actually matter.
Damned you gave me false hope ! 🤣 the huge sucess of the Nikon ZF just show how much the market wants a retro GFX !! At least they could make a 100R
I don’t care as long as it DOES NOT have the side hinged pull out to the side rear LCD and keeps the current rear screen.
I agree!!! The 50S much better to use than psam. My first camera was in 1952. So 100ii and 100sii should be diff.
I want a X-H1 Mark II as Pro camera and a GFX-H1.
PSAM sucks. I'm out.

somebody has to tell Fujifilm when they make errors ;)
