  • This video is about recent research that has been revealing that there is much more to animal, and more specifically fish intelligence than meets the eye. To address this topic I visited the Guia Marine Laboratory and met up with the team from the Behavioural Ecology and Evolution group. They are studying fish intelligence specially through cleaner fish, like wrasses and gobies. Really cool stuff.

What do you think about these cool dudes? I wonder what they could do if they had hands...

I think if fish had hands, they would be the dominant species in the ocean. Imagine a school of fish, but with hands, a bit of a scary thought.

They might never learn smelting, because it's kind of hard to do underwater, but they'd have access to obsidian and a lot of glass bottles, and they'd have found spears and arrows on sunken ships hundreds of years ago. A bow doesn't work well underwater, because the water drags on the limbs, but they'd be pretty good at hunting with spears.
Imagine an octopus wielding a spear tipped with broken glass. "Option 1: camouflage. Option 2: sashimi. Either way, I'm not your lunch."

Thanks for the disclaimer at the start, Maria. Animal testing is not something to be taken lightly.
Given that it's happening in this case, I'm glad the world is discovering what should be obvious, fish feel pain the same as we do, fish are intelligent and social, and this has implications for **all** species (as the researchers pointed out).
All in all, very well done! You really communicated the important points & injected your own awesome sense of humor. ❤U, Maria!! I think this is the right career for you!

The mirror test is so interesting. Marine fish are sooo much smarter than freshwater fish. None of my freshwater fish would ever pass the mirror test. Except for mayyybe my old puffer, Tetraodon schoutedeni. Puffers are really smart in general. Too late to test, sadly. I miss him!

It would be cool if a type of suckermouth catfish like plecostomus evolved a sort of symbiosis with other fish where they use their sucker mouth to clean the fish sort of like freshwater cleaner wrasse and same with freshwater shrimp kind of filling the cleaner shrimp niche in freshwater

I was getting ready to criticize your critical thinking, but I was surprised that you guys, as scientist are thinking quite well! I also noticed that you are all young scientist, so you are probably not influenced by old scientific values derived from religious, narcissistic human traditional inclinations!
Congratulations on your critical thinking! Hope you succeed at understanding intelligence.
