  • Now that the ground cover fabric is laid, and the Root Pouches are arranged - it's transplanting time! We're in Zone 6, so it's a little early to get most stuff planted out, but you can plant cold weather crops. First, I transplant broccoli plants that I grew in a semi-hydroponic system of Peat Plugs in a styrofoam tray. I was extremely impressed with this system - not only did it produce extremely healthy-looking plants, but the roots were robust without growing into a tangled mess. Best of all was that these plants only took about 5 weeks to get from seed to transplant stage - so it's not too late if you haven't planted yet!
Aside from that I also transplant a few leafy greens crops: Salanova Lettuce, Concept Lettuce, Arugula, and Goliath Spinach that were all growing in 288 cell trays. 288 trays have extremely small cells, so it's perfect for plants that you need a large quantity of - and that you want to get from seed to transplant quickly (smaller cells mean the roots can grow to capacity quicker).
Lastly, I got Evergreen Onions transplanted from a 288 tray into Root Pouches. This was my first time successfully growing onions from seeds and I have to attribute it to a few things: the seeds from Gurney's, the 288 tray, and the Pitt Moss soil mix (Pitt Moss is a soil that uses recycled paper in place of peat moss - much more sustainable alternative to peat moss which is a nonrenewable resource).
To ensure that these onions established themselves strongly, I dipped them into an Endo/Ectomycorrhizal fungi powder. Mycorrhizae is a beneficial fungus that forms a symbiotic relationship with plants roots, growing into root cells (endo) and on the outside of the roots & rhizosphere (ecto). Mycorrhizae colonizes the roots of plants and provides the plant with water, protection from disease & pests, and it chelates nutrients in the soil - meaning that it unlocks nutrients that are tied up in the soil & converts them into a form that is usable by the plant.
