I like the Michael Wood theory, because that's where I grew up. Around the area is Morthen.. Laughton en le Morthern and Brampton en le Morthern. As far as I know there are no archaeological excavations or discoveries, except the name the place still holds. It's just off the Don, and the Rother both leading to the Humber, and site of a Hall belonging to Edwin Earl of Mercia, so I'm going with Morthern (Meaning land of dead )as the site of Brunanburgh

I generally go with any Michael Wood theory purely on the principle that he is the best dressed historian (I am thinking of the 'In search of series in particular). I love a good mystery and I will almost certainnly lose interest as soon as they find the real place. I don't know much about Morthern but the name alone has me hooked :) I will look it up thank you

I thought it might have been on the Scottish boarders. I know a lot of the lowland Scots had Saxon heritage.

I think the legendary Uhtred and Bernard Cornwell, s folk were Angles who intermarried with the locals..

Bernard Cornwell namechecked the wirral archeologists in the latest Uhtred book , which was very nice of him....
