    Sprints are heavily underrated. They´re not only great for explosive strength, but also the no.1 fat burner if you use them in HIIT training. No matter, if you´re gymnast, calisthenics athlet, bodybuilder or whatever. More people should sprint.

    This is an excellent vid, I competed back in the 90's and while I trained for all the events, my favorite, and what I was best at, was tumbling. Alot of the training was built around muscular endurance and skills, we would train for three hours a day and while that builds muscle it's not going to bulk you up to your max potential the same way hypertrophy training does. That being said, I got into weightlifting after competing and for the longest time I didn't have to do much to train my legs because of what I gained from gymnastics. All these years I pretty much still don't have to put much into legs. Plus, most gymnasts, not all, but most are short like me, and the shorter you are the easier it is to bulk up, even with that muscular endurance style gymnastics skills training.

    Great info! I agree that Gymnasts train to develop skills ... not big muscles. Yes, their training does result in some impressive physiques but that's not the goal. The same can be said of course to any other sport. Besides, every time I hear someone say something about skipping "leg day" I look at those huge monstrosities the BB calls legs and want to skip it myself. That kind of freakish development just doesn't do it for me. Personal choice of course.

      Can relate. As a female ballet dancer, my structure is super short weightless torso + endless extream strong and flexible legs. We avoid heavy legs like the black plague. Actually, there' s a branche-school named after Balanchine wich changes your body shape drastically. At the same time you win strengthness and endurance, quads, sartorius and harms become thinner, elongated, and way more powerful. Otherwhise, we could not raise and mantain our legs neither at 90° neither touching the ear. Calves are unavoidable due to pointe shoes work but not a big issue.

    What do you think about weighted calisthenics like weighted pistol squats, step ups or sissy squats? I have been doing single leg movements for some time however I feel that progress has slowed and is adding light weight with a weight vest something that like an option?

    • @olaf5929
      @olaf5929 2 года назад +4

      If you want to add weight you stick to simple movements like squat, push up, pull up, dip. They're movements which mostly resemble natural movement of your body. Muscles grow fast but it's the tendons and joints that fail over time with resistance training since endorphins dull the pain. The day after a work out you can't move your arm or on your way home your knee locks up and then you likely need surgery.

    I think with a lot of pre-exhaust work on isolation exercises, and hard bodyweight exercises like pistol squats and eventually adding jumps etc. in the mix, a person might build bodybuilder style legs. It might take 2, 3 times the volume but it is not impossible.
    Simple weights like water canisters, kettlebells or the weight of a training partner might go very long on the road to muscle hypertrophy.

  • @DoomsdayDisciple
    @DoomsdayDisciple 2 года назад +2

    It’s really just a confusion, or lack of understanding, about what certain words, or terms, mean. I think some people confuse hypertrophy with strength. That is to say, the size or striations of a muscle, is commensurate with how strong said subject is. Strength is relative, meaning, one can be lean, or skinny if that makes you happy, and still be strong. One can most definitely look like Ronnie Coleman, and be strong. It depends on HOW you train, and what you are training for. On the flip side of that proverbial coin, one can have big muscles, yet not be as strong as someone who is lean. I think power is often confused with strength. Yes, it stands to reason, one can train to be strong in different ways, but I’d argue that gymnasts, or other such athletes who train for static strength, flexibility, and explosive power, are more completely balanced (strong) than most other athletes. Yes, bodybuilders are strong, without a doubt, however, ask a professional bodybuilder to execute an obstacle course, or a parkour route, and they probably won’t make it halfway through before their muscles just can’t respond in the ways needed to finish. For my money, I’d rather be lean, flexible, and powerful in all angles and body positions, and still be able to move quickly and efficiently. Easier on the joints and all connective tissues, which grossly get neglected when primarily training for hypertrophy. Being strong at the maximum stretch of your connective tissues will make your body much more “bulletproof” and do so much more for your longevity. 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼

    In facts gymnasts have huge legs especially women have over sized legs. So not sure what year you are in.
    What I hope you can help with, is providing data on future of gymnasts at older age, and how they live with the injuries, as well as the effects of all pressures and stretches through the years of practice in younger age.
    Thanks.

      Female gymnasts tend to be pretty short. So it may appear that they have huge legs. But the truth is, they just look big because they are short.

    Great topic I'm a little bit confused I've watched some videos on RUclips some of them don't recommend training legs at all, as a calisthenics athlete I want to achieve certain skills like front lever, planche..My legs are a bit skinny i do a weighted leg session once a week just to strengthen my lower body and having an overall aesthetic physique and not having huge legs that's for sure, should I stop training legs?! what do you recommend?!

    • @GymnasticsMethod
      @GymnasticsMethod  2 года назад +3

      I recommend to train legs because id you don’t you’ll have an imbalance and for example your lower back can get hurt. At least with bodyweight

    Im loving calisthenics
    But man my legs respond like 5x better, they grow significantly faster than my upper body. I literrally skipped them for like 2 years and in just 7 months they reached the same level as my upper body
    So rn im in a big dilema, my legs make calisthenics harder, but i think that theyre my best part

    I don't think gymnast's legs are skinny, they look(and are) strong. Bodybuilder huge legs are just for "asthetics" not performance, and let's be honest, the most of the time those look freaky.
