When you know Fiona Apples lyrics they become like crack I swear she is super addictive to listen to. So original and outside the box. You will never find anyone else out there like this woman. Pure artist.
Well said. I'll often describe her to friends as a writer's musician, only because I write, and I am constantly moved by her craft, by her ability to use words unlike anybody else. There's nobody like her
Norah Jones, she reminds me a ton of her. In a gooooood way though
@@alisonpiech8781 just listening to some of Fiona's stuff for the first time and I immediately thought of Norah. Have listened to her since I can remember
she was ahead of her time, her songs always hit like the top chart.
Fiona knows. At this level, she just knows.
When you figure out that you do too...that's when you see exactly where she is.
Love this woman! 😎
Find Xavier Rudd...see my soul.
I met Fiona many many years ago in Venice Beach, I had just got my first camera and started taking pictures of everything around me. I saw Fiona but I didn’t know who she was at the time. I thought she had the most beautiful gray eyes, and I asked her if she didn’t mind if I took her picture, and she said yes, sure... but she told me you don’t belong just behind the camera, you belong in front of it!
She picked up on my low self esteem at the time and I thanked her for the compliment.
Now 20 years later I’ve been in front of the camera just like she said.. she planted that seed in me and it grew.
Nice story.
MsGechi77 Thank you so much 😃🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
U should write her , or contact her on social media and tell her that!
Lauren Hahn Hi 👋, I thought about that concerning Instagram, and I thought because I lost weight, I don’t look the same as I did then, and it was 20 or so years ago that she might not remember me. I’ve noticed that entertainers don’t communicate with people on social media outside of their circle of friends. Believe me I thought about doing exactly what you mentioned here, but I also no longer have the photo I took of her back then. It was back in 1995 I think and I kept the photo a long time until it got old and didn’t look so good anymore.
Fiona said you have potential
I think her music literally saved my life several times during my two decades abusive marriage. Her lyrics said the things I longed to say out loud and the emotions in her songs were the only thing on the planet that mirrored how I felt
Me too. I was in a LTR with a narcessist, and Fiona's music literally saved my life. I remember sitting in the car, so alone, listening to Tidal and feeling not so alone. I love Fiona.
@@themaggattack @Mulefa so sorry for what you went through. I was in an on-off affair with a narcissist myself. Narc abuse is devastating isn't it. I was definitely helped by Fiona's music too through difficult times, her lyrics really perfectly encapsulated a lot of my feelings in those moments. Sad how susceptible vulnerable and trusting women and AFABs are to narc abuse (a lot of neurodivergent people too). especially)
Me too, I was empowered by music in general, this woman show that we are very strong, and that was what we need...
Me too
I am a 53 year old male and Fiona is my Joni Mitchell. She's my Janis Joplin. She is THAT KIND of singular, cosmic talent. There are couple of things about her that always come to my brain when I hear her music. The first time I heard her entire debut album was one of them. I was utterly amazed that someone that young could write music with such reverence, depth of reflection and skill level. I read her lyrics as my jaw dropped more and more with each song.
Another moment I remember acutely was the first time I saw her live. I had the privilege of seeing her perform at Sunfest on the waterfront of West Palm Beach, FL. I thought she was having a fucking meltdown in front of thousands of people.... contorting her body and throwing herself to the floor as she got more and more emotional with each passing song. As if her soul was fighting for the ownership of the song with her physical body. It was something amazing and frightening to behold , all at once.
And lastly, the first time I heard the song "Fast As You Can". I literally listened to it about ten times in awe and green eyed envy at how bold and precise she was in her lyrical and musical genius. No standard verse chorus verse. Just her spewing the most accurate and heartfelt venom in the most poetic form I have ever had the pleasure to read and hear. I still play that song to this day for people who THINK they know music. And I love their same wide eyed, opened jaw expression I had many years before. Fiona is a treasure and I love her for it. My life and love of music has only been enriched by her being in it. So...Thank you for all of the gifts you have given us.
52 year old here...The middle section of "Fast As You Can", is what made me a fan, back in '97-98(?). She blows away ALL her contemporaries (Adele, Beyonce, Aguilera, Gaga), in my not-so-humble opinion!
I WAS AT THAT SUNFEST CONCERT! So good, her manic movements were so empowering and added to the intensity of the performance
I agree. Her songs are my entire love life.
“Fast as you can”
I darling it’s so sweet you think you know how crazy I am...
What would an angel say? The devil wants to know...
...waiting to be consumed by you...
Then the new album is all of it again at 51.
Genius.
Rob P. Wow love Fiona, Joni, and Janis too wow
I love her spirit, she helps me breathe…in a culture that suffocates. Such a gift
Beautifully put.👌🏾
Omg wow… this brought tears
I've written something almost verbatim on another one of her videos. I see you, seeing her, now seeing me see you see her, hahaha. Authenticity is the only real currency, and Fiona is rich.
😂🎶 we are all the more wealthier for her wealth! How beautiful it is to be defiantly, WE.
I love how deep and complicated she is and all the many ways she expresses so many important feeling's so effortlessly. She is so relate able for me, I think most often we feel misunderstood at different times in our lifes. I admire her for her simplicity in the way that she reminds people to be themselves in style and originality, I remember when she made an appearance on the red carpet many years ago and they were asking her who she was wearing that night and you could see she was annoyed with the question she replied "Target!"
She needs to make more music coz only her songs can justify what I feel
shivani makode she just released Fetch The Bolt Cutters, officially proving one CAN make a perfect album (omg it’s amazing!!! So much richness in every song!) AND proving someone could actually make Fetch happen! And when you listen to it you’ll know why I said that. Cuz a lot is about being bullied in school & impressions it left on her she conveys thru a song. So now she’s the cool kid finally & overcome a lot of that, & everyone better just let her make Fetch happen now cuz tbh she’s the worthy one to do it. Fetch never happened cuz Regina the biggest bully wouldn’t let it happen. So it’s the flag of the underdog now thank to Fiona. Love her so much.
New music is slowly coming out soon.
@@SpecialK3 ikr
Sharon L. Ware it’s a quote from Mean Girls movie. Regina was the queen b of their school. Gretchen went abroad and came back with the word “fetch” as the new slang, except the running joke in the movie was anytime Gretchen used the word, Regina would say “quit trying to make fetch happen... it’s not going to happen.” So technically all these years that was the only viral response to that word... till Fiona drooped this album and made fetch happen with the title! Cuz the album is that good! So yay Fiona finally made fetch happen!!! So just a little Mean Girls joke cuz she has some songs on the new album about being bullied and about when she was in school. 😉
Sharon L. Ware 😉
Her new album is helping me live through quarantine. One for the ages.
Yesss
timing is everything!
Indeed
And revisiting all her prior albums with a new awe all over again.
Yea shes getting me through these dark times
I’ve always loved you, Fiona. You’re a brilliant artist, lyricist and my favorite musician. I’ve always regretted not seeing you live. Please give us another opportunity. I wish you the best and think of you all the time.
No one's talking about When the Pawn or Extraordinary Machine ...Tidal was amazing but she's the only artist I know who consecutively put out 3 amazing bodies of work in a row. The words...they are everything
This last one is the best!!!
When the Pawn changed my LIFE.
I think if you had Tidal, you had the other 2 as well.
Thank you for this well thought out and nicely edited compilation. I've watched all these clips over the years, but putting them into this order with your direction makes it feel like a legit documentary. Well done.
When parents love you enough to help you follow your dream.
👏👏✊
Seems like her parents did all the right things raising her. She's a wonderful person. She was raised in N.Y. and CA
And also to be fair some privelege comes into it. Especially these days sadly, you really can't get into this creative industry and make a living without connections or an already secure income.
“What do you do when your friend is upset? You write a song for them” ....ahhh I just love her! 💗
Ah man wish she had been my friend growing up would've felt less alone with my weirdness and intensity. And having a song from her would be the highest compliment. 💓
Amazing and well put together. She is my fave singer songwriter and its lovely having so many performances and statements all in one complete film. I was one of the original Free Fiona participants and remember vividly sending our apples to Sony!! Good times.
Thank you for your service!
Amazing when did the apple drop (scuse the pun) that it was actually Fiona holding the album back to re-record it?
@@priscillaeyles3301 I don’t think it’s quite right to say it was FA rather than Sony. Sony was demanding that she submit each track for approval before giving her the funds to record another track. She had never encountered a demand like that before. She didn’t want to put Sony in a position to supervise her creative process and tinker with details of her work (or end up with the rights to a recording she was proud of but not release it), so she wouldn’t give in, and there was a stand-off. Only after the Free Fiona people publicly harassed Sony did the company give in.
@@BillHaines37 thanks for educating me and great job for helping getting Sony to back down! Do you know who started the website/campaign? Or was it a bit more collective/leaderless? 💪🏾💪🏾👏🏾👏🏾📢
I was recently listening to a BBC podcast on Britney Spears (Pieces of Britney I think it was called) and they name checked the Free Fiona movement as a precursor to the Free Britney movement, which I think is quite the compliment.
Power to the people!
Hi Priscilla - Thanks for your nice reply!
I was no part of Free Fiona myself; FA hadn't gripped me then as she does now. FA herself didn’t even learn about it until it was well underway. Recently a friend of hers has said on Tumblr that “the force behind” the movement was Danielle Moscato.
fionaapplerocks.tumblr.com/post/654003853529939968/our-friend-danielle-has-been-stopped-for-crossing
As that post mentions, Danielle was a victim of bigoted abuse by the police last month, and a local court will have its turn soon. FA and her friends and fans and others helped Danielle resist and recover, and there’s still time to help.
FA herself has been increasingly involved in various kinds of citizen project to protect the vulnerable, especially Courtwatch:
ruclips.net/video/bL2-n4Av3z4/видео.html
Her vulnerability seems unusual but it's not, it's her awareness and honesty about it that sets her apart.
She's one of the rare ones in the show business meat grinder who had the fortitude to stand up to the dehumanization.
we should all be like her, the world would be better. Love from Mexico, you are absolutlley right
When I heard 'Sleep To Dream' on the radio for the first time I was blown away in a similar way to when I heard Nirvana's 'Teen Spirit' for the first time. There has not been a third time something like this happened and I doubt there will ever be.
oohh you gave me goosebumps, I agree completely and believe for the third its going to be your words that stop us dead in our tracks!
Well done. Thanks for sharing.
🦋Fiona Apple is absolutely the definition of an Artist to me. The authenticity, vulnerability, & emotional depth she swims through to birth, create, & perform her music... truly, gifts her audience with something very few artists are able to do. Fiona takes her listeners on a journey in & through raw, real, bluesy, soul-filled emotions.
She is so fucking brave!
☀️I love her!
🙌❤️🙌
I’ve been obsessed with Fiona Apple since 1997. Tidal album is still just as good now as it was back then. ❤️ This answered a lot of questions about her life for me. Thank you for this!
Fiona Apple's music helped save my life. I could hear a tortured soul coming through her harmonies and lyrics that made me realize that I was never alone, and it was as if she was speaking the words my soul felt, but my mouth could not utter.
Same
Same to me.
Yep. After I narrowly avoided being sexually abused in my early 20s her album was one of the first things I put on. She really helped me through some difficult times, her alongside other female singers like Amy Winehouse, Kate Bush, Bjork, Tori Amos and Laura Veirs.
you like GoT and Fiona apple? my ring finger is so barren 😩
@@kevinwaters6799 So is mine 😂 it's SOOO hard to meet people. There was this 5k in Philly for pride and I'm 10 mins from there by car, so I took the bus figure I'd meet a cute guy etc even just a friend. And I get lost and can't find it, end up walking miles getting bubble sized blisters before finally going back and c 😭catching the bus home without meeting anyone. I wasn't going to run either I volunteered and I used to live in that fuk'ng city 😂
Fiona apple was 81 when 18. Beautiful and insightful writer.
One of the best singer songwriters of all time, and drop dead gorgeous. Whats not to like?!
The reason I love fiona is she reminds me that it’s okay to feel anything that I feel and express it.❤️ love her. Nice compilation of videos!
Can't believe this just now came across my recommended vids. This was put together so thoughtfully. Excellent work. Thank you.
Love her vocabulary, it lends so much richness to her lyrics.
Fiona Apple is like gold and honey and soul. Tidal, sank in the burrows of my gut. When the Pawn ... delighted my spine and mauled my senses. Fiona is 5 for 5 an artist of extraordinary masterfulness.
Eloquently put. 👌🏾🌷
Thanks for taking the time to make this Kevin. Fiona, I love you.
I can't thank you enough for putting up this documentary!!!
Who’s here cuz of her new album?!!! It’s sooooo good! Critics are loving it.
I can't even *believe* I didn't know about this documentary! I guess the algorithm knows best, but you'd think I'd have seen this ages ago as much as I listen to Fiona.
Speaking of timing, what a miracle: to release this new album during the time we need it most!
🍎🍎🍎
Critics are talentless hacks anyway. Their opinions don't even matter.
...but it's definitely nice to see that they aren't picking on her and her amazing record.
@@clicheguevara5282 criticsm is always important to have. Just because they don't always fit with your taste doesnt mwan they are meaningless
@@שירןתורגמן-ג6ק I 100% agree... in principle But I've been in the music industry for my entire life. I'm talking about the *business* of music criticism, not the idea of music critics. I'm talking about Rolling Stone and Pitchfork. However, I think some music critics are very insightful. I disagree with him on a regular basis (because music is TOTALLY subjective) but Anthony Fantano is a critic I like - because he's honest and it's also apparent that he actually understands music and production.
@@clicheguevara5282 Thank you for saying it beautifully. I feel alarmed whenever someone discredits every platform of criticism because they cannot handle it. However, whenever someone wisely criticize the platform itself, I have to agree
Moral of the story: don’t ever expect the mainstream to appreciate or understand you if you’re a light.
She's really a child prodigy. And so great!
Her lyrics, her musicianship, her instrumentations, her beautiful soulfulness, her love of doggos…. I honestly adore her.
She's on another level..in all ways of the spectrum! The way her emotions spill out of her you can feel !!!
“The way her emotions spill out of her you can feel” love this !
Yes I suspect the Autism 'spectrum' also has sthg to do with it.
@@priscillaeyles3301 thats definitely not the spectrum I was thinking of. In the spectrum of MUSIC . SHE is just awesome. Anyways just want to mention that.
@@chuckmartinez769 I know but I also think you can't separate the two personally. There's a reason a lot of great musicians are Autistic or Neurodivergent. We can feel things more deeply and that can come out in a need to express things creativily, contrary to popular belief that we have no empathy. Sadly there's still a massive lack of awareness of this, which is I why I think it's important to point out.
I’ve always loved Fiona since she came out in 1996. Tidal to this date is one of my all time favourite álbums, it brings so many memories and it’s joy to discover everytime she releases a new record
Ditto
Amazing work putting this together, what a beautiful and complicated artist Fiona Apple is. Thanks.
Is there a love button???? This is amazing, thank you. When I discovered Fiona's music, 1990's and I'm 48, I thought what a voice, she sang like an angel and moved me so much. Her music got me through my 2nd pregnancy in 2000, I would play video games and have her music playing and sing to my belly, lol. This was a great video!
Gah she is an amazing woman! She helped me thru depressing teen years... now thru this strange time of loneliness thanks to covid..
Shine on Fiona
One can’t help but being inspired by this woman. Such a blessing for many. I love her so much.
To sad for those who can"t recognize creative artistic talent. That means your missing out on Fiona Apple. She is amazing. She is a style of her own creativity which comes from within.very few have come along like her.
like elliott smith, john frusciante solo project, etc in music.Hamony korine and some films of gus van sant in the cinema, reymond pettibon and baskiat in painting and so on.
Thank you so much for this documentary. What a shining light she is. Completely honest and imperfect. It's crazy how much people help the world by just being uniquely themselves. Very lovely
When I see little Fiona at her piano tears come to my eyes. I don't know why, but she touches my heart and I fall more and more in love with her each time I hear her music and see those hypnotic eyes of hers. What a stunning beauty and a musician of unsurpassed talent!!!
Superb selection of performances, interviews, late night show appearances. Why i love her almost like no one else in the music business. She is one of a kind.
Her new album is phenomenal!
Fiona Apple is probably the only singer/songwritter i have unfailingly been a fan of since the 90s.

Fiona is and will always be one of my inspirations. Her music is so raw and forthcoming. It is so nice to hear her share parts of her musical journey.
Que lindo! Ela merece todo o nosso carinho e respeito! É uma pessoa tão especial e única!
Fiona is my deepest music love, she taught me english, love and pain my teenage Brazilian self surrendered to her passions
literally fiona has wings, she's an angel on earth, and this documentary is such a masterpiece, thanks for this
It's absolutely mind blowing to know she wrote and performed songs on her first album at 17 and 18 (released when she was 19)... It's like, I mean, I don't even know how to process that. If they were trite, poppy songs, I'd get it, but so many of them are legit deep!
@1306 Prodigy, thy name is Fiona Apple.
Also teenagers are capable to reach depth, as adults are uncapable. It's not an age thing.
@@maralonsoquiros5628 There's a depth that comes with experience teens are usually incapable of having.
Laura marling did it younger and is still killing it she has an extensive discography and is prolific in her writing. There is a depth and richness to her music since she was 16..
@@gingerzOMFG Thanks for the suggestion. I'll certainly check her out. Would you be willing to give me 3 songs of hers you think people should hear? Her discography is extensive, and I'd hate to start out with the wrong songs.
I have always loved Fiona's music. Artistry taken to the highest level. A beautiful woman with a beautiful soul.
I know she's not just a 90's one hit wonder singer but listening to her voice makes me feel so nostalgic about that period of time. I'm glad she's come back. Always love her music.
She's so real... in such a fake world.

Please make another album and tour Fiona. There is nothing real and passionate out there anymore! And thank you so much for your music. I used to love to write poetry and got picked on so much in school for it. You made me feel normal. Thanks for that

It was nice to see so many video clips of Fiona that I'd not seen before, and to have them interspersed with the interviews. There are many great female vocalists that I love to listen to, but none as much as Fiona. She definitely has wings.

Thanks for making this documentary. Fiona is magic! Her perception towards world is a gift of insigh and honesty! Her lyrics are a gift of depths and layers. Her voice is a gift of intensity and drama. Her personality is a gift of self discovery and search for the harmony!
Above it all is her genius at musical composition and musicianship

Thank you for this ❤
I saw her once and hope to see her again! It’s been at least 10 years.
One clip I love that moved me and I’ve shown others is when she played with Elvis Costello… she came onstage for one long song and just wow. You see how her emotions, or I guess the character in the song takes over like a possession. She is able to bring it out in every single song, I’m so blown away by her. I forget about her for months, maybe even years… then I do a whole Fiona day going through everything of hers and getting obsessed again 😂
Thank you Fiona for always being yourself! I like to be alone at my house, like you. There is such a comfort. I don’t know what it is, I guess I can just be me with no judgements! A lot of people judge it (it is oils drive most crazy) but I’m totally ok with it 😂
I played piano when younger… I was too shy to pursue a career. Thank you for sharing your music. You are a light to so many ❤

The things that this girl writes about, her music and the lyrics bring out so much emotion that you can feel and they compliment each other so well...
