That’s really fascinating today and brought back lots of memories. Thank you both. I used to help my Dad with his bees after my Mum refused to do it any more (got badly stung on the ankle when he dropped a frame) aged 9/10. I am so impressed with your beesuit as there was nothing like that in 1956. I love the hood and would have loved a suit like that. Just had to make sure everything possible was tucked in well. Just smoke too, no sugar and water spray. I had to stand in front of the hive and hold the chambers as my Dad tipped them up, peered underneath and cut out any Queen cells. He always had 4 or 5 chambers on his hives but I see that is no longer practice. After all it was 1956. He kept bees until he was 80 and was warded honorary life membership of the Hampshire Beekeeping Association. Hope you get lots of lovely honey and look forward to seeing you extracting it. 🐝🌻
This vlog was so very wonderful and informative. Colin, you'd be a great one on one (no innuendo) teacher. It was such luck to see you doing this because in NYC a bee keeper had to take a swam in and watching him sweep the bees into a plastic container like you did was special. It is the 'Colin move.' I burp back at you.
Wow. Your delivery alone speaks volumes on the impact bee keeping has on you. I am impressed with your knowledge and how well you actually interact with the bees. Amazing.
This information is very helpful. Youns got big cahoots there is no way I could do this. But thanks because wonderful people like you we can enjoy honey.God bless. Take care and be careful.
I admire your commitment to your bees but I know I would be far too nervous to be a bee keeper. Thank goodness there are folks like you in this world. Best of luck with all your hives.
my husband has always wanted to have bees, me too however I'm not so sure, I would sooner folllow you in your other project, Sherlock. this something i could handle, thanks for sharing as always, and i will watch from afar. stay well stay safe x
I didn’t know much about bees until you started your colony. They have quite a complex and fascinating existence. Thanks for all the educational info you provide ……. Oh yeah and the laughs. Love your outtakes 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂. Take care.
Hi guys, as a young boy about 8 or 10 we had a neighbor farmer with about 10 or more hives in apple pear orchard. They also had 4 kids and I an only child was a play mate. During summer we ran through the orchard and at time ran into a bee here and there. To help cut the sting the mother would mix a solution of baking soda thick and spread it to take down the pain. It worked for us. Good luck!
Have to admit that when you guys left your narrowboat, I was sad. As an American with Scottish ancestry, was thrilled you were going to the Highlands. You both look so genuinely happy and peaceful there and makes me so happy for you both! Been keeping bees abt as long as you and every day they teach me something. Have not had a swarm yet as split alot this year. You handled both brilliantly. I have a hive that is like yours. I wonder if you have an animal that might visit them nocturnally that makes them defensive. Wishing you a wonderful bee season! 💙 🐝
Wonderful, informative vlog yet again. Thank you. I learned a lot today about beekeeping. Never knew how complex it can be. Cheers. Enjoy your weekend ❤🐝
What a great video guy's. It was so interesting and educational. This could be on National Television it was so good. I am so pleased you managed to get the Bees sorted and calmed down in the end. It must be stressful when things are not going right. Love to Otis and Ollie. Keep well and safe. James.
2 year's of beekeeping congratulations Colin doesn't time fly by i tell you what your very brave on getting back the bee's Colin and your facts about the bee's are getting better
Great vlog guy's. I have learnt a lot about bee keeping. Tempted to look into bee keeping myself locally. Take care, stay safe and well. With regards Derek.
Thanks guys for this very interesting vlog, I'm learning stuff about bee keeping with you guys all the time. I hope that you two and the pups are doing well. Take care and all the best. Stevie
Bees are such an amazing creature. I love honey. It is so interesting how honey can taste so different depending on the plant they get nectar from. The bee hives near my home are getting nectar from cranberry bogs and the wildflowers.
As always love your videos especially your hives, looking forward too seeing your Apiary expanding, is Laurence black mountain honey going to join you on a vlog again ? Love Jim
Hi Guys, a great vlog today but I have a question, years (yonks) ago I was told that when a bee stings you it then dies so I have always been very careful not to ever anger a bee into stinging me because I love bees and would not like to think I ever killed one by it stinging me so is this true. I really thought I would miss your adventures in Silver Fox but I like your new Highland life even better and I see that Queen Camilla was tasting different honeys the other day. Yummy. Anyway take care and have a great weekend with all your animals i.e hens and bees and of course the doggies.
Yes, that’s true, but It's only when they sting mammals. Because of their thick skin, the barbs become wedged. In trying to get free, the bee rips away part of its abdomen and internal organs. It's this that causes it to die a few minutes later - while bees don't have blood per se, it essentially bleeds to death.
I'm a bit confused here. So two different hives featured? The new one set up from the swarm on the tree that came from wherever, but it was one of your existing hives where they became angry? Have I got that right?
Thankyou Colin for a most interesting video. . I was very interested as to why the bees where angry ,glad you where able to catch and keep the swarm of bees that you found great keep up the good work 👏 ❤ x
How do the bee's from the existing quieter hive... react to the swarm? do they just start to get along? don't they feel out of place with out their own queen? will they just fly back to their own hive or will there be a fight?
Sat in a friends garden the other day, a large dark swarm flew over us about roof height. Wasps or bees? I don’t know, but the noise was something else. It was like that old B movie from the 70’s …..
Not sure if this is only an American thing but when you buy a dozen doughnuts over here some bakeries toss in a 13th for free and call it a "Baker's Dozen". Do you know what it is called when you buy a dozen bees and they add in the 13th one without charging for it? That there is a freebie!
Very nice. Any plans to replace the original hive lids with the new gable type lid? If your bee colonies continue to grow, have you planned how many you will be able to comfortably keep?
I’m actually not keen on the Gabled roof because it’s less strong for fastening down. If anything, I might change them for a flat roof. Big announcement on more hives soon
I once had a dozen or so bee stings at the same time (walked into a swarm). Apart from the pain not a problem. A few years later I had one sting and immediately went into anaphylactic shock. Take care.
Awesome!! How do you not run scared, round like your arse is on fire 🤷🏻♀️,but then, you being calm with them is very soothing to watch xx can’t wait for next bed story xx
back when you posted about this on social media, you said something (IIRC) that you weren't entirely sure where they'd come from, and thinking about it I think it must have been reference to what you said here about not being sure about whether it was one of your colonies that had swarmed again. But it does bring up a point that I was wondering about. What is the, um, protocol with regard to swarms, i know that if you get a swarm in your garden or something you're meant to call the local beekeeper, but what if the person you call isn't the person whose hives they swarmed from in the first place, I mean I suppose the local beekeper goes about collecting them and getting them safe even if its not a swarm from their hives anyway (as you did) but what if some person turns up claiming that they swarmed from their hives? is it a case of finders keepers and clear orf? Or does negotatiation happen? Do different keepers put different colour spots on the queens? (its a fascinating topic!). I know you said that these weren't from your hives but do you know where they did come from? I assume there is a max distance that a swarm can travel? (might actually google that one...) - maybe you could save these questions for a follow up video...! Thanks in advance!
So good to see you. The bees look good. It’s very wet and cold in Cape Town (winter). I have news for you I am going to be i nanna in November she will be coming in the world. Bless us all have i good weekend all🙏🏻🙏🏻🕊🕊🌻🌻
If the colonies keep splitting up to a point where you'd need more hives than your estate can support, do you just put the word out in the bee-keeping community and someone will come and take them off your hands?
You didn't want to say to much about your Government . But you should be over the pond here in the U.S. and see / hear all this damn mess . Very interesting about the bee's !
Really enjoyed this very informative and pleasant vlog! Went on an Ag-Art Tour in our county last week which featured a bee farm (not sure it that's the correct term). Other than collecting and selling the honey, these folks actually rent their hives out to local farmers to pollinate their crops (watermelons this month). Bees are fascinating critters! And I thought this would be the first vlog in which Shaun wouldn't declare "You can't say that!" but you teased us all and saved it for the outtakes at the end. Love you guys and pats for the pups! Cheers from South Carolina!
Wow really enjoyed the vlog.colin you brilliant explaining about the bee's which educational. It's lovely because you explain in the finest detail.Have a lovely weekend all of you.❤️❤️🦴🦴
Is it just me - thought you checked the wrong hive at the end - flat roofed not gabled?? What a busy bee you were putting the new hive together - didn't take you long. Super vlog thanks guys.

It is so interesting to find out more information about bees. I love the way you tell everyone, fun but informative!
Colin your very knowledgeable about queen's 😂😂😂😂😂😂❤❤

I love your thirst for knowledge, you soak it up and put it in layman’s terms, for some of us who don’t have a clue. Love it.
Wow. Your delivery alone speaks volumes on the impact bee keeping has on you. I am impressed with your knowledge and how well you actually interact with the bees. Amazing.

Colin @ 0:34....."new bee" !! Ha ha....Good one!!
Have you researched about using bee stings for chronic joint pain? It was popular here in the states several years ago.
No. We don’t suffer from chronic joint pain.
my husband has always wanted to have bees, me too however I'm not so sure, I would sooner folllow you in your other project, Sherlock. this something i could handle, thanks for sharing as always, and i will watch from afar. stay well stay safe x

I am enjoying watching the bee videos something I’ve always wanted to try but I’m allergic. Keep up the good work!!
Wow! Glad that hive settled down, and their queen is ok!
Great that I am learning more and more about bees! Thank you host Colin and cameraman Shaun 😄

Cool video! Love seeing all the bee antics.
Good to see you guys, glorious weather 😊, are you creating the hives yourself or buying a kit?
It’s easier, faster and cheaper to buy ready to build kits.
Lovely, thankyou for getting back to me, really looking into getting our own thanks to you guys you’ve got is really interested 😊
❤ I’m so proud of you both taking all this on. It must be so exciting.😊

Hi boys and animals, what a great vlog very entertaining as normal. Just love watching you guys. Have great week. 😊

Very interesting. You sure a dedicated to their care. They are lucky. 🐝
You're both so wonderful. I wish I could support a hive and buy some of Shawn's eggs. LOVE your channel.
Such a calming episode

G'day, Thanks for the vid, loved hearing about the bees and finding out what happened to the swarm you found. Take Care
do you plant wild flowers somewhere on your property to help out the bees?
We do 👍🏻

Do you know what it is called when you buy a dozen bees and they add in the 13th one without charging for it?
That there is a freebie!
It's an English Medieval phrase used when traders would be scared of a beating if they undersold, so added extra to avoid violence. x
Very interesting and great to see our hive as well, thank you :)
Yours is on a lot more next week!

I wonder if perhaps a Hornet had got in and they'd gone into full defence mode. Great video as always, much love, Chas :0)
We don’t have hornets
Thanks for the educational entertainment. Hope your new hive works out well. I could not do that. Too many buzzing around. Please be careful.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge of bee keeping
My pleasure
This was really neat, love how kind you are to the bees 🐝🍯❤️
Thanks so much 😊
This was so interesting! Thank you for sharing!

There’s no protocol to call the local beekeeper. It’s a very individual thing. Most of the time there’s no idea where they came from.
@@FoxesAfloat interesting! Them what told me that must have had no idea what they were on about then.... !!! And no, they weren't beekeepers!
Really enjoyed this Vlog and learnt lots! Thank you 🙂
Very impressive stuff - I’m not sure id be brave enough to look after bees but love what you are doing :)
Thank you very much!
Colin your brilliant., well done ✅
That was really interesting - thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!

Congratulations xxx
It's a good news about the number bees. I do try and have plants in my garden that are bee friendly.
Won’t it be good when you can spot a queen? Straight off, no messing. Never stop learning do we, way to go…..keeps you young.
If the colonies keep splitting up to a point where you'd need more hives than your estate can support, do you just put the word out in the bee-keeping community and someone will come and take them off your hands?
No. That’s a story for a few weeks time 😉
Jeepers Colin, I would run a mile away from the swarm let alone that angry hive. Another great video guys 👍
Thanks 🙏🏻
Great video learning a lot about 🐝 bees . Thanks.
👍🐝🐝🌻🇨🇦🇨🇦
Our pleasure!
Finders, beekeepers!
So interesting thank you both 😊 ☺️ 🐝
Our pleasure!
Doesnt the queen catcher keep them in the hive? 🧐
The queen doesn’t love in a queen catcher. Otherwise, how would she lay eggs?
@@FoxesAfloat that mesh grill you put on during the winter to stop queen escaping?
@@danb2450 That's a queen excluder, not a catcher. It prevents her accessing the 'Super' frames, not from exiting the brood box.

Let's not do politics. Just bees. x
Really interesting, a friend of mine is keeping bees. Fascinating creatures. Would love to but think I would find it too stressful😂😂

Do wasps ever join the bee colony or are wasps a completely different thing?
Totally different. It would be like the USA trying move into Russia 🤣
They are predators to bees.
Love your content lads nice to see ya both good 👌👌👌

Interesting content 👍

an amazing vlog, thank you. areyou able to send honey to West Yorkshire
Not yet, but maybe soon.
Now I want to become a bee keeper, but here you cannot have hives in the city

Wow!
I’ve learned so much Bee 101 information thru your expenses. Just fascinating.

Thanks again guys. Hmm. Maybe the bees had been spooked by a hornet or something. Who knows eh?

The vlog was about two different hives. A new swarm and an existing colony.
😊
