I have to say this is a cool idea for a drum vid. You get behind the scenes type stuff in the beginning and then a smooth transition into a legit drum video! I loved it! And Derek is the man. Smooth as butter ✌🏻❤️
For a kit that has no sound control, it's a beautiful big wide open monster. I love it! With different heads or just a moon gel an Evens EQ Ring kick head, or just felts that Bonzo used it would be perfect in a snap. I'm listening with 4 sub's so the kick is way too wide open to literally just a ring. If only all kits naturally sounded this great! That's quality, man do I want one! I have never heard something so amazing with absolutely nothing more than a quick less than perfect tuning! I wonder how much the price tag is? You get what you pay for, and this is OUTSTANDING QUALITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Interesting how it sounded at the beginning than when ran through the mixer. That floor tom had a real “boing” to it. They mixed that out and gave it good, clean sustain. You can’t beat DW resonance though. They’ve just got the right formula.
I can remember many years ago going into a very small shop somewhere in LA. and looking at some custom drums from a new unknown company called DW. I never imagined they would become so big.
photographerjonathan That's innovation. They don't fuck around with a bunch of bullshit lip service when they market. They build a product that speaks for itself. So much so that their prices are our if sight. I make my own drums but I'm a DW lover all day long.
They were a side division of a TAMA line called CAMCO. They basically kept the spec's, look and lug style. It's almost the same drum, but have made some state of the art changes over the years. CAMCO was always a world class product, just fantastic. My brother had the CAMCO custom maple kit with the hand made inlay, this is it without the inlay. Great kit!!! static1.squarespace.com/static/532b0f38e4b0521b78afb0c4/568ed855dc5cb46c9e693c03/568ed8f705f8e2a3bfd7a6c8/1452202401484/Drums+LoRes-5338.jpg
DW was never a side division of Camco. The son of the owner of Camco took drum lessons at the Drum Workshop which was a school and pro shop at the time. Camco was purchasing designs from DW in the 70's and when the owner decided to sell he approached them and asked them to buy. DW acquired the tool and die division while Tama purchased the name, existing stock and all patents and copyrights. DW never built "Camco" kit. They used Keller shells and their own specs from the start. Camco drums were made with Jasper shells and had entirely different specs. DW just built their drums using Camcos old tools.
I absolutely love everything about DW drums since the day I bought my first Canary yellow maple 7 piece kit with built in May drum triggers from Danny Seraphine. 😊
DW makes beautiful, high quality kits that are way out of my price range and class as basic drummer., but I highly recommend them to anyone serious about their craft. even the most basic DW kit is the pinnacle of craftsmanship.
Dave, I agree with you completely. I’d been dreaming of a DW kit for many years and finally saved up and got myself a Performance Series kit. I couldn’t be happier with it.
@@highefficiencycommunicatio7383 I happen to have a Design Series kit in Midnight Blue Satin, and to quote the lumpfish guy, that kit is very beautiful, very powerful. The toms are a bit smaller and shallower than on my old Pearl kit, but I actually like that better!!!
My boy Taylor just got one of those kits in his studio in Nashville... I'm green with envy... sat down for a bit... those are very nice drums, maybe even the best sound ever.... DME studio... I won't drop names.... but some serious percussionists have been playing there....
That kit sounds awesome! Looks great too! Like mine ;) really like Derrick's playing. Glad he's with Adele perfect drummer for her music. I listen to Adele a lot while traveling around the states on those long interstate journeys. Cool Derrick! Keep groovin'! 🥁🎶😎DC
They sound both dark and dry while having a little bit of high-end snap (which I'm assuming the Maple helps with) on top. I'll have to find some other clips of these drums.
Because this is recorded with one or several room mics (or maybe just a good camera mic). My point is, when drum videos are recorded with tom- kick- and snare microphones, they all tend to sound the same more or less. They are overly EQ:ed and overly compressed. This gives you the feeling of actually hearing the drums in person.
@@jonasgustaf Most of what is in the drums is marketing fluff, 80% of the sound comes from the room you're in, the mics you're using, and where they're placed. The other 20% is the heads, tuning, and of course the way the drummer is playing them. You're dead on in this take.
Red rum1 .. totally agree Red .. i got a Collectors series maple kit back in 2005 and it and it sounds as great today as it did when it was brand new ...
I have this kit and i wish it came with a 14inch rack tom i have no clue how to get one and cant find any rack toms in that size online in the collectors maple/spruce
I have played a number of high end kits and I keep coming back to DW. Over the years I have had ludwig classic maples, tama star, yamaha recording customs, yamaha oak customs, yamaha live oaks, yamaha hybrid maple, gretsch renown, pearl masters, sakae almighty birch, then last year I got a DW collectors Birch kit and the search has finally ended. I am planning on getting a new DW collectors this summer, either a straight maple kit, or a cherry gum jazz shell kit. I wish I started when I was gonna end up, I love DW drums. The best drums out there in my opinion.
Hey DW what is the difference in manufacturing that makes the price go up. I’m looking for the best sounding kit without any concern over what it looks like. All about the sound. Help!
Our Custom drums are generally more expensive. The options are endless so that can affect things (shell types, hardware, exotic veneers or custom graphics, etc. If you are interested in Maple you should check out our Performance Series Drums. The finishes are limited but they are made to order right next to our custom drums and sound amazing!
The individual drum mics have way too strong gating. You can only hear the ghost notes through the overheads so it it sounds like the snare is moving further away from you when he’s using ghost notes. Would love for a more natural recording. Sounds amazing otherwise!
David Mattacks Compression would bring down the transients or louder parts to bring them more in line with the quieter parts (ghost notes for example). Compression would be the complete opposite of what is happening here.
