I think she’s top 3 best guest you’ve ever had. She goes straight to the point of your questions with a lot of good advices. I hope you invite her again soon.
What a deep well of information you are on the whole movie spectrum Shannon, glad I found you, we are literally starved for information such as this in Australia, thanks to You Tube , and you, we now understand it all from one place, keep talking.
I love how Shannan says “ooh” after the questions because it reflects exactly how I react to this interviewer with most videos. She asks such good questions! And is so respectful, letting them finish their thoughts; and her contributions to the conversations are always relevant, not self serving. Whoever you are interviewer lady, you’re awesome. Plus you have that classic podcast voice that I can easily listen to for hours.
I would love to see more of her. She's definitely top 3. A lot of the guests give nebulous answers. Like actors tend to do about the craft. It isn't helpful if you're not in the business and able to read between the lines. A lot of ethereal language that leaves you feeling good but more confused. She is crystal clear and concise. Her direction is actionable. Great interview!
hi film courage! I am a sixteen year old writer and today, almost entirely because of you (and some very helpful friends) I completed the first draft of a 40 page kids play. I am super proud and also SO grateful for what you do. THANK YOU!! ps. your video with Eric Edson was literally what started the play two and a half months ago so thanks to him too 😃
@@kena.8003 omg this was so long ago!! I finished the play, it ended up being about 50 pages long or so. I'm nineteen now, I've written a few others but nothing got off the ground due to COVID happening :/ I'm still so proud of my accomplishment though and plan on writing more soon :)))
This was a masterclass. As a writer, I can't begin to express how grateful I am to get feedback and notes! It truly takes a village to write a story--YOU DON'T HAVE THE WHOLE STORY JUST BECAUSE YOU GOT THE IDEA.
no strings attached and friends with benefits. Funny she mentions friends with benefits because that's what got me writing screenplays. Not that it was the best thing Ive seen but certain scenes just hit home. That's why I respect films and tv they inspire lazy dreamers like me to act on the life we want. My screenwriting mentor always told me that the best thing about filmmakers is that they get paid to recreate their pain and that's a terrifying feeling of excitement especially when other people can relate to it.
This is such a fantastic interview. I can’t believe I learned all this for free. I’d love to be in development - my writing is okay, but I’m really good at reading things and spotting problems with flow, continuity errors, plot holes, etc. I didn’t even know there are jobs where you’re paid to read all day (the dream lol). Thanks for this!
She is the first one of these I have heard who it seems to me makes a lot of sense and with whom I don't have to get through a bunch of obscure analogies to understand.
Wow.... I was hesitant to devote 2 hours of my time to watch and listen to this because I had never heard of Shannon before but she really knows the industry and provides very solid advice. Glad I watched!
I’m dancing in my study rn! I’ve waited for this compilation for ages! I can listen to Shannan for hours and hours. So when I saw the 2 hour length, I almost screamed with excitement 😃😁. Thank you Film Courage.
Film Courage I’ve listened to it several times now. Taken plenty of notes too for my current (and future) WIP. Thank you, thank you, thank you for uploading this 😊
It's not about what she was saying, her energy and expressiveness and confidence in which she showed love in what she is doing put me in such a mood and state of mind I did ground breaking solutions to my story layout. I am deeply thankful
OMG it feels sooooo good to hear her speak on the passion of EDITING!!! I think a lot of us say "I want to be a writer" because its socially promoted more. But we are the ones who are total nerds in English class, learning all of the "mechanics" to writing. Technically speaking, almost anyone can 'write', but its the skilled writer who can edit.
Shannon is really really cool. She is very clear with her advice and communicating her knowledge. It just helps as a writer to have very concrete clear pieces of wisdom and advice.
She is excellent. And yes we just interviewed her again. Here are the first two segments ruclips.net/video/QKbd-IiorCE/видео.html & ruclips.net/video/_3llptMjRMk/видео.html More to come!
I call what she does precisely what an editor, a real editor, does. Strange how it becomes like a novelty when it appears in the industry. But whatever the genre, the fact that her focus is on film screenplay structure doesn’t change the editor’s craft. This is also what a research advisor or dissertation director does. Instead of story, it’s argument. And so on. The parallels are so clear. Or a conductor. A writing director. The creative interaction that gets to be experienced is transformative, just fascinating.
This is invaluable. As a writer, filmmaker and creative in general, I enjoy most of the interviews you all post but Shannan is dropping infinite gems here. Thanks, Film Courage!
Love the nonchalant way she says if it’s not working for the story then just leave it out. A lot of writers tend to hang on to certain scenes because it’s their favorite or it’s super cool but the way she’s says just leave it out takes all the pressure off of making those tough edits.
Excellent interview and fantastic advice!!! I especially enjoyed the portion where Shannan mentioned how she told her students to read screenplays in the genre and the style that is in their particular lane.
Thank you so much Shannon for posting this, it has been very helpful, insightful and informative and entertaining. You encourage me as a writer. I wish you much success. I prayed for you. God bless you. Saturday, May 13, 2023
Shannan speaks the type of English I daydream to speak 😂. Fluent, Clear and articulating. You just hear her speaking once and you know she’s dope in her field. I need this woman to read my script.
I love to watch and listen to Ms. Johnson. So expressive with honey toned voice. Magical, which makes me suggest that SHANNAN should be re-orthographed to SHAMAN saving the stroke
Been a writer It is a confident road. We never know when we are ready to write so it is better to think that we are ready when we are not and write something that we can learn with by feedback and practice than somebody telling you that you have to spend a subjective amount of time preparing your self making you doubt about your capabilities and ending up waiting to write the first page. This is art. JUST SIT COVER YOUR EARS AND WRITE. YOU DONT NEED TO BE PREPARED TO WRITE YOOUURR STORY.
this is great. i have great ideas a few elements but not a full story. i'm stuck in the idea phase. i need to develop my story giving my characters a journey
Hi Alex, thank you so much! Great to see you find value with our first interview with Shannan. Our second full interview with Shannan goes up at 5pm PST on February 26th.
I have no interest in writing at all, but every second of this was interesting. Both the questions and the answers were very thoughtful. I learned stuff.
At 52:44 did she just give an example about GAME OF THRONES. She said they wanted “HER” to reach point A to B but this character would not do those things. And then she said it’s all over Facebook and Twitter about got rage from fans. I may sound be far fetched! But seems like it was game of thrones.
We know she offers various screenwriting services. We have only interviewed her so we wouldn't be the ones to rate her services. But we had a great time with her and many people seem to love her and this interview. Her website is listed in the info section if you want to investigate further. Best of luck.
I wanna know that does the director doesn't let the writer let be on the set or he keeps him or her around to do some changes because if I want to be a writer I want to be on the set because I want to see my work come to life even if I am asked not to interfere
She is AWSOME. I love writing so thank you for being so painfully frank. I’m at the bottom...I need to get a grip. My question is if you sell your script and the changes happen, do they take your name off as writer and replace it with theirs? How sad if that is so.
Love minute 39:45 - 40:15 - writer cannot stand outside cinema and tell the audience "What I meant was..." Every musician would probably want to invade your car home or ipod and tune your player finely to their music.
Wonderful interview and very insightful! Btw we all know the character she's talking about near the end of the first hour.... **ahem ahem** Daenerys Targaryen **ahem ahem**

Yeah, a lot of the other guests just talk around the subject and never really seem to get to the point
Agreed. Really like that she gets straight to the point.
