Thanku so much ❤️ yes you can paint on melamine plates and use them for decor purposes. You can simply use 2 coats of acrylic color

How tom protect the ceramic plate painting from water and other damage...Do you advise some kind of coating or varnish over it? Please suggest

Gesso will act like a primer and give you a smooth base. You can also apply 2 coats of Acrylic color
