There's footage of him and James arguing about what he wrote vs what Bob wanted. No shade, it launched them into the stratosphere, but the honesty of songwriting in the previous albums is undeniable. When left to their own devices (Death Magnetic and Hardwired) they reverted back to longer songs.

it's those guitar harmonies after the second chorus, where you think it's building up to a solo but it's actually building up to fake you out with a whole new guitar riff 16 measures before the solo even takes off. and then the solo takes off, and then there's the incredible unified riff after it, and then he sings "myself is after me..." and then that laugh! I love this song so much.

I met the band in their fanclub meet & greet back in 2009 in Helsinki and asked James when they were finally going to play Frayed Ends of Sanity live. He joked around saying they would save it until they are in their 80s :) Luckily five years later we were able to vote for the song and got to see it live for the first time. Thankfully my fellow Finns also voted for it, because the voted songs in a bunch of other countries were really lame picks like "Enter Sandman" or "Seek and Destroy" as if those songs weren't already on the setlist in most shows anyway.
I'll thank all the Finns eternally for being the only nation that stayed true to the culture and requested this almighty masterpiece to be executed live. As of now, we all have a possibility to watch videos of this performance on RUclips, which means that vote eventually turned into a truly undescribable feat.
The whole request tour was a massive flop. Too many countries picking the same old stuff we've heard a million times before. I think even the band wasn't happy with the results, probably expecting more obscure stuff.
To live is to die, a tribute/dedication to Cliff Burton. The way you talk about how Metallica's instruments draw emotions, this song is the absolute best example of that. You can feel the sadness of Cliff's death weighing on the guys. It's a fucking masterpiece hands down

The beginning is the chant from the Wizard of Oz when the witches goons were marching into the castle. The castle represented a “dark and scary” place for Dorothy and crew. A dark a scary place is exactly where the band was when they recorded this song.

Kirk has written so many great and iconic solos. I honestly can't pick a favorite. He inspired me to play guitar. He does these sneaky great things in his solos, like the arpeggio he busts into in "Trapped Under Ice" for example.

I fell in love with that the first time I heard this song. It’s perfectly placed.
I was actually at the And Justice For All tour when this album was released. I can’t wait for the finale! My favorite on the album. I was a late teen at the time, so it resonated a bit! Keep up the great work!
