    Correction, Wantagh Oyster Bay Expressway extended south from Hempstead Tpk to just south of Jerusalem Ave opened in 1965, also Southern State Parkway was extended westbound from Central Ave into Queens (Laurelton Parkway terminating at Merrick Blvd in 1935

    Chris you should add to the map all of the portions of highways/expressways that were planned and never built. Great video.

    It is interesting that you include I-495 (Long Island Expressway) as a part of the "Parkway System" and at the same time ignore a number of major "parkways" that were also not designed by Robert Moses..

    This video is very useful for understanding the time scale that these parkways and expressways were built.

    Remember the toll gates on the ss pkway in valley stream???

    • @davidkastin4240
      @davidkastin4240 2 года назад

      Yes they were 10 cents and then went up to 25 cents. I also remember a couple of abandoned houses between the eastbound and westbound lanes on the Southern State Pkwy. Train tracks were still on the ground at many R.R. stations.

    Now NY state should finish the 135 since it owns the green way to oysterbay and to jones beach and also finish the bethpage parkway to oysterbay that now is a bike path

      @@tracydelaney1323 i would, being that 107 is the only highway in and out sucks, i like the town and i visit often being i live in TOB

      @@Tanneritefilledfido agreed they really should finish the seaford oyster bay, the right of way past the northern termius is there. it's just rich folk who oppose it. lol i live in huntington and it pains me to go to say locust valley without a long windy full of turns way there.
      Bethpage parkway as well as the northern state and 135 all suffer from the same thing, the big boys on the block own the right of way and will never give it up. NIMBY as we called in politics class, Not In My Backyard.

    • @flymaluguy
      @flymaluguy 3 года назад +3

      @@tracydelaney1323 They should finish the route and connect it to Connecticut. If you've ever sat on the Cross Bronx, or Cross Island (Connecticut bound) in traffic you would feel different.

    • @rty1955
      @rty1955 3 года назад

      135 will never have a bridge or tunnel to CT thanks to the politicians that created wildlife preserves up on the north shore.
      Face it, LI is one big dead end street.
      If any of you were around in the 60s, 135 was a parking lot when shifts at Grumman changed.

    Not long after you get on Northern state parkway from Sagtikos Parkway there is a brick building in the middle. I surmise it was a toll or a gas station but really have no idea. Do you know what that was????

    • @ChristianBarba
      @ChristianBarba  2 года назад +5

      It was in fact a gas station

    I would like for a video of the evolution of the Northern State Parkway full parkway from 1966 to 2020 with pictures of the grooved surfacing, the wooden poles and when the current curved poles with OVM Cooper Crouse Hinds Lights, OVX Cooper Crouse Hinds Lights, Thomas and Betts 113 and 125 lights were installed with pictures in color. The original interchanges of the Northern State Parkway with the present interchanges with pictures.

    I really only know the LIE. Used to go out to East Hampton every summer to stay at my grandparents. They bought the place when my mom was in high school. When I was little I don't think the Expressway was finished. Took the Montauk Highway all the way out. Took forever.
