  • I think that part of being a gardener is to do something every year to incrementally improve your garden & take it to the next level. This year, I am tackling all kinds of projects, but this was a big one that involved moving EVERYTHING out of the garden (over 250 Root Pouches), removing old ground cover fabric, leveling the grade of the garden, and then re-covering it with fresh 3 ounce woven ground cover fabric.
If you are considering covering your growing area with ground cover fabric, be sure to do it when the conditions are dry if you can help it. I was forced to till in wet conditions - and then it began snowing, then sleeting, and finally raining on me when I tilled the garden and laid the first few strips of 6 foot wide weed barrier.
Why would you cover a garden with weed barrier fabric? And why not grow in the ground?
To answer the first question, woven ground cover will prevent us from having to weed ever again - that's the most basic answer for why you would want to use woven ground cover - it's a weed barrier first & foremost and will allow water to pass through so there isn't puddling on it. Aside from the obvious function, I think that the fabric gives the garden a nice, clean aesthetic.
I'm also using ground cover because I am not growing in the ground - I am growing in Root Pouches. Root Pouches are fabric pots that are made from recycled water bottles - the most sustainable pots on the planet! Not only are they sustainable, but they produce an amazing root system, as well as top-notch plants. With the Root Pouches sitting on the ground cover, I'm hoping that eliminates any roots growing through the bottom of the pots, but time will tell.
