Can I remove the back strap when I do a cross on my back?

Thanks for the tips, very helpful. Indeed I was not familiar with the strap at 1'05". So, what does it do?
Another issue I keep running into is that my baby does not sit completely level in the carrier. What's the best way to correct that?
