Is modest hottest? Not that we're over here trying to be hot or anything. But join us today for a discussion that we've been putting off for a while. We hope you find encouragment from this chat as we talk about navigating modesty in ourselves, with our children, and why we really weren't all to keen on having this discussion in the first place. We end with a bunch of practical ways to take the clothes you already have and reinvent them into new, fresh,-- and yes, MODEST looks. Hope you enjoy.

I was raised in a church that put all the responsibility on women (and little girls) to not cause boys and men to stumble. I wore long jean skirts for years. After my parents left that church, we started wearing pants. I became ‘tomboyish’ in middle school and refused to wear any dresses or skirts for years. From all of that, I learned that modesty is a heart posture. I may have been wearing a ‘modest outfit’, but I felt holier than anyone who wasn’t as modest. Now as an adult, and a mother to a daughter and 2 sons, I enjoy dressing femininely and modestly! I want to be a role model to them. I also really like what you said, Megan- a lot of people weren’t taught modesty and God still loves them. I don’t want to teach my kids to look down on those who are different. Thanks for braving this conversation, ladies! It was a great one. ❤️

Having lived in several different countries and cultures, I have come to the understanding that clothing is a language - it communicates something to those who see us, whether we intend that or not. For those who believe in the Lord Jesus and follow his word, I think it is really important that we consider what message our choice of dress, hairstyle, etc, send to those around us. They can’t see our heart, only the external. Whatever earthly culture we find ourselves in, for born again Christians, who now belong to a heavenly country, we should seek for our external appearance to reflect that inward reality. 1 Thes 5:22 “Abstain from all appearance of evil.”

I love how charitable you two are in your approach on this! I’m Catholic and I see two camps in regards to modesty; those who care too much and those who don’t care at all. The approach I take is to simply avoid drawing inappropriate attention to myself and leave it there. For me, that also means I have to be comfortable and not worried about how I move or look.

The way I teach my kids is we're not to wear things for the purpose of drawing attention to ourselves. So that would include lavish and provocative clothing and accessories.

Well done ladies! I love how you acknowledge that modesty looks different for many people, and that the important thing is that you are intentional in how you chose to outwardly exhibit your inward testimony/conviction. How we each decide to interpret modesty is a very personal choice. Also love how you acknowledge that it’s not a woman’s job to prevent men from sinning. We chose to dress in a way that makes us feel comfortable before God, while respecting others’ agency to dress in a manner they chose without judgement. Thank you for being willing to get in the trenches with the weightier topics and to treat topics like this with such a respectful and loving hand.

Great video girls. I am Catholic and was raised Catholic back in the 60's and 70's. My parents were very conservative people. We grew up in a very modest household. I have 1 brother and 3 sisters. My mother was a very modest person and I am so thankful for that. We were taught by nuns who of course wore an entire habit. At the Catholic schools I attended, we had strict dress codes regarding the length of our skirts, etc. I continue to be very modest. Thankfully our 2 sons are raising their daughters to be modest and are aware of styles that favor being conservative. It is an uphill battle in these modern times but we can be persistent in our beliefs. Thank you for sharing!

Let’s remember clothing is also very cultural- Indian women wear ‘pyjama’ trousers with a long tunic over it. Tbh more modest than the form-fitting t-shirts you guys are wearing which cling very closely to your bust area!

While women should dress modestly (ie: decent), those passages read refer to modesty in the sense of not flaunting one's wealth when meeting together (church). Take a look at the exegetical and cultural context in the book Nobody's Mother, written by a seminary professor at Dallas Theological Seminary. It's very helpful in interpreting those verses!
    Great topic, ladies!

I love hearing from women who dress like me too!
Im a Pentecostal & it shocks me to see people (mostly online) attack women like us, saying we are "manipulated", "in a cult" blah blah blah.
I dress this way, no jewelry, uncut hair, skirts past my knees & long sleeves, high neckline, no makeup, to please my God, He MAY not require all that, but id rather be just a little more careful in trying to please Him, than seeing how much i can get away with & still be saved, we DONT know a certain one attire, so we are simply careful and take the Bible for what it is, modesty is commanded, so thats simple, the only women who painted their face in the Bible were wicked women, corinthians says long hair, etc.
and as for the pants situation, if i cant look at you & immediately tell your gender, then that speaks for itself.
Our culture has made this whole "live your truth" movement & its so harmful.
I love dressing this way, i feel stylish & have fun choosing becoming, feminine outfits, I am one of Gods daughters. I want others to know it without a doubt!

Not very sensible reasoning there - clothing is cultural (plenty of cultures out women in trousers) and you could easily think a man in a dress is a woman!
I like Megan bit those tight t-shirts she wears aren’t exactly ‘modest’ - really cling to her bust area!

I feel like modesty can look different for each individual. I think you just have to follow the convictions God gives each of us individually. Modesty is really a heart issue. You can wear a skirt that we would call "modest" but with a heart wanting male attention or wear pants without trying to draw attention. We really just each need to ask ourselves the why behind why we are wearing what we wear.

@@jaynaburkholder1507I just don’t think the church you attend should dictate what you wear. You can wear a dress to church and not have to conform to a certain style, be it a cape dress or a denim skirt. I know you don’t like the word legalism but essentially that’s what you are a part of. All of these man made rules are exactly that.

    • @allisont2321
      @allisont2321 2 месяца назад

The rules are only legalism if you are thinking doing them gets you to Heaven. Having standards is not legalism. And maybe a church’s stance on something is the same as an individual’s. That doesn’t mean the church is telling them what to do. If both have standards aligned with the Word of God, that is the way it’s supposed to be. :)

Thanks for covering(pun intended) this topic! Especially the point about sex not being the main focus or determining factor in biblical modesty. I despise that teaching that women can victimize men by causing the men to lust just by existing. Yes there is a line where you could be exposing yourself and being inappropriate but if a woman is dressed reasonably, it's not her responsibility to protect men from their reactions to her. There is a distinction between immodesty and sensuality. They can overlap but modesty is about how we present ourselves before God inside and out, and like you ladies said: aligning our outward expression with the inner posture of the heart.
Cheers for being modest, feminine, beautiful, and celebrating how God made us!

My beef with the whole modesty thing is the whole notion that we are causing boys to sin. It’s not causation. It teaches that modesty is up to women and its the woman’s fault solely so that when women are assaulted they automatically assume its their fault. Thats a terrible thing to teach our families, in my opinion anyway. It perpetuates the patriarchy.

The heart is the main issue for sure, and if your heart is to live humbly and modestly before the Lord all areas will begin to reflect that. I'm so grateful for His continual consecration. Thanks for talking about this! I was raised to dress modestly-- my parents helped me understand the "whys" without overdoing it. So grateful for all the parents/leaders who teach modesty in a godly and beneficial way! Modesty isn't just about our interactions with men, but that certainly is important (men's minds are so different from ours). The guys are accountable for how they think, and the girls are accountable for how they present themselves. I love Jayna's quote: "Your godly, pure heart should be reflected by what you put on your body."

You both handled the topic of modesty very well. Thank you for that. I had to smile when you said that when attending high school, "Boy, were you taught" . Although I do think the issue of modesty needs to be addressed, it should be in moderation. As an older woman I have observed that when men, whether teachers, preachers, or principals, put a big emphasis on modesty, they often have an issue with lust themselves. Instead of dealing with their lust issue, it is easier to blame the women's dress for their problem. They really push the modesty issue, because they think that every other man must have a lust problem, like they do.

I like what Paul Washer had to say about modesty (I’m paraphrasing) You can see a woman and admire her beauty, in the way you might appreciate a flower. You can also see a woman and feel like you need to look away from her because of the way she is dressed. That’s a good guideline for me. I agree with others who said that ultimately, modesty is a heart posture. A person can dress conservatively, but if their heart is not in the right place, then that’s a problem.

I have some questions for both of you:
    - How would you react if your daughter asked you if she could wear pants on some occasions?
    - Was there ever a time when you weren't happy with the dress code of your school/church and would have liked to wear shorter skirts, pants, shorts, etc.? Did you ever try it?

Thanks ladies, I think this is a really important conversation for our day. I think to Jayna’s note, it’s really really important to explain the whys behind what we believe and why we do what we do. Otherwise, you don’t help propel the behavior or morals that you want to in future generations, and it will either create a scrupulosity or total rebellion. Both are bad for the soul. I would say that regarding the Bible and modesty, I think it touches everything. It’s not just about clothing, finances, how yih appear, but even about what you say and how you say it and your motivations behind it all. It really is a deep issue that is not as superficial as what you wear each day. It goes deep to the soul, what are your motivations for what you’re wearing? Wear do you want people to be looking when they look at you? Right? We have to ask ourselves these questions and be honest about it. To reiterate, it goes the same for what you spend your money on, or the types of things you reveal about yourself in conversation. I think as far as what we see in public and how to discuss with children, we often say something like, “Not everyone is a Christian, not everyone loves God and we can’t expect them to have the same morals and standards as we do. But we can pray for them.”

The church I go to is a pretty traditional reformed church. Though I've never heard modesty expressly preached, I've noticed that all the people are modest and do dress modestly (I think modesty is both a disposition and a manner of dress). I do believe that it becomes the natural outward expression of a believer to want to dress in a God-honoring (and not human pleasing or attention seeking) way. I love topics like this, especially since you were raised in this tradition. You have a unique perspective and really great practical tips on how to dress this way without looking drab. As someone from a totally different upbringing (secular Swede) and practitioner of a totally different faith (paganism) I'm probably as far away from you as possible when it comes to these questions, but it's still interesting and fascinating to learn about other views.
in my day to day life I probably come quite close to your version of modesty (except for wearing trousers, of course) because that's what I feel comfortable in. But in the correct setting, I'm really comfortable being naked (yes, even in mixed company). For me, it all depends on the situation. If I go to a church I'll cover up, on the beach I'll wear a bikini.

I grew up attending a United church until I was about 8 years old, and I’ve struggled throughout the rest of my life to have a meaningful relationship with God. I’m not sure what I believe in now (I’m 31). However I love your videos; the podcast, your DITL, homemaking stuff, hearing about your experiences as a Mennonite. It somehow adds a little bit of lacking spirituality into my life and I really enjoy that! Thanks 😊

Great topic! One of the things I struggle with is trying to put together outfits that don’t look frumpy. Even though I am cradle Eastern Orthodox, my parents never really had strict guidelines on how I should or shouldn’t dress. So I’m still getting used to putting together dress and skirt outfits. Now that I’m older and married with children, I dress in dresses and skirts. However, even if I wasn’t married and didn’t have kids, I would still want to dress classy and feminine.

Sometime ago God share with me that the motivation of modesty is love. We are called to love one another. For some women, it an exposed body part can be a stumbling block because they have a past and for other women it can be a stumbling block because they desire a different body type(not accepting how God made them) And of course it can be a stumbling block for our brothers in Christ too. So because of my love for God And those around me, I choose to not reveal parts that might make someone stumble. When he told me it was all about love it just made sense.

Recently went to the lake for picnic and ended up feeling a bit uncomfortable as no matter which direction we looked there were young women, some very young teens and girls in g string (thong) bathing suits. My husband ended up saying let’s go as he didn’t want anyone to think he was looking inappropriately, I felt the same. Made me sad for these young girls particularly that their parents allowed them to dress this way. Different when an adult you do what you like. Might be ok when swimming but bending over and doing things at a picnic, playground on shore is a different matter. I’m all for freedom of dress as a woman but protect your kids.

I think modesty is only a hot button topic for people who are either feeling convicted of their choices and/or are not confident in their own choices. You ladies covered this topic well. Being a Christian drives my choices regarding clothing (and every other area of my life) but honestly, I think there is a place for modesty no matter your faith. I choose to honor the Lord with my actions and words but it is also honoring myself. I’m not Mennonite and I do wear pants but my parents also raised me to cover myself. I still very vividly remember a time when my dad walked passed me as I was doing my hair, so my hands were up, and he saw that my stomach showed when doing that and he made me change. I was frustrated in that moment but boy am I grateful that he cared enough to do that. He taught me that not all attention was good attention and to value myself. ❤ GREAT TOPIC!! 💜

Very good discussion! I think the problem comes when the whole burden is on women to not lead a brother to sin, rather than teaching young men to respect their female peers with dignity and respect. Modesty is, as you said, a matter of the heart, and you can dress attractively and still be modest. We don’t need to look like old ladies! ( even if we are!)

I truly learned about modesty when I learned about God’s AMAZING, passionate, and jealous love for us and the amazing sacrifice Jesus made because of His unconditional LOVE for us. I also learned a lot about this from hearing a man named Todd White speak and I actually just saw he is coming to Lancaster, PA soon! You would NOT regret going to one of the events he hosts or checking him out on RUclips! But I know from my own experience that you can be radically transformed by the evidence of the burning, passionate love of Jesus Christ and the reality of the life we have in Him, at one of these event, and just by learning how God truly sees us and what He says about us and to us in His amazing Word. I love you guys and thank you so much for helping bringing that same truth myself and to so many others and committing such precious hours of your lives to being such Godly inspiration to so many!!! I work with young adults and dressing modestly allows me and them to focus more on work than me or what I am wearing. Sometimes they will still bring up that I wear “prairie dresses” or whatever but I have experienced fewer awkward situations (like 18 year olds asking for my number 😬) since I started wearing dresses and long skirts. I didn’t dress immodestly before but there has been a marked difference going from jeans and dress pants to long skirts.

One of the things that I think the Bible talks about especially for men is to be aware of your immodest thoughts about women. I am not religious at all, but I am culturally Jewish. When I got to college, a lot of my Jewish peers assumed that I was Orthodox just because I dress in a relatively modest way. I’ve always dressed with simple colors, high neck lines, non-tight and well tailored clothing, and simply in a way that shows my respect for myself and encourages other people to see me as mature and respectable. Most of all, it makes me feel confident and put together! I appreciated your thoughts on this topic, even though they come from a very different perspective than mine.

I’m Catholic and we have been taught to choose completely modest clothing and cover our heads with mantilla in Church. We were never used to wearing even a mini skirt or anything short or sleeveless as far as I can remember. We girls are taught to wear clothes that are not form fitting, not sleeveless and nothing less than knee lengths. But yes we do wear pants but mostly not to Church and we prefer mostly dresses and feminine clothes. And men wear only formals to Church. This is what I’ve seen unless they are non practising Catholics or those who left I guess like how you mentioned about the Amish. And our education is centered around Christ in Catholic schools and we have strict dress codes monitored by nuns and taught from a very young age why we should be modest in a Christian way. And this applied to both boys and girls. And Inherit is nice.

One thing not explained often is the difference on a man's heart when he sees a woman in immodest clothing, as compared to a woman. He will react differently and must withdraw from the temptation. A woman usually, if raised, or taught modestly in all aspects doesn't have the same reaction. Natural response is reserved for marriage between a husband and wife. When a woman leaves her home she dresses to help men avoid sin. It's actually charity on her part. I am not going to address the whole "it's not her fault if a man is inappropriate" issue. We know this. People who are not raised to respect their and others bodies, are not going to understand. I agree.

I think it’s valid to say we do judge on outward appearances and that’s why God calls us to dress modestly. We are to reflect dignity and grace and I think if you are not dressed appropriately you aren’t doing that.
I also think relating modesty to things like wearing a $1000 suit is related to prudence. Is it prudent to buy expensive clothing or is it prudent to spend an hour on your looks every day?
I really feel like all of this is common sense and people will try in any way to justify why they do or don’t do something whether or not they are right.

I am in complete agreement that women should dress modestly. But I don’t believe that always means wearing a skirt or a dress. I have no problem with women who do that, but I also don’t believe it’s completely necessary. The whole yoga pants in public trend is obviously, not anyone’s idea of modesty, but I do think pants can be modest. I raised five daughters and teaching them about modesty was not easy. I also raised three sons, and teaching them to respect women was a top priority. This is a difficult topic, especially in today’s world, and I think you ladies handled it very well. Also, as a small sidenote, men also have a responsibility to dress modestly.

But im definitely healing from it. I personally wear jeans, leggings ect. But dont show a lot of skin. I feel that any church that has rules enforcement is wrong. It just perpetrates abuse. I’m not Amish but we living in Wisconsin right in the middle of an Amish community. Last year a man was arrested for assaulting his 3 daughters. In the police report his wife stated that then person who reported this sinned worse than the one committing the sin. I was shocked! How can a mother, not want to protect her child. How can she think it’s a sin to stop abuse? A mandatory reported filed this with the police; more than likely the local Mennonite doctor who saw their oldest, 16 year old daughter. Because of the abuse in plain communities and their ability to “hide” from police our children have strict rules when playing on our land- they can not play alone and if they see anyone they must run home as fast as they can.
I am SO sorry you were abused as a child and I will pray for your healing; Jesus loves you and NEVER approves of abuse. He is clear that anyone who hurts a little child will be better off havibg a milestone tied around his neck and be drowned in the sea.

It’s something I’ve struggled with because I love the beach but am very uncomfortable with the immodesty. Of course little boys are not as affected in the same way as men are by almost naked people. But by bringing children to these environments is it not telling them it’s ok to put ourselves in situations where we may be heavily tempted? Thinking of places in the Bible which teach to abstain from things that would cause us to stumble, and setting no evil thing before our eyes.

It’s an uphill battle here because I like to dress modest but he doesn’t like the look. 😢
