Merkavas were never used to transport troops/infantry like an APC because they would have to remove all ammunition in the hull to make space. The closest they ever got to carrying troops with the merkava was during operations in Gaza where they functioned more as armored ambulances that could carry at most only 2 stretchers. They did create an APC called the Namer based on the merkava's hull with heavier armor.

From my perspective Merkava made to functional well both in urban warfare and open warfare(despite the giant size it have).to be specific,merkava 4 have good armour and quite a punch gun compare to other The drawback is the size and the weight of the tank which just too big and heavy..this made it really vunrable to the enemy.the concept that the engine could protect the driver is good..but idk if it practically well doing..cuz if your tank get stuck in the middle of battlefield and can't move what is the functional of the tank right?unless there a practice of towing the tank in the middle of battle.. nonetheless the protection that it give to its crew is guaranteed unlike the russian t72 and it's variant tank that give no shit to its crew..either way economically I will choose russian tank tho as it's cheaper and work in practical despite of no cormftable that the crew get and it's lighter so any terrain is good for it to move
Actually no, as we have seen in Ukraine- "any terrain is good for it" does not hold the water. I would rather be inside this tank surrounded by whole army, aviation, navy and whatnot from my allies then being "fast and furious" in ruzzian tank that is rushing toward Ukraine mine or waiting to catch a falling bomb.
I wonder why a first class army keeps its top ground weapons in what must be the least convenient staging / depot area, where just lining up the tanks becomes a major exercise Other than that, it‘s nice to see a real tank. Heavy, noisy, smelly, deadly.

Hey, great comment. I think the Eitan is in service right now, after it completed the testing in June 2022. might be around 15 of them in the army now. You know how is goes, it takes 2-3 years to manufacture a lot of them. But this is the next generation of IFV/APC where designers focus on survivability and protection, that is why they will equip the Eitan with "Iron-fist" Active protection system.

Thanks JY. I read a report that during the 2006 war in Lebanon that one Mk4 had 11 jam packed inside!! They were leaving the front with wounded infantry. I am guessing that was including crew! But I'm also not sure that it was! lol. Goes to show what can be done when you need too.

The Merkava is a tank created from a compromise: they wanted to build a tank focused on crew survivability, but did not have composite armor. So it was decided to put the engine up front and build a tight wedge-shaped turret. What was once a clever solution is today very much in the way and does not allow full use of modern solutions. Despite its imperfect platform, the Merkava in its latest versions has many great technologies and solutions. It has an iron vision system that allows you to see through the hull thanks to VR, a well-armored turret, an excellent communication and battlefield observation system, a modern fire control system, and active hard protection against enemy missiles. This is a very modern upgrade of an already obsolete tank, but Israel doesn't need anything better, as it has long left its opponents far behind.

That's right. Chains cause premature detonation of kinetic projectiles (ammunition used by Soviet tanks, and hand-held anti-tank grenade launchers). The balls at their ends are designed to keep the chain under tension. This solution works similarly to lattice armor, but does not interfere with turret rotation. The patent was invented by Israel. Over time, it was copied by many Arab countries, and more recently by Russia. In 2016, the same solution was also seen on the Polish PT-16 pre-prototype.
Ok CHRIS good query ! the ball wand chains are an anti armour protection : anti tank useful ... particularly against the RPG7 etc the idea / concept that it will detonate the warhead of the rocket BEFORE any turret armour penetration or serious armour damage! the 66 LAW or M72 LAW had a warhead that acting on both GRAZE and impact or hit ! ANY MODELLERS WATCHING this is clearly easier to replicate on those 1-35 scale models rather on 20mm scale SOZ that I can't recall the ISRAELI /HEBREW name for the system ? Cheers CHRIS
They were put on to accentuate the crushed red/burgundy velvet interior of the tank and they were originally a very bright chrome. Some of the shine seems to have worn off after all these years...the IDF is getting complacent lately.

The current cannon can handle Israel's potential adversaries just fine. If Israel needs an increase in firepower they will probably go with uranium-core ammunition. This ammunition has similar characteristics to tungsten ammunition, but does not require a longer barrel. Tank modernization is really expensive, and there are many more costs involved than just those associated with buying new components and fitting them to the tank.

thats how you move any tank.. one man behind and one in front :) should replace view port with cameras. so that the driver/crew can use oculus rift or similar, and have 360 degree view. should be very possible and relatively easy to do. making thermal scope and such, is alot harder
This aint ww2 no more blud. Apfsds and heat/missles cannot shot trap like ww2 ap shells. Apfsds gets destroyed when it bounces and heat is basically incapable of bouncing.

1st - yes, that camp is where the tanks are placed for maintenance and standby for war. 2nd - the Eitan just got into service in the past year.

It is tight however, not like an APC, but it is a very useful mission feature.

that's a mechanism that spays diesel on the engine, for creating a smoke screen. it's common in all tanks, as far as I know
