  • This video documents one of the very first builds of the new Zenith CH750 Super Duty STOL aircraft kits. The builder incorporated a number of innovative modifications to the aircraft design to provide a better match to its mission in the Alaskan bush environment. The kit was finished and flown from start to finish in approx. 80 days. The aircraft seats three occupants and is powered by a Viking 180 HP turbocharged Honda based engine. More information on the aircraft and the engine can be found via their respective manufacturers: Zenith Aircraft and Viking Aircraft engines.

    I was in Mexico, Missouri during a Builder's Workshop last week when this plane stopped by on its way to Alaska from Florida. In fact, I was in the air during my test flight when Roger Dubbert spotted it. Let me say that black exterior showed up nicely against the background. Very impressive build and it looks like a solid beast on the ground.

    Hail and good morrow from Central Wyoming!
    You've given a beat up old Neanderthal yet further impetus to keep a hold of that dream to have an outstanding STOL Craft under the sport pilot license venue!
    I watched a ton of videos over the last couple years, and there are some great and amazing rigs out there, but some folks think that 60 or $70,000 is Affordable, and that is not the case with me!
    This is why that Merlin PSA out of the Czech Republic is looking better and better, but it is not a true STOL!!
    I still like the 750 SSD for what it can do, as I I'm going to sell my house here in Wyoming and moved South Central Alaska to retire.
    I hope that you've made more of these types of hands on videos, because seeing the actual work in process, provides a far better understanding then mere explanatory!
    Thank you for your hard work and effort from a beat up old Neanderthal in Central Wyoming!!!

    Left off the most important mods: the Beanie Mod and VGs. The low spot over the cockpit interferes to a great degree with airflow, creates a lot of turbulence and reduces rudder authority at low speed. The Savannah fixed that issue. Also, the slats don't work any better than vortex generators but have a significant penalty against cruise speed.

    Great vid Jon,loved the extra tips, tail strike and rudder fairleads,wonder what the minimum engine you could use for the SD would the 130hp viking do or do you have to have 180hp, obviously the 0-200 would not be enough read somewhere that you needed 50hp per person

    This is not a "how-to" video, so it's best to watch at 1.75 speed. He only sounds slightly faster than normal in speaking (he's a slow talker), and you don't miss anything in the video.
    But a good overview of what to expect if you build one.

    Who makes the electric rivet puller? Also, another corrosion protection question... does Zenith use 2024 or 6061 aluminum in their construction? Would make a big difference whether to prime the inside or not. Thanks for the GREAT videos!

    • @jamesbrown68yt
      @jamesbrown68yt 6 лет назад

      Based on my copy of the Zenith Construction Standards doc, Zenith uses 6061-T6 Aluminum Alloy.

  • @acengineer737

    There's some good ideas there Jon. But why no corrosion prevention during the assembly? After all the aircraft is going to be used in Alaska where it's damp
