      Thanks! It is GREAT that you are thinking ahead. Start by taking the pre-IB courses required as a part of the program. Talk to a high school counselor about what those are and the best order in which to approach them (this can change school to school even though the IB program is pretty "regulated"). Then start filling in your schedule with some of the electives you need to meet graduation standards (health, art, PE, etc.). Those electives plus your core classes, which is much of what the pre-IB courses will be, will fill up your schedule pretty quickly. Again, talk to a high school counselor as you build your schedule. Draft a list of the classes you want to take each year between now and graduation. Your list may change as you move forward, but having the list now will give you a plan to succeed!

    I don’t know if I should take AP English or just regular English 3. English classes in general stress me out but I know if I take AP I would be somewhat prepared for collage. I am already going to take AP US history and Honors Algebra 2 in my next year which is my junior year. Also I don’t know if if I should take environmental science or AP biology… I would be in sports as well. I just want to have a successful productive ready for college year but I don’t want to be too stressed out trying to juggle all my advanced classes… I’m not sure what to do… T-T

      Our best advice is that you have a face-to-face conversation with your high school counselor. Tell them exactly what you told us. They know your academic record and can help you find the best challenge fit. With that said, remember that colleges like to see you challenge yourself. Many, if not most, would rather see you challenge yourself and earn a lower grade than take an easier class and earn an A. AP classes are a great device to earn college credit in high school AND to see if you handle the coursework well. But they shouldn't stress you out. Challenge, yes. Stress, no. Talk to your current English teacher to ask if they believe the AP class or English 3 would be a better fit. Your teachers and your counselor are paid to help you think these things through. But it is your decision. You should also take classes that help you determine what your future might include. If you are interested in pursuing a college major that would be enhanced by knowing more about environmental science, take that class. It can help you decide if that is a study matter you wish to pursue. The same is true if biology is more in the lines of what you want to investigate. You know your sports schedule and what you are thinking you wish your future to hold. Talk to your teacher and counselor get their advice. Then you can make the best decision for you. You are thinking about the right questions. Bet on yourself. Best wishes!

    • @FromNestToWings
      @FromNestToWings  2 года назад +1

      We are afraid we can't give you a definitive answer. So much of it will depend on the amount of work associated with each class and your capabilities for math. As a rule, we suggest you take the classes in a way that allows you to perform your best. Universities want to see what you are capable of. So, taking difficult classes and taking more than one at a time demonstrates such. However, if you are unable to score well you can undermine your message to admissions officers. Talk to your counselor to get more information on what would work best for you in your school. Good luck!

    • @FromNestToWings
      @FromNestToWings  2 года назад

      Generally, schools will announce a period of time when class registration for the next year will occur. As that announcement is made, you need to go to your teacher and ask their recommendation for the next class or classes they think you are prepared to take. Don't wait for your teacher to come to you...go to them. Let them see that you are invested in your future! If you haven't heard when the class selection time will be, ask! Ask your counselor or any teacher. If you have questions about the recommendation made by your teacher, review the teacher's recommendation and your plans for your future with your counselor.

    If you take an honors class in high school I know you get a gpa boost, so I assume the gpa boost includes the 5 points you get added right? Ex: I get an 82 which is a b- plus the 5 points which would bring my grade up to an 87. Instead of getting 3.2 gpa points from the 82 you get 3.8 from the 87 right????

    • @FromNestToWings
      @FromNestToWings  2 года назад +2

      I am afraid not. The boost in the amount of credit is in the figuring of your GPA, not for the grade in any of those courses. So, it impacts your GPA, not your class grade. As you figure your GPA for honors classes, they9generally) get 5 points for an A, four points for a B. So if you have 4 classes. Two are honors, and two are not. You earn an A in one honors class and a B in the second. You also earn an A in each of the non-honors classes on a four-point scale. To figure your GPA, you will add together a 5 for the honors class with an A. 4 for the honors course with a B. And two more 4's, one for each of the non-honors A. That would give you 17 points (5+4+4+4= 17). Then divide that sum by the number of classes you are taking...in this case, 4. That would give you a GPA of 4.25.
      Again, your course grade stays at 82, which gives you a B. That B would be worth 4 points in the GPA figuring...which would be the same as an A (4 points) in a non-honors class. (A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0.)
      Best wishes!

    Wait but if I want to know what classes to take for a specific job how do I figure that out? Or does high school not matter as long as I pass all the required courses within the 4 years?

    • @FromNestToWings
      @FromNestToWings  2 года назад +1

      If you have a particular field in mind, speak with your high school counselor to find the best classes to help you investigate whether or not that is the right field for you. You also have to make sure you meet the requirements to graduate. If you want to investigate other fields, high school is a great time to do so. Use your electives to figure out if there is another field that might interest you. However, if your high school/school district does not have classes in the field you would like to pursue, the correct answer is to do your best in every class you take. Actually, no matter if you are taking classes in your field or not, you need to do your best. That will allow you much more flexibility as you move on with your education.

    I don't know what to do,
    I want to take an AP psychology class but there is a General Psychology which is half the year so I can all my other graduation requirements a lot better but I don't know if that's better than preparing for college and having a tighter schedule..

    • @FromNestToWings
      @FromNestToWings  Год назад

      You didn't mention your year. If you are a senior, prioritize getting your grad requirements. If you are a junior, sophomore, or freshman and can finish your grad requirements in the time you have left in high school, take AP Psych. We know it feels good to check all those graduation requirements off as soon as possible, but if that keeps you from a great class...it is ok to postpone that checkmark. Sit down with the school class offerings and draft the list of courses you would like to take each semester between now and when you graduate. Leave some room for changes as the school offerings might change. However, if you can see that you can accomplish everything and still spread out your challenging courses while focusing on the topics you would like to pursue in college, that is the best answer. Have your counselor help you with the list, or have them check it after you draft it to ensure you haven't missed any requirements or opportunities. This will be great practice for college when this kind of course planning is essential!
      Best wishes!

    Hi, thank you so much. I have a really big concern about foreign language course requirements. I want to apply to Harvard, which recommends 4 years of language. If I take 3 years of a foreign language (because of scheduling issues) and maybe do the 4th language course over the summer, would I still be able to apply as this is a recommendation and not a requirement?
    Thank you so very much!

    • @FromNestToWings
      @FromNestToWings  Год назад

      It would depend on the level of the summer course. Will it cover the same amount of information as a year-long course? Is that documented (meaning your school can add that to your transcript? If so, make sure the summer course is sometime before your senior year so it is reflected on your transcript before you apply? A better answer may be to take two levels of the language simultaneously. Level one and two or two and three. That way it appears on your transcript and shows your willingness to take on a challenge. You would need to coordinate this with your teachers and the school counselor. Another idea might be to complete the three years and then engage in an extracurricular activity or job that requires you to utilize the language so they can see you have a working knowledge of the language. Harvard has a 5 % acceptance rate, so you must show you take their recommendations seriously. We strongly suggest you call the Harvard admissions office and ask them the same question you asked us. Remember that this is not their only decision point, so your GPA, course selection, and activities still need to be impressive.

I’m planning to take French 1 (10th grade) then French 2 (11th). I will take French 3 over the summer so that I can take a 4th course of French (AP French) my senior year. Do you think that would be a good option? or should I just stick to French 1,2, and 3. We have to take French 3 before AP French at my school. thank you. Good for you testing yourself and taking a challenging class. First, talk to your teacher. Could they suggest things to help you improve your assignments and grade? They may be seeing a theme...or a consistent challenge they have with your projects that you don't see. Ask for them to help you with those areas that need to improve. Second, ask yourself if you are learning in this class. Look beyond the grade. Is your writing getting better? Are your assignments challenging but interesting/educational? Are you better suited for more challenging classes by staying with this course? Can you identify ways you could improve your work? Third, talk to your counselor. Are there other classes you can replace this one with that will help you improve your English skills so you will be prepared for the AP English classes? The grade isn't as important as your willingness to learn and improve. Utilize the insights of the teacher and your counselor! Best wishes!

      Start by looking over the classes your school offers. Make sure you know your options. Then, figure out what classes you need to graduate. There is a list of the requirements, usually that is in the same document on your school's website. Once you know the core classes you need to take, and any electives that are needed for graduation, you can pick your electives. Select classes that interest you or that might be related to what you want to do with your life after education. This is a great chance to test if the field holds your interest. Make sure you pick the most challenging classes that you can. AP, IB, or honors courses are a great way to prepare your study skills for college. Make sure you talk to your high school counselor about all of this. They will help steer you to the courses that work for you and will help you fit your classes into a schedule. You can also speak with teachers who have been helpful throughout your high school career to ask for their perspective. This is a great time to invest in your education and yourself!
