  • Robert Kegan's theory of adult meaning-making has influenced theory and practice internationally across multiple disciplines. In a special RSA event, he considers: is it really possible to grow beyond the psychological independence of the "self-authoring mind," so often seen as the zenith of adult development?

    The order of adult development is clarified even more with Kegan addressing the stages. His examples are helpful and ingrain a valuable understanding of his "Theory of Adult Development."

    View A: What this focuses on; that people continue to grow mentally through there life and enter new phases of perspective even as far as middle age and on. The with age comes a change in perspective, new and potentially revolutionary ideas.
    View B: Many revolutionaries had their big ideas when they were still very young (pre-30) and so this age is the catalyst for revolutionaries. A phase of balance between curiosity, risk-taking and new understanding. Then as we age our impact decreases.

    It's a bit of a romantic theory - that this fourth order is a communal biological response that is natural for this stage in our sentient development. You can search for meaning too hard. One might just as easily suggest that those past middle age aren't quite so passionate about their internal ideologies as they have less time left and want to live and let live. I don't see much indication that this age group (why is it so strictly tied to middle age anyway?) are vigorously improving the world.

    • @DarkMoonDroid

      He's not saying that people that age are working on this problem. He's saying that people don't start working on this problem until after they pass that age. Big difference. Not all Middle-Aged People are able to change who they are in order to save the world.

  • @Dixavd
    @Dixavd 11 лет назад +1

    Obviously there are more views. But I tried to succinctly explain the distinction between them. I personally think that there is less of a significance of age and the states of mind that both views have an affinity for can occur at almost any age with different people.

    This feels like Erickson’s 8 Stages of Psychosocial Development
    combined with the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, with some additional assertions about the 5th order that don't really seem to be founded in any clear scientific basis. Not sure if I'm not seeing something here?

  • @Dixavd
    @Dixavd 11 лет назад +1

    It's interesting to bring up the argument of some enlightenment transcendence that occurs late in life when most industries (from the sciences to the economics to the creative arts) have continued to battle with the idea that many people make there revolutionary ideas and perspectives at a young age and in general don't set the world on fire late in life. It is interesting to know that proponents of both views would describe the other with toxicity. Certainly the answer must be a part of both.

  • @jroshau

    I kind of do see them both working. Because we physically can't interact with a large amount of people a day. Only though social media. Hypothetically my vision of the future is large university complex's where people can choose to learn and pursue there passions. It wouldn't be mandatory, but just like education today a certain level would be required. Then people would be able to freely live as desired. Basic needs would be met etc. Family complexes and communities would be the norm.

    Yeah. There is SOME relationship between age, perspective shift and impact. However, I believe that barring emotional impairment, a person can proceed through the phases quite quickly. This is why we have education. It's supposed to train us in how to interact and perceive the world in ways that are effective. Does education accomplish this? That's another subject.
    But I tend to relate these states of mind to stages of development, often triggered by, but not directly relate to age.

    • @DarkMoonDroid

      Education does not cause this kind of development. In fact, anymore, it's holding it back.

    Let me explain adult development. We are only shaped by our traumas if were stupid enough not to understand without emotional bias, judgment, admiration, shame, or personal bias based on influence. Our past makes us who we are; if we dont understand and relate with ourselves in a positive way, how on earth can we expect to understand and relate to others. Trauma is unavoidable, responce to trauma is the only possible way to develop into a good mature adult. Understanding the knowledge you retreive is absolutely important in order for this to occour. Understanding can not be obtained with judgment, personal or emotional bias, shame, admiration, these are the dabilities the human mind faces to this day. Question everything... Understand everything.

    anthropology shows that we have already had the kind of societies that are governed by experience and wisdom, the elder society of tribes. and even today most senior politicians are senior citizens, and no wisdom or post-self-authoring seems to be coming from them. all this goes to show that the structures and institutions of society are crucial to social outcomes, not necessarily how old people are. and btw, most trump voters, fox news viewers and tea party members are senior citizens, which is evidence directly refuting kegan's claims on transcending the self-authoring phase of development as we age.

    I do not foresee these 2 frames of thinking co-existing in the future world and the future demands Global thinking. Hopefully, I'll be able to live for the next 500 years to see it unfold. They just need to hurry up and make the Genome Project medically useful!
