Great work with a genius song. Thanks alot!! Back in the summer of '67, this was the cut that was played on top 40 radio in conjunction with the release of the Monkees' album Headquarters. Strangely, it was never officially release as a single. If it had been, I truly believe it would have transformed the trajectory of the Monkees' career giving them the recognition that they justly deserved.
Wow what a beautiful tribute, thank you so much for sharing your talent! It has truly brightened my day. I too watched The Monkees either on Saturday mornings or afternoons, and also saw them a few times live, except for Mike. My first Monkees show was 1986 (?) with Herman's Hermits, and wow I left with a very happy heart; it was magical.
Fantastic job. Obviously you have put a substantial amount of effort into this cover. Please listen to the studio session of this song. There is a Dm in the chorus for only a couple beats. Love light. Starting near. I have only heard one cover of this song that actually picks up on that little different.
As someone who has loved the Monkees for decades, has appreciated the talent of Nes in particular, and has found “the one” around my 50th birthday, this glorious cover resonates deeply.
A great cover !! This song and "You Told Me" are two of my favorite Monkees songs. I've always wanted to learn how to play them both on the drums. Could you do a cover of "You Told Me" also ?
What an amazing video!! Nesmith is one of my heroes, he Lennon and Hayward inspired to play the guitar! One of my fav songs!! So cool you're doing it all here! Captured Mike's voice too!!
Well, that made me cry -- in a good way. My favorite of all the great Mike Nesmith songs. Just brilliant. THANK YOU so much. Hope you will do more in the future. Can definitely see you rocking "Sweet Young Thing."
Just like the original, 2:09 seconds of bliss 😊 Great performance Russ , I’m new to your channel but enjoyed every song that you have covered. Hope to hear some new songs soon .
One of my favorite Monkees tunes. Our family got the Headquarters album when it was brand new. It remains one of my favorite LPs, and this song is a favorite from it. Very nicely done.
Hello Russ…. Well you just blown me away with your fabulous RUclips channel. Not just your performance and arrangements of your songs, the discriminations is full of information. Had to subscribe. Well Done… Mike from a very wet South Wales. Happy New Year.
Great job, Russ! I’m like you, grew up with the Monkees, I was 8 when their first album came out and I was glued to the tv when their show was one! And I had the hand puppet too! Never got to see them perform live, but I still have their first five albums. That must have been surreal to hang out with Micky in the bar on the cruise, very cool!
Ah yes, the hand puppet. I had one, too! Every now and then I see them at antique stores, but they're always pretty expensive. I'd also beg my mom to buy the cereal with their record pressed into the back of the box. I was lucky to see the band twice over the years, and just Micky on the cruise. Thanks so much!
Excellent! My favorite Monkeys song. I started the guitar when I was a kid after hearing this song. I am 56 and still stink, but I sure loved your cover. Superb:)
Russ: Oh. My. Goodness! JUST discovered you, your channel, and your talent. Pretty much speechless. Seeing you covered Mike Nesmith's You May Just Be The One, I picked it as the first full tune of yours I listened to. Oh. My. Goodness! So, do you (or did you ever) "play out", as in, play in a band? Do you still? I will be anxiously awaiting to hear! Stellar job, Russ...stellar!
Wow, thank you! Yes, I've been playing out for about, well, lets just say 'decades'. Currently, I'm the drummer in two bands....Under The Sun and Closer to 9.
@@russwilloughby501 ...Russ, I'm thrilled to know that you share your talents not only here on RUclips, but also with other musicians in Under The Sun and in Closer to 9! I too have played in bands...as you say..."for decades", as a guitarist / lead guitarist / vocalist. Where are you located? "IF" I'm ever near where you are & perform, be assured I'd try and catch a gig you're playing!
This is great! All the parts that I remember from the original are there. Awesome! I did a similar thing last year with a few Stephen Stills tunes. It's such a fun thing to do :)
Nice cover Russ . Well done ! The song of his that stands out for me is "Joanne" . Might be a difficult one to cover. It's got some high notes! Keep up the good work.
Outstanding Russ like all your other videos. Can you tell your followers more about yourself, background and how you arrived to this point in life with these renditions?
Thanks so very much! As for me, I'm 57..been playing drums since I was 7, guitar since I was 13. No formal training. I started doing these videos just about the time covid hit; mainly as something to do since I couldn't play with the two bands I'm in. So glad to hear you're enjoying the videos!
Thanks so much. I actually have several acoustic sets....but I use them for live gigs. I play out two or three times a month, so I'd find myself lugging them in and out all the time. The Alesis kit is less hassle and it only takes up two tracks.
I liked quite a variety of the 60's music. I bought a lot of 45's and albums but never did see any of the bands live in concert when they were at the height of their fame and popularity. I have since seen a number of groups and individuals at oldies concerts between about 1985 and 1995 mainly. There were so many great shows with talented performers, and I think I probably enjoyed the concerts even more as an adult than I would have as a teen. I will say Peter Noone of Herman's Hermits at a late 80's oldies concert came off as rude while trying to engage the audience and called someone a "fat terd," which disappointed me. I also did not particularly enjoy a performance by Dion because he was booked at an oldies concert then wanted instead to perform a lot of new songs he had written. In 1999 on a Caribbean cruise we saw Mike or Mickey, (I'm embarrassed that I don't remember which, but it was a long time ago for me). Then the four of us in my group shared an elevator with him and the lady accompanying him. Not a really big deal, but fun for us! Overall I have a lot of good memories of some great music. I can't say often enough how happy I am that I came across Russ' channel, and as far as I'm concerned he's a legend himself. I'm here constantly and never tire of watching his performances over and over. A great big thank you, Russ! I've told all my family and friends about your channel.
Wow, Abner, thanks so very much; I really appreciate the kind words and your reflections about the shows you've seen. So glad to hear you're a regular visitor! Also, many thanks for sharing my channel with your family and friends! Best to you!
Great work with a genius song. Thanks alot!!

I love the Headquarters album! Thanks so much!
I don’t recall hearing this one but I really like it 😂
Im 65 years old. I was a huge Monkees fan. This is one of my favorite songs by anyone. Thank you for the spot on performance.
Wow what a beautiful tribute, thank you so much for sharing your talent! It has truly brightened my day. My first Monkees show was 1986 (?) with Herman's Hermits, and wow I left with a very happy heart; it was magical.
Thank you so much! I didn't get to see them until I was in my, I think, 30s...but I never got to see Mike.
So did I but can’t remember this
thank you for this memory Russ
Thanks for listening in!
Mr. Nesmith must be smiling….nice tribute. 👍🏻
Thanks so much, Tony!
This was awesome! An excellent tribute to Mike Nesmith.
Thanks....I appreciate it very much!
That twangy bassline is the best part of this song. Peter Tork actually played it on the original record.
Yeah, I love that bass line! Thanks for listening!
Best cover of this great Monkees /Michael Nesmith song I've ever heard...Papa Nez is smiling down on ya!
What a lovely tribute! I have fond memories of the Monkees, and this is one of my favorite songs of theirs.
Thanks so much; I really appreciate it!
Such a great song. Transcends time. Always a favorite. Thank you for the brilliant cover, as always.
Excellent! RIP Mike.
Many thanks!
Awesome Russ! Thanks so much. It was sad news about Mike. We have his music, he will live forever.
Thanks. Yes, very sad. And I agree...he'll never leave us.
My fav of Papa Nez's songs.

A sad day for many of his fans, but a great tribute to Nez. Another excellent job Russ. Thank you!
As always, many thanks....so glad he was able to finish this last tour.
One of my favorite songs. Thanks

Mike Nesmith was highly under rated. Great job Russ. Would love to hear Joanne.
Much appreciatedand I agree: totally underrated!
Great cover of a great song. Nez was pretty special.
A great cover !! This song and "You Told Me" are two of my favorite Monkees songs. I've always wanted to learn how to play them both on the drums. Could you do a cover of "You Told Me" also ?

Nice of you to say....thanks!
One of my favorite Monkees tunes. Our family got the Headquarters album when it was brand new. It remains one of my favorite LPs, and this song is a favorite from it. Very nicely done.
It's a shame HQ didn't do better on it's original release; they worked so hard on it. Still, it IS a great album. Thanks, Mark!
Great cover. One of the best I've heard.

P.S. Subtitle ;-)
Thanks, Stan. It should be in the Smithsonian in the Pop Culture section.
Thank you!
Adoro !!
