I recently upgraded from the a7III to the a7IV. I really wanted the a7sIII, but the price was too much for me at this point. After shooting plenty of wedding videos, real estate shoots, and a couple of commercials, I can honestly say that the only thing keeping the A7IV from being a great video camera is the lack of FF 4k@60 (or 50 for my use in EU). I shot a whole guest house in 1080p, and upscaled to 4K, since the crop factor makes shooting real estate impossible. The clients were very happy anyway, but I knew that I left so much IQ behind.. Still eyeing that A7sIII for that reason alone. I've invested in FF lenses already, and I don't see the need to add APC wide angle as well, just to fight that crop, since the price of adding a good quality apc wide is about the same, as upgrading to a camera that can actually shoot FF 4k@60. My point at the end of the day, is that even 2 years later, A7SIII is the only camera, that can shoot FF 4k60 w/o overheating, below 5.5K USD or 6.5K in my country.
I had the FX3 for about a year and never really needed 4K 120, actually never used it. For economic reason due to the pandemia where I live, I sold it and my A7RIII and got the A7IV and am totally happy with it. Actually like the 4k 24 even more than the FX3. I do photography and video on most shoots so it is the perfect combo although I do miss 60p FF 4K bc I usually shoot 90% of my work in 4K 60p but I can deal with it. Once I get my 17-28 tamron, hoping a G2 comes out soon, I will be just fine with 60p 4K crop mode. I never shoot wider than 24mm any how.
Using mine daily for professional work the past 2 years and really couldn't be happier. It's a fantastic workhorse camera! I still use my A7R3 for most of my photography work, but the A7S3 gets the job done in a pinch even with the lower megapixel count. Most clients are posting to social media and 1600w is plenty of pixels.
Wild to think it's been 2 years already...Sony really ticked all the boxes with the a7S III. I think it's easily (for video) one of their most important releases over the past 5-10 years, and will probably be viable for just as long.
It's a powerhouse for sure. This was the dream camera for many Sony video shooters for many years waiting after all. No plans to upgrade until the Sony A7S IV -- its performance will hold out for a few more years imo. In the meantime I'll invest in glass and drone tech.

For photos, I use GigipixelAI to help with boosting resolution from my a7s3. I. Thinking of getting the A74 mainly because it has higher resolution but more importantly, focus breathing compensation.
I can’t honestly see any reason why this camera will ever be made redundant. I also don’t see any reason why anyone would ever release any video project higher than 4k. I will be happy watching 1080p until the day i die. I don’t like looking at a 4k screen, it’s too sharp and realistic which makes it look like actors on a set. I only record in 4k to post crop. If there is one camera I am waiting for it would be the rx10 v. I’m hoping they improve the stabilisation to somewhat like their boss systems in the camcorders. That and a flippy screen and 10bit 4:2:0 4k 120, same lens. Downsampled from 4k 1080 240fps with clear image zoom x2 to get 1200mm… This would be a dream camera for wildlife videography
Reminder for photographers who primarily use social media to show their work: Apps like instagram compress ALL photos down to 1.5 megapixels. So even if you crop the heck out of a 12 megapixel photo, you're still likely to have more than 1.5megapixels left and therefore your image will still look almost exactly the same as say a 24megapixel photo that is also being compressed down to 1.5megapixels. IMO if you're cropping most of your 12MP photos down to less than 1.5MP, you should focus on fixing your composition before blaming it on a low megapixel count
Absolutely agree Steven, I came from film, so there was no crop. I`m moving from my 5D mk iii which I always use on MRaw 10.5 mpx to the 7siii primarily because I don`t like and I don't want those crazy mpx! It's a waste of storage! As you said, work on your composition!!!
Love my a7siii! I am sure something will tempt me in the next year or 2, but honestly this thing does everything I need and probably more. Great video.

As a first camera u should definitely go for the A7IV instead, newer body, higher megapixel, 7k sensor, focus breathing comp, and its 1k cheaper. Its kinda a no brainer

I just upgraded to the Panasonic S5 when it went on sale here in the states, and I couldn't be happier. Yeah, yeah, autofocus.. blah blah. But the image quality that comes out of that camera is INSANE. I was going to get the A7Siii, but I was able to pick up the S5 and Lumix S Pro 24-70 2.8 for around $3300, which wouldn't even get me the A7Siii body. That was the clincher for me.
@@PeterLindgren1 Oh, it's NOT great. There's no doubt about it. I have mine dialed in about as good as it gets, but it can't hold a candle to Canon or Sony. I just didn't think the AF was worth the $2k price difference, haha!
"blah,blah" and we don't think about missing moments. Almost 95% of the time I trust a7sIII AF while you will getting bored with your S5 and wasting time to focus pull.. :D
@@CHTFilms Autofocus in photography is generally fine. You can also use a snap focus feature in manual focus to get the camera to autofocus once to a particular spot instantly. It’s only in continuous autofocus do you run into any trouble.

I really loved shooting with this camera and video was amazing also with clear image zoom. Low light was incredible. But I just couldn't deal with the low megapixel, I had to purchase the a7iv, ofc you don't get the same iso sensitivity but a7iv is great for me overall.
The crop mode on A7iv is very nice, as autofocus tends to go to shit even with clear image zoom on siii. A1 is probably king for small film camera as has both crop mode and 4k 120, and 8k! bit expensive tho! I love the viewfinder on siii so the fx3 isnt too tempting.
The FX3 is now set up for CINE EI and to function like a cinema camera. The differences are vast now after the update, and the FX3 is a much different camera now.
I just went back to the Olympus Omd e-m1 mark 2. What a mouthful. I absolutely love that camera for photos but our of camera in video is horrible. I love how my Sony looks out of camera, yes ive done a couple of tweaks but I really feel I need a 24mm focal length and I just don’t have the money for it right now so I’m making do with what I have. The A7s3 has been on my radar from the day it was announced and I would have owned one if there were no shortages, different times now financially and with the recession and cost of living crisis in the Uk I will not be making any major buys. Maybe by the time we are out of this situation we might have the a7SIV. Who knows.
If I had known Sony was releasing the FX-3, I would have passed on the A7S III and waited. I am familiar with the handle/XLR input from Sony camcorders, and I prefer that. The A7S III with the XLR thing attached is awkward and feels vulnerable. OTOH, the viewfinder is brilliant.
@@MarioSoMedia It's not as bad as some say. I only do 4K60 and have never had it overheat. I don't film in greater temps than the low to mid 80s though, and even that is too hot for me.
I love my a7siii but my a7iv footage looks better. With that said my a7iv's are always on tripods and overheat a lot easier in the environment I film in. The a7siii has never overheated! I am waiting for the next mid price range Sony camera to come out on the market before I upgrade again.
@@63MacGuy lucky! I have 4 of them and they overheat if the temp is over 90° in my studio. So I had to add an a/c unit and an exhaust system. Filming BBQ is too hot and spicy for my a7iv's I guess!! ha ha

The a7sIII is too old now. Why don't you get the a7IV? It's getting older too, almost a year now, but at least you will have some months to use it before switching to something more up to date. Also why the Tamron when there is a GM II??
Great thoughts in this video. I’m feeling the want to try something new from my usual Canon gear. That said I need to upgrade and the latest Canons are so much further advanced that my current kit, it might be enough to keep me interested. I’ve been tempted by Sony many times and the A7siii is a big one for that. The cost investment in switching bodies can be somewhat reduced by adapting lenses but there’a sometimes a downside in comparability performance. You briefly mention shooting most of your content for your channel and client s on the Sony. Could you go into more detail of client work, types of work, how you get that work and how it fits into your business model? Would love to hear your honest approach to this. Cheers, JT
Used the a7siii on a huge client event for taking photos.... If you know what you are doing.... The pictures will turn out great. I love being able to use the view finder. But yes if you have to crop.... Don't print it 😂😆 but you can upscale anyways so that doesn't even matter now!!!! 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
HI I currently shoot with an older Xt3 and im looking to upgrade. Im trying to decide between 2 full frame cameras. The new Lumix s5iix or the older Sony A7siii. My use case is video only and im currently focused on realestate videos and some weddings, client work ect. My main concern is for filming real estate in 4k60. What would look better a7siii 4k60 or the lumix s5ii 4k60 cropped? Most high end videographers in the real estate industry use a7siii. Taking everything into account, noise, low light, Dynamic range, image quality ect which is better. My goal to get the best quality 4k 60 video. Thank you
Very good points about the A7SIII and it's understandable you won't spend another $4K on the FX-3 just for the sake of switching. Me... on the other hand.. who's just getting into the video hardware update after the A7III, I'm getting the FX-3. Do I need to explain? No. Saving up & working for it 🙂

1080 is still relevant for things I film, so the 4K abilities and image quality on this camera will serve me for quite awhile. That said I just had to send it in for repairs, I feel sick just thinking about it.
It’s not a very good camera anymore - the resolution feels way too low in comparison to the R5 and A7iv. For your style of content the A1 would be a good option, and for budget conscious folks the A7iv rigged with an external battery to prevent overheating.
Hey Peter, Your video is timely. Just got one off Ebay for $2600 and still in mint condition so I can’t wait to shoot with it. What’s your next cam? A1 or wait for the A7R5?
@@PeterLindgren1, well I currently own the A74 and while it allows cropping, oversampled crisp 7K to 4K, and a lower dual ISO, the banding in lowlight, rolling shutter, and 4k60 crop makes it less desirable. For video, hands down it’s either the A7S3 or FX3 until Sony comes out with a higher resolution and flip out LCD screen, it would be a worthy upgrade. Love your content collaborating with other YT’ers like Peter M. and Gerald U.
I am pretty sure a7sIII will be relevant till 4k resolution don't die... and 4k will be relevant for up to 30 inches in next 15 years... so a7sIII is more than great. I don't know what a monster a7sIV will be. Maybe 4k 1000fps..? 8k 120fps.. 4k 120fps 12bit? And fixed focus breathing in bad light conditions..? And maybe 3rd base iso? What do you think Peter?
Love this camera and people love videos and images I took with it. It could have 24mp but 12 is ok if you ate not doing prints. Besides video, Raw files themseles fills camera fast
Peter, IMHO improving yourself from this point is about skills, not about technical stuff. Ideas, storytelling - this kind of stuff. Wanna smth new in gear? Improve your FPV skills ))
In your mind -- what would tempt you to leave the camera for the next best thing? 8k? 240fps? What do you think is on the horizon that's going to make everyone want to upgrade?
@@PeterLindgren1 That would be revolutionary if it were built in variable ND with IBIS. There are very few cameras with ND and IBIS generally unless they have a small sensor.

I got the s3 and 7iv within a couple months of each other and I love the 7iv way more even though it doesn’t have 240fps but it’s just way more intuitive for me and can still do the same 10bit and the ISO is still pretty good. Been having a lot of fun with it so I sold the s3 because I could justify the $5000 price tag. Also, the battery drained so quickly. I just didn’t like the s3 and it felt unrefined.
So reluctant to buy the A7SIII or FX3 as I suspect the next generation is coming next year. Imagine 6k with built in VND with IBIS. One can dream... Of course Sony being Sony they will have two 6k models, one with built in VND and no IBIS and the other with IBIS but no VND. Sigh.
I've been really enjoying the A7iv - it's not got enough frame rates at 4k but I find that to be mostly okay. The best thing about having it, is that I am building a collection of Sony glass and so maybe when the FX3 mk 2 or A7S4 comes, I will be in a good position to take advantage of it.
@@LouiDali It's kinda tricky, though. Unless it's like LOOOWWWWWW light, I feel like A7 IV generally wins at normal low light because it's cleaner until 12800.

I just got one used for 2800 from B&H. Feels like I got a solid deal for my first camera!

The FX3 with the new update allows you to use custom luts. That makes it really tempted if you are in the market for an additional a7sIII.

I never got to own the a7siii since I wanted also a high MP count. The a7iv hit all the spots for me.

You briefly mention shooting most of your content for your channel and client s on the Sony. Could you go into more detail of client work, types of work, how you get that work and how it fits into your business model?

you should try the fuji cameras for photography or even for some videos , that would be something very different from your sony
Gigapixel ai has a crop feature. Definitely worth a try

Used the a7siii on a huge client event for taking photos.... If you know what you are doing.... The pictures will turn out great. I love being able to use the view finder. But yes if you have to crop.... Don't print it 😂😆 but you can upscale anyways so that doesn't even matter now!!!! 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽

I currently shoot with an older Xt3 and im looking to upgrade. Im trying to decide between 2 full frame cameras. The new Lumix s5iix or the older Sony A7siii.
My use case is video only and im currently focused on realestate videos and some weddings, client work ect.
My main concern is for filming real estate in 4k60. What would look better a7siii 4k60 or the lumix s5ii 4k60 cropped? Most high end videographers in the real estate industry use a7siii. Taking everything into account, noise, low light, Dynamic range, image quality ect which is better.
My goal to get the best quality 4k 60 video.

Very good points about the A7SIII and it's understandable you won't spend another $4K on the FX-3 just for the sake of switching. Me... on the other hand.. who's just getting into the video hardware update after the A7III, I'm getting the FX-3. Do I need to explain? No. Saving up & working for it 🙂

1080 is still relevant for things I film, so the 4K abilities and image quality on this camera will serve me for quite awhile. That said I just had to send it in for repairs, I feel sick just thinking about it.

It’s not a very good camera anymore - the resolution feels way too low in comparison to the R5 and A7iv. For your style of content the A1 would be a good option, and for budget conscious folks the A7iv rigged with an external battery to prevent overheating.

@@PeterLindgren1, well I currently own the A74 and while it allows cropping, oversampled crisp 7K to 4K, and a lower dual ISO, the banding in lowlight, rolling shutter, and 4k60 crop makes it less desirable.
For video, hands down it’s either the A7S3 or FX3 until Sony comes out with a higher resolution and flip out LCD screen, it would be a worthy upgrade.

I am pretty sure a7sIII will be relevant till 4k resolution don't die... and 4k will be relevant for up to 30 inches in next 15 years... so a7sIII is more than great. I don't know what a monster a7sIV will be. Maybe 4k 1000fps..? 8k 120fps.. 4k 120fps 12bit? And fixed focus breathing in bad light conditions..? And maybe 3rd base iso? What do you think Peter?

Love this camera and people love videos and images I took with it. It could have 24mp but 12 is ok if you ate not doing prints. Besides video, Raw files themseles fills camera fast
You can easily print 16 x 20 on this camera with minimal cropping
On the Sony A7S III can you film to CF EXPRESS A and SDXC same time?
Peter, IMHO improving yourself from this point is about skills, not about technical stuff. Ideas, storytelling - this kind of stuff. Wanna smth new in gear? Improve your FPV skills ))

In my personal opinion it’s Internal ND filters on a Full Frame camera!
@@PeterLindgren1 That would be revolutionary if it were built in variable ND with IBIS. There are very few cameras with ND and IBIS generally unless they have a small sensor.
I feel like the only camera that could do better than the a7s III would be the Sony A1. Similar video specs but better resolution for photography

Variety is the spice of life right? Makes sense that even with an excellent camera, after using it for 10,000 hours it’d be fun to try something else.

I got the s3 and 7iv within a couple months of each other and I love the 7iv way more even though it doesn’t have 240fps but it’s just way more intuitive for me and can still do the same 10bit and the ISO is still pretty good. Been having a lot of fun with it so I sold the s3 because I could justify the $5000 price tag. Also, the battery drained so quickly. I just didn’t like the s3 and it felt unrefined.
A7IV seems solid! I’ve never had an issue with the battery time on my S3 though 😮
@@PeterLindgren1 Me either. Battery is solid on the a7Siii but I recently added a USB-C battery bank to my rig and now I can shoot all day!
So reluctant to buy the A7SIII or FX3 as I suspect the next generation is coming next year.
Imagine 6k with built in VND with IBIS. One can dream... Of course Sony being Sony they will have two 6k models, one with built in VND and no IBIS and the other with IBIS but no VND. Sigh.

I've been really enjoying the A7iv - it's not got enough frame rates at 4k but I find that to be mostly okay. The best thing about having it, is that I am building a collection of Sony glass and so maybe when the FX3 mk 2 or A7S4 comes, I will be in a good position to take advantage of it.
Also using the A7IV, only downside i see is low light video, cant rly compare to the a7s3 quality. But other than that it's really good
@@LouiDali It's kinda tricky, though. Unless it's like LOOOWWWWWW light, I feel like A7 IV generally wins at normal low light because it's cleaner until 12800.
