Nah, Bob Rock convinced them to write shorter songs. They came into the studio with the material and he cut it to shreds. There's footage of him and James arguing about what he wrote vs what Bob wanted. No shade, it launched them into the stratosphere, but the honesty of songwriting in the previous albums is undeniable. When left to their own devices (Death Magnetic and Hardwired) they reverted back to longer songs.

I met the band in their fanclub meet & greet back in 2009 in Helsinki and asked James when they were finally going to play Frayed Ends of Sanity live. He joked around saying they would save it until they are in their 80s :) Luckily five years later we were able to vote for the song and got to see it live for the first time. Thankfully my fellow Finns also voted for it, because the voted songs in a bunch of other countries were really lame picks like "Enter Sandman" or "Seek and Destroy" as if those songs weren't already on the setlist in most shows anyway.

To live is to die, a tribute/dedication to Cliff Burton. The way you talk about how Metallica's instruments draw emotions, this song is the absolute best example of that. You can feel the sadness of Cliff's death weighing on the guys. It's a fucking masterpiece hands down

the band doesn’t hate it (Rob actually loves it. It’s one of the first songs of theirs he wanted to learn), it just scares the shit out of them because James even admitted it’s too dark. The beginning is the chant from the Wizard of Oz when the witches goons were marching into the castle. The castle represented a “dark and scary” place for Dorothy and crew. A dark a scary place is exactly where the band was when they recorded this song.
