This is the engine bay audio from my Prevost XLII-45 powered by a 12.7L Detroit Diesel Series 50 rated at 500 HP, backed by an Allison B500 transmission with a retarder driving from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway back home to Kansas City after the 2024 Eclipse.
This is raw, unedited audio from engine startup to shutdown, nearly 10 hours worth!
This was a drive through the flatlands. I intend to record similar audio on drives that go through the mountains, and include driving videos (audio and matching video) on some of those pretty mountain drives. Let me know if you have other ideas for similar clips you'd be interested in.

Ah, the beautiful soothing sounds of a Series 60 Detroit! Ted, you've knocked it out of the park on this one! Love that sound from the engine bay, with the exhaust mixed in as well! I can litterally fall asleep to this amazing sound! I'll be listening to this as I'm falling asleep tonight, imagining that I'm on a road trip in the RV with the Series 60 singing along! I hope there will be tons more raw unedited driving ASMR's coming! Here's a couple suggestions: first, if you can, please get more of the exhaust sound, so I can hear that throaty exhaust up close! And second, I know you were accelerating from a stop gently at some points, but I'd love a point kind of early in the next one where you stop, idle for a minute, then do a full throttle acceleration, shifting at high RPM's, so I can hear that Detroit and its amazing exhaust at full volume as it's shifting up through the gears! Just a couple suggestions for you to add on the next one! Other than that, make sure to do this same format, from startup to shutdown. Please let me know ASAP if you have any questions, and I look forward to the next driving ASMR!!

I've actually thought about doing this exact thing. Your recoding sounds great with a good balance of all the elements! Where did you place the microphone? I'm a sound engineer with an obsession for field recording.

On the Prevost there's a fairly large empty metal floor on the passenger side of the engine bay. It's thick enough that I was able to drill a mount in with a couple of self-tapping screws. I just added an Amazon link to the mount I used in the description, you may need to refresh the page to see the link.
It took a few times of experimenting to get the settings right, but I'm happy with how it came out.

This is hilarious, I wonder how many views it will get.

Believe it or not this was actually a viewer request after my 10 hours of idling videos a few months back.
So far its views are beating my average for a fresh post. I’m not sure whether to be happy that it’s doing pretty well or sad that my more technical videos are less popular. 😂

Does your coach have an engine brake also or only a transmission retarder? Love that sound

@@nomadbiker4040 It's a retarder only, no engine brakes (either Jake brake or exhaust butterfly valve). I would've preferred to have Jakes but I'm finding the retarder is nice, very smooth. I'll do a video about it in the future.

@TedsGarage very nice. I owned a 1999 Freightliner Century class truck with the 12.7 DD series 60 and that truck was excellent, had over 1.4 million miles when I sold it. Your bus sounds brings back some memories!
