- I took an overnight capsule hotel ferry to Hokkaido, Japan. I’m going to share what it was like being on the ferry for 20 hour and 35 min. Was it hard? Was it comfortable?
Traveling by overnight capsule hotel ferry is definitely worth experiencing.
An operator of this overnight ferry: Shin Nihonkai Ferry
The route: Tsuruga (Fukui) to Tomakomai (Hokkaido)

My 5th grade class really enjoys your videos. We are able to apply different math concepts such as elapsed time, learn new vocabulary but overall we enjoy learning about Japan through train and bus travel. I really appreciate how your videos have opened up the world of travel to my students. Many are hoping to one day visit Japan. Also, they consider you as great person!
I love these kind of videos. No talking, ambient sounds and the raw experience captured on film with subtitles
Couldn't have said better. same feel.
exactly!
Came for the ferry, stayed for the food
Same👍🏾
You’ll love dancingbacon’s channel as well then
Your videos are all extremely relaxing. Sometimes I have difficulty getting to sleep and these help me calm down. Thank you for posting them.

I’m very impressed by how affordable these meals are. That, plus the affordability of that luxury capsule hotel in Tokyo, are making me strongly consider a visit!
Also consider business hotels like APA or ICI. They're pretty affordable and very good.
In Bulgaria you can live 5 days with that money :)
It's so weird that there's nobody there. It's like a post-apocalyptic movie in which the people are gone but the machines keep running.
I noticed that too. I think he travels a lot in the 'off season'. Cheaper rates and not many people. Not sure what 'in season' is.
@hariskhufet That's a darn good guess. I'd with that 😃
I was going to ask why all his videos seems like there's no one else there too. Also, this is a cultural thing probably, but as a woman in the US I could totally capsule hotel, but with a *door*...a curtain? I don't think I'd sleep well. But then again, nobody else is there. 😎
@@MsTaoist I vaguely remember reading/hearing that the rooms containing the capsules are gender segregated, so you wouldn't have to worry about some creeper creeping in. I think that was in the context of a capsule hotel in which the floors were gender segregated.
Anyway, my understanding is that it wouldn't be quite as weird as just sleeping under a blanket in a massive co-ed bunkhouse.
I was just thinking that! We rarely, if not never, see anyone else.
Immaculately clean, crisp and perfect conditions aboard ship.
The vessel looks to be in 100% perfect condition, and an absolute joy to travel on. Subscribed.
I took the ferry from Tokyo to Tokushima to start my 88 Temples pilgrimage. It was a lovely experience and cheaper than the train, including the capsule sleeping compartment. I hope to do this one soon, now that you have shown me how wonderful it is. いつも お世話になって、ありがとうございました!
Wow. That's a great way to start 88 Temples pilgrimage! Thanks for watching. ありがとうございます
I had no idea of this pilgrimage. Thanks for mentioning it. I looked it up and it sounds great! I bet it was a wonderful experience.
From Australia, thank you so much for the video. We can not travel easily now but your video is filling the void.☺
I’m glad to hear that! Thank you for watching! Ta
I did this many years ago leaving from Maizuru. I originally purchased the cheapest fair to sleep in a communal room on the floor however I soon realised that I would be more comfortable spending a little extra for dorm room and upgraded before we left the port. I travelled from Osaka and boarded the ferry at 1am so I had to walk solo about 2km at midnight from the bus station to the port. We arrived in Otaru during a snow blizzard just before midnight 20 hours later. My favourite part of the ferry was the small Onsen they had onboard. I was travelling cheap so I remember I sacrificed eating for sleep and didn’t enjoy the food aside from some boiled eggs and a tea! Great way to travel for anyone looking for a different way to arrive other than by plane or train.
Thanks!
Thanks for the super thanks!
The food looks extremely amazing. It seems like a serene way to travel.
It is, as long as the weather is OK :-)
I’ve become addicted to your travel videos! Helps me escape the isolation of the Pandemic. Many thanks! Also the food looks great!!!
seems like a good way to travel in your downtime. sleep and relax on the boat to prepare for doing stuff at the destination.
i've never seen a capsule ferry before but this looks like an awesome experience when i visit japan again!
Had a fun trip without leaving my room. Hope someday I could taste the food and smell the air just by watching as well! 🌸
I would definitely try the capsule ferries. Everything looks so clean.
I like all the "lol" and "hahaha", feel like chatting with a friend =) the ferry seems very comfortable! Thank you for sharing.
The movie playing in the entrance is Alfred Hitchcock’s _Torn Curtain._ Coincidentally, it’s at the beginning of the movie-a young couple is sharing a cabin aboard a ship.
My best friend and i have been planning a trip to Japan. after we found this channel a few weeks ago, we have decided to start from scratch and travel by ferry at night while enjoying a new place during the day.
Thank you again! Chicken curry this time ;) I used to think a capsule berth would be too claustrophobic, but I've seen enough of the ones you show us now to consider using one some time
This looks like something every tourist should try. I want to!
Absolutely, love you're videos!. If it's possible, could you show the buffet?
Miss everything about Japan! I am a mainland Chinese living in Australia, but I cannot say enough how much we open-minded Chinese love and admire Japan...
I just found your videos by accident. I am hooked. This would be such a lovely way to travel in Japan.
I would love to try this, in the USA where I am from we don’t have anything like this. I’m from New York just south of Buffalo with Lake Erie on my doorstep and this would be awesome.
I really love how you do your videos. There is no chaotic narrative as is often the case with many vlogs, but it's still entertaining and informative. The way you do it lets the experience speak for itself and allows me to enjoy what you're showing, and definitely encouraging me to try experiencing it for myself in the future! Keep up the great work! 👍
I didn't realize it, but this the first ferry I've watched you take that travels along the western coastline of Japan :)
I had no idea you could around Japan by long distance ferries. I have ridden ferries a lot in Canada but not this nice. When I have traveled in Japan I have used the trains a lot but this looks nicer. Only trouble seems to the lack of English signs or menus. The great thing about JR trains is how easy it is for foreign travellers to use them. This looks more challenging.
I like your video style very much. It is relaxing just like the voyage on the ferry boat
Looks so lovely and cozy
Apa khabar ray mak 😆 nice to see you here..
Looks more like a cruise ship rather than a ferry😁
This is how sea ferries are, not just in Japan but all over the world.
@@greggross8856 how ferries differs from cruise ships?
@@shailenlshrestha in my country ferries are much smaller than this, no rooms/beds for sleeping in, no restaurant only a cafe to buy some snacks and drinks, and all seating passengers. Ship this huge is just a cruise ship in my country 😄
@@shailenlshrestha Cruise ships can't carry cars, trucks, buses and heavy equipment. Ferries also such vehcles to drive on and off the ship. And it still has room for passengers, including cabins, restaurants and other amenities.
@@shailenlshrestha cruise ships are the main part of your vacation, ferries are a form of travel. The cruise is your holiday, while you take a ferry to get to your holiday
Been watching a couple of your videos and I'm hooked. No talking and just an overall great channel for showing your travel journey.
Weirds me out to see you depart at nighttime and the ship looks practically empty. Must be a surreal feeling walking the hallways and there's barely anyone there
There is something to be said for taking the slower path. You don't need to fly everywhere. I truly enjoy your videos. I can live vicariously through your eyes since I am disabled and can't go anywhere.
Great video great sound i never knew these ships were like this im glad i watched this thanks for the education
Why would anyone give thumbs down. Thumbs up 100 times. I'm new to your channel...Love it!!!!
I can't stop watching, makes me want to go to Japan. Thank you for the videos :)
I know it’s been said but I just love how everything is clean and neat , after living in London all my life it’s very refreshing to watch this
Ok, I am now completely addicted to your videos. So relaxing.
Looks so clean and modern and not crowded. So nice. I should try this one day.
Love watching your videos! I miss Japan so much. I was there in 1987-88 as an entertainer from Hawaii. We were at Irako View Hotel, love the country side. Got to go to other prefectures and Tokyo was a busy place as always. In Japan there's so much to do, see ,learn and eat. I just loved the food so much. I was there for 6 months. The best time of my life was spent there.
They did a beautiful job renovating the ship. It's gorgeous.
Wow.... fantastic Video! Thumbs up and greetings
Congrats on all the success with the channel. The content is a bit ASMR, Travel, food reviews and economics.
Thank you and keep up the amazing work
Great, this traveling with this ship was famous, I like it, well done. All the best for your next trips, be careful
Your videos are very enjoyable. I can't wait until I can come back to Japan and show my wife your awesome country.
I love these videos so much. Only in Japan can you have such nice facilities. In the West (NA, europe, etc.) everything would be dirty, run down, etc. because people here are so low class. Amazing how many amazing overnight ferries, trains, and buses you have there, I would love to spend a year doing exactly what you do!
I love travelling in general but I am most excited to either go by train or by ferry, it always was. I guess it's the departure (and a little part the arrival) for me, especially at night. It's a certain mood...
Same.
The coolest travel video I have ever watched. And since I love the ocean, I love watching ferry cruises videos.
I love to watch your channel!!!Watch every Video you show on RUclips!!!It is real comfort and realcation for me!!!Great hug from Lukss,Germany,NRW
It looks so empty and lonely, like this movie Passengers, where one man awakes 90 years too early on a spaceship… 😀👍
Doesn't look lonely to me it looks perfect! This is the cruise for me.
Hopefully Japan recovers from covid quickly so that the ferry can be filled up again
It looks so much more confortable compared to it being full.
@@nancypollard4531 i do, i prefer this trip. Its okay to feel lonely.
@@nancypollard4531 me too!
as someone who is way to anxious to travel, watching things like this seem to peaceful and nice
I've never been on a cruise ship or a ferry, so I live vicariously through your videos and the food looks delicious! I'm amazed at the capsules on some of the ferries. Love how you let us hear how crunchy the chicken was!!
Greetings from California, USA 🇺🇸. With the increasing cases of COVID-19 and the Delta Variants, stay safe and healthy everyone!
I've been to Japan a few years ago. Japan is a very beautiful country and I would love to visit again!
Thanks for sharing your experience with us! 😀
I really enjoy these quiet yet informative excursions 🙂👍🏾
There are four things I want to do when I go to Japan if I make it through the pandemic: (1) visit all the stationery shops in Tokyo (2) Climb Mount Fuji (3) Go to an Onsen in every place I visit and (4) travel all over the place on these awesome ferries. Thanks Solo Travel Japan for your great videos--they inspire me and gave me my number 4 thing to do!
Stay safe and healthy!
Beautiful sunrises these videos are such a delight thanks
Thank you for taking us on another trip! Can't wait to try it myself hehe.
Your editing and camera work is excellent. It always seems like you are the only one on the ferry👍🌸🌸🌸💮
I'm grateful you took us with you🙏💕💕💕
It would be great to see other passengers on this ship seeing how others enjoying the overnight ferry. The ship looks beautiful and seamless going thru the water. I would try it if I ever in Japan. Thanks for sharing.
Covid
Have just watched my second video of yours and once again very enjoyable
This looks relaxing and fun as well! Love to see all the sections of the ship and. the food also looks well prepared. Thank you!!
the make your own bed thing is actually quite genious....
not only does it save time and money not having to make a few hundred beds
but it gives the customer peace of mind that the sheets are fresh because THERE THEY ARE
you know they didnt just remake the slept in bed cause the clean sheets are there ready to go
You are doing a Excellent Job by this kind of Fantastic Videos . Hokkaido is a Very favorite and attractive destination of Many . With this Video ,Our Minds goes back to our Fine days in Hokkaido Island ,Recalling so many fine places in Sapporo city and in entire Hokkaido Island .Thanks again .
It’s so relaxing to watch your videos. My bucket list: ride ferries all over Japan.
I’m 5’7” so it’s nice to know I’m perfectly sized for a ferry capsule!
Though having watched a bunch of your videos lately I’m not sure how people make up those beds. I’d probably just spread the sheet out and think good enough
I have been watching your videos all day today. As someone who hopes to travel to Japan soon, learning about these very cheap modes of transport between the cities is a big help! I am also glad to see that although I have been learning Japanese for 18 months there would be enough English to help me for when I get lost haha.
I greatly appreciate it! ありがとうございます!
I love your videos! They are always relaxing and calm. Thank you!
Nice shot of the moon over the Ferry, enjoyed the video. Thanks.
What a wonderful way to travel to Hokkaido. Hopefully I get a chance to do this after the pandemic ends. I love that there's no people around. It's very calming ❤️.
Your videos are calming, much appreciated.
Thank you very much, Solo Travel Japan. I am a huge fan. I have watched your videos. It makes me happy. Hopefully, when the pandemic is over, I will visit Japan again.
Amazing video as always! I always put your video on play when I'm doing my work as it feels like I'm 'traveling' when I'm working, making me more relaxed.
I would definitely enjoy the view with a cup of milk tea and a good book. It's so calm and relaxing
Thank you for a great video. Lots of useful information. Please keep up the good work!!
Every time I watch his video, I carefully pay the attention to read his native English and memorize it for next chance to speak English.
I look forward to watching next adventure. Keep up good work.
That is great to hear! But keep in mind that he isn’t a native english speaker, so there are a few minor mistakes
That's really cool. You explain the layout and the options. Thank you. Although I think I'll stick to a cabin next time. Lol
How did I miss this video?
So sorry.
I will enjoy it now.
Thank you.
💕 being your travel companion.
✌❤🤘
Love your channel so much, constantly find myself talking to the screen. So relaxing and fun to watch, especially during hard times really lifts me up. So happy I discovered it ❤️
This looks like a very peaceful journey! Thank you for sharing.
Three videos in and I am hooked [and subscribed!]. I love this kind of video content. It's so calm and relaxing to just hear the ambient sounds and read the subtitles, rather than listen to a near-constant and/or frantic narration plus music [aaarrgh]. I also learned a lot about 'how things are done in Japan' in the three videos I have watched thus far.
You should seriously have millions of subscribers. Keep up the great work!
Great trip report! I'd make this trip every weekend. It'd be so relaxing.
Thanks for the compliment!
Your ferries and trains are so much nicer than the US :)
Very nice video. I feel relaxed having watched it. Quite pleasant. Thank you!
From Venezuela - Love your material , and i woud enjoy Very much to expirience the ferry travel . Thanks a lot .
Thank you.
Great video. The ship looks interesting, I would try it. Also, the coffee looked amazing. I hope it tasted half as good as it looked.
These videos are great. Seems very relaxing to just travel from place to place. Thank you for making these!
Thank you for your excellent videos! In these difficult times of the pandemic and stressful politics, it is so nice to watch such a nice voyage. I find your video editing, composition, and chronological focus quite calming and very relaxing to watch. I hope I can get to Japan at some future time and ride a ferry myself! Now I know what to expect!
I love your videos and cannot wait to be able to visit your beautiful country one day!
Fantastic video, I never went on a long distance ferry when I was in Japan. I'm thinking of taking an overnight ferry to the Scottish isles. It won't be as luxurious as the ferry in your video but it has me looking forward to it!
楽しみね!
I was on a car ferry in 2006 - Copenhagen to Oslo and back yet enjoyed it. Make sure you take dramamine tablets. I am autistic also.
For those who are still reading this, I'm just about to board the ferry for Lerwick, Scotland ;)
It’s a brilliant channel. I like this calm.
Just want to say your video is very nice! You give me new insights about transportation in japan and added small trivia too! Really appreciate it ☺️
I appreciate your kind words! Thank you!
Always a great day to watch your videos.
Your videos always relax me.
I wish I could visit. Seems peaceful to travel alone there.
There's something magically comforting but surreal about ferries 💖
Mag Dinge in der japanischen Kultur. Stilvoll, drängen sich selten jemanden so auf ... wie ich es gerade hier erleben muss ... uem.
Well that looked like a lot of fun. The food looked so delicious. It looked like you pretty much had the whole place to yourself. I'd love to give that a try.
That's the nicest ferry I've ever seen. And it looks like you practically had the whole ship to yourself.
This is actually such good content. I’m loving it
This would definitely be good to try if you are not in a hurry to get to Hokkaido. Obviously flying or taking the train would be faster but this is more luxurious than I expected for capsule rooms. I'm not fond of cruise ships but this and the other ferries you've shown here seem to be more enticing to be on, all the necessities (room, food, lounges, outside decks) without all the other bells and whistles. Thank you for showing these videos, it's a side of Japanese travel I wasn't aware of before.
