This is a good place to think about Charlie. People who "get it" drop by here-- especially guitar players who listen to drummers. He was my favorite. I was a teenager when the Beatles and Stones broke -- so this feels like a death in the family and that's no exaggeration.
My very first favorite Stones song. I used to dance like a wild child to it when my aunts or uncles put the "Hot Rocks" double lp on. I love the whole collection, but if this song or the Beatles "Twist and Shout" was played, I turned into a whirling dervish. Charlie is my Darling. Remember, he's not Mick's drummer, Mick is his singer.
Yer a Stones fan? Never knew. :) On another note, the Rolling Stones website did Charlie good. The home page is just Charlie, no links, nothing. Just a beautiful photo of him. Beato did a nice video of him too, as he typically does. Anyway, I think we're all in the same boat in missing him. Another heavy-hitter joined the phenomenal concert goin' on out there.
He can’t be replaced. It’s over. Charlie leaves behind the biggest legacy/body of work in modern music, pop, rock history. It’s perfection from day one till the end. God Bless
I agree with the sentiment, but they replaced him before he died. They were going to tour without him, and it’s not like they’re releasing new studio albums every two years.
@@jamesjames9275 So I decided to dust off my vintage “Swingin’ Pig” 2 CD 1969 Hyde Park set and really give Charlie a good listen. The show was largely an all over the place mess-missing guitar cues even in simple songs like ..’Jack Flash’..., vocal cues... (some flashes of greatness as well). Amazing how Charlie (and Bill, of course) wrestled and fought and kept the entire show from dropping right off the cliff. But Charlie did it so seamlessly you almost don’t notice it. Tempo way too fast, too slow, missed cues, extra bars added to songs, he adjusts flawlessly, like tossing a lasso around the unruly group of musicians, drags em all back together. Hyde Park also showcases his unique ability to stand out with some flash and bang on really slow songs, because most of the songs were played dreadfully S-L-O-W (Satisfaction of course was way fast). His use of high-hat is magic. He was up front, in your face, but never in the way. True legend.
you make it seem he was fired and they just cold heartedly decided to go on without him..geez..the tour was planned,he got sick, and the found a great back up ,they thought hed comeback ,but sadly he didnt make it.. someone filled in he was never replaced give him respect@jamesjames9275
So sad he passed. A friend of mine knew the stones well,, and went out with Brian Jones Thank you so much for this. The Stones are amazing, but I wish the songs were in standard tuning.
John Hiatt song Slow Turning - "I'm yelling at the kids in the back 'cause they're banging like Charlie Watts". Always made me smile. Excellent lesson, as always.
Great choice of songs to honor Charlie, JJ. His drums really help make this song. I saw the Stones in 95 on the Voodoo Lounge tour. Charlie received one of the loudest and longest applauses when band members were introduced. He was outstanding in that concert as well. Love the Some Girls shirt👍
Yes sad news about Charlie and it makes me feel more mortal being born in 1962. That of course is why I like your channel as we have similar music taste
My favorite Stones Stones tune, I was 15 when this song hit the Radio. I love Get Off Of My Cloud because of Charlie's great talent on the drums. And that's what sticks in my head, is that Charlie Watts beat, what a loss to everyone who loved Charlie and The Stones. RIP Mr Charlie Watts.
Charlie's stellar intro and hook line snare fills- so musical. Diesel drumming. We'll still be on the carousel when Charlie's laughing in his grave. ♥♫
Can't forget Mick Taylor's outstanding solo and also can't forget that Bill is really kicking back there on the bass. And excellent performance by them.
the first time i saw the stones [of 5 times] was back in the 80's in los angeles at the coliseum and when i got home everyone ask me what i thought of them . the first thing i told them from what i noticed was charlie watts runs that band. just a talented, unpretentious human being. cheers to you charlie
Great song, great lesson. A couple of my favorite Stones songs are Hot Stuff, Emotional Rescue and Waiting on a Friend. The Rolling Stones of course have so many beautiful songs. Charlie was the coolest drummer, he will be missed.
hey James, indeed so very sad to hear of Charlie's passing.. a incredibly drummer and beautiful human being. In all the years I've followed your channel since the P.T days you've always spoke so fondly about Charlie and always commented on his drumming. Such a sad day for all us Stones fans, Charlie was unique and had a style all his own. May he rest in peace ! Thanks for the music!!!
I had the good fortune to be living in Switzerland in 2002 and our family was on vacation in Florence . I remember getting a sorbet with my kids when I looked over and saw this distinguished gentleman with his granddaughter…they had gotten their sorbet already and as I saw them laughing , I realized that this was no ordinary grandpa. He was wearing an elegant purple top coat (it may have been made of suede or velvet). It was at this moment that I realized that this distinguished gentleman was none other than Charlie Watts! I pointed at Charlie and asked my kids “hey do you know who that is?” They said “Nope” but I know they dug his cool jacket….after all They were 3,5, and 7 at the time. I only wish the iPhone had been invented or at least I had the nerve to tell him that we were huge fans….RIP Grandpa Watts!
Many thanks for all the guitar videos. Still at the foothills of getting the Stones feel, and I've been on the case since seeing them at Wembley in the the early eighties. Back in the mid eighties, I spent three weeks living in a corridor and an office on a total campus Collage student take over. There also was a professional guitarist staying there too who played in theatre orchestras and Jazz bands. I remember him spending night after night there trying to teach me the strange rhythm and timing of the Stones. I recall him talking about how the drums the guitars and vocals were all either slightly ahead or slightly behind. I could hear the difference when he played Honky Tonk Woman, but I could never get it, so I just thought instead to make it more complicated by filling in more blues runs. Rather than been better it seemed to move further away from any kind of feel at all. A brilliant bass player there suggested to me to listen to Marc Bolan for the genius of simplicity. Any way that was then back at the guitarists climbers hotel where i remained until you tube. Your videos got me to base camp but occasionally I trip up and hit (or miss?) the back beat more by chance than design before sliding back to the swingless slopes. RIP Charlie Watts.
Sometimes you have to drop the F bomb to emphasise the point. Charlie Watts was an amazing person, not just the drummer of the biggest rock and roll band ever, but a real genuine down to earth guy who looks like he could have been your doctor, your postman, your member of parliament, your bus driver, your local butcher or baker. In other words he was more like one of us, than a rock legend. And the way he held himself with style, grace, and integrity, he was more of a role model, than he was of someone to worship. The world can always do with a few more Charlie Watts. Oh, and by the way, as a young teenage guitar player, I never took much notice of drums, even though Charlie was always my favourite Stone, mainly due to his persona, and then Honky Tonk Women blew me mind. I quickly learnt that the idea of bashing the crap out of a kit was a bit more complicated than I thought. RIP Charlie.
48 odd hours later...give or take... Charlie was a champion... I can't see the Stones carrying on... He was an integral factor... the lynchpin... immune to egotism... he had soul. You wouldn't trust the other three to feed your dog. RIP Charlie.
I have a contemporary live Stones bootleg of Get Off... and at the beginning Jagger sings hang on Sloopy an accidental admittance of the origin of the song.
....well how bought that, Keith, and Stevie Ray Vaughn both said " you pick them out of the air sometimes", that McCoy's song was definitely in the air. Thanks-
hey mate thanks for the videos, because of you am finally taking learning songs more serious after decade of playing around. I see we share similar taste, probably like most of the peeps here. Keep rocking, cheers
I think the Vibrato is there. I saw a video of Brian playing his part with Vibrato. On some recordings(mixes) of this song it seems Brian part is low volume in the mix. Great Stone Song, though. Charlie Watts was the man!!
Good choice and yes, Charlie's part in this song is excellent. Brian is doing the arppegiated picking on the Vox Teardrop 12 string during the chorus against Keith's lower string notes. Thank you James(squared) for your tribute to Charlie.
“It’s Charlie’s band, we’re just in it” - Keith Richards

When are Fender and Keith gonna come to terms and issue a commemorative Mcawber?

RIP Charlie, dead set legend
Charlie Watts! As a musician first "drummer" I sat in my room for hours playing along with Charlie since the day they hit the airwaves.

Saw them open with this in Philly in 2013 - just killed it! Thanks so much for the lesson.
It’s hard to think of a greater guitar/drums combination than Ya Ya’s Sympathy between Keith’s rhythm guitar and Charlie filling in the beats.
Can't forget Mick Taylor's outstanding solo and also can't forget that Bill is really kicking back there on the bass. And excellent performance by them.
Charlie will be missed but never forgotten. Nice song to pay a fitting tribute thank you.
