This one of my favorite videos about New Haven pizza that I’ve seen! Love that you show the interior of the restaurants and driving around the neighborhood, rather than just the apizza. I can’t wait to get up there one day! Nice job!
Great video! I've really got to try Zupardi's now! The other place I hear mentioned often for New Haven pizza is BAR, which looks great as well. Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas 🎅 🎄 the challenge of some of the restaurants is Modern opens at 10:30 and Bar at 3pm. I need to figure out the schedule tommorow's revisit of NH
With the Apizza, FoxonPark BirchBeer is the one to drink. It’s the best combination. You can tell the BEST pizza places in New Haven only serve FoxonPark soda.
From south east Massachusetts and only there con with my parents at the casino so have frank pe pe twice once from food court mustroom and spinach and other one in con slices cheese or pepperoni

Any idea on what types of cheeses Zupardi's used? I love to smell great rich cheese in the air! I recall going to King's Island in the 70's as a kid and we would get off the bus in the parking lot and you could smell that rich cheese aroma all over the amusement park! I've been trying for half of my life to duplicate that memory of flavor from a slice of that pizza. Any help would be appreciated. I know some people take their recipes to the grave LOL! Nice video!
And Zeneli, BAR, one6three, NOLO, Pizza Heaven, Grand….its not just Pepe’s, Sally’s and Modern. There’s at least a dozen outstanding pizza places in the NH area meaning the pizza scene has both heights and depth, which is the real reason New Haven is the pizza capital of the world. And BTW, a Foxon Park Birch Beer is the perfect pizza beverage (or a fuzzy baby ducks…). IYKYK
Blown away by this video. Outstanding. Zuppardis clam pie is very good and the texture of the pizza is very well balanced. I actually preferred Modern over Sally’s and Pepe’s which surprised me. Sally’s potato pizza is a nice unique experience too
@@NoahEatsZuppardis looks like pies in get in NY and NJ, the other 3 had that New Haven look to it. Did Zuppardi have a similar taste/texture to Modern and Sallys as far as the dough itself?
@rejectionistmanifesto8836 thanks for watching. I will say the oven definitely has a play with the bake. Zupardi’s uses a gas oven, Modern uses an oil oven and Sally’s uses the coal. Both Zupardi’s and Modern uses a lower temp and bakes slightly longer. Sally’s coal is hot, so a little faster. The crumb structure is similar for each pie in that they are thin and tight. It's the timing in the oven and the teacher that makes it look more uniform as in Zupardi’s and Modern
Epic pizza crawl Noah! I had every single one of those pies. I recommend the Margherita over at Pepe's. I'm not sure if the quality dipped after Frank passed away. Appreciate the facetime :) Very well directed film, I thought the T-shirt reveal at the end made for some great drama.
The New Haven style pizza you have to eat in at the place. Its too fragile to leave in box. There is a place in Astoria called Andrew Bellucis Pizza and their pizza has that New Haven style crust but it's marketed as an artisan NYC pizza.
Thanks for watching and taking time to comment. In this video, I had to take out, but it's interesting that I've had it sitting down pre-video and it wasn't that good :( I'm due to visit and will try again
For me it's Sally's clam pie, sausage pie and plain tomatoes! Wow, it's such an amazing pizza. They are all good but i Sally's was my first with good friends and i just stayed loyal. I love it!
Grew up on Long Island and lived in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn for a few years. Had New Haven style a few years ago. Pepe’s And Modern were the 2 I tried. Both are an excellent representation of local pizza and have a different point of view from their cousins in New York I didn’t find them to be on a height level. For me, the clam pies make a trip to New Haven. Shout out to Modern for having a gluten free offering for my son. Glad I went but I’ll stick with New York. Ans since I live North Carolina near the DiFara in Cary I will always have something world class near me.
Thanks for watching. Unfortunately some places it was easier to get a seating. However the quality should not decline as much as it did with Pepe’s. The Modern held up while it was in the box for moments. I've had pizza to go and enjoyed it more than sit-down. Go figure. I appreciate you're taking the time to comment. See you soon
You should have ordered the franks pizza in person and not online, I guarantee you would of loved it if you did. Also give little rendezvous in Meriden a try they’re great as well.
Thanks for watching! Unfortunately, I've eaten inside, outside, giving it a chance. Just surprised how disappointed each time :( maybe the phone will be the exception
Okay, first of all, Zupardi's is not in New Haven, but 15 minutes away in West Haven, and just celebrated its 90th "birthday" a couple of weeks ago. Sally's originally broke off of Pepe's decades ago. Unfortunately, I have found Pepe's to be somewhat overrated. Am literally moving to a new apartment about a 20 minute walk up State Street from Modern. They are wonderful. I agree with you about Zupardi's. Wish you had tried their sausage and hot cherry pepper pizza... burns going in AND, um, coming out... WHEEEEEE!!! 😅
Go to the little rezdevous in Meriden Ct,130 year old Coal oven I have been going there for 50+ years.I live in MA and still travel down to buy a few pies as good if not better then Anyone in NewHaven !! I
I am a life long New Yorker and always knew New York had the best pizza in America. That is until I moved to Connecticut and traveled to New Haven. New Haven has the best pizza in the country, bar none.
I think the density of the number of places making similar NH style pies is very high, where as you get more variety in NY. At the end of the day. It's all good. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Ok, fair enough. Says a lot that Zuppardi's can compete with the holy trinity despite not having a brick oven. They have a great pie, but for me nothing can take down Sally's, they stand alone.
@@KingKull1971 Come on, how can you compare a "frozen" pie to anything other than another frozen pie? And BTW, the Zuppardi's frozen pie is very good IMO compared to the others. I actually have not been able to find a frozen pie that is even in the same league as Zuppardis. A frozen pie can't compete to a fresh pizzeria pie, no matter how good it is. Come on now, I'm not a novice, I'm a New Haven guy who's been eating NH Apizza for 50 years, you can't just throw out a nonsensical claim like that without backing it up.
@jaykay6387 The frozen pie is bad, I had it before; It's flavorless as it gets. I'm not comparing it to any fresh pizzeria. But I'd rather eat Tombstone, Mystic frozen pizza, Ellio's, or Freschetta pizza any day of the week over a Zuppardi's frozen pie.
when you get ready to do Hot Butter Lobster Rolls, Come back to Connecticut and start with the 7 Seas in Milford, It's the oldest pub and restaurant in town and have been crushing the lobster roll game for Decades.. The hot butter lobster roll was invented in Milford.. just saying . all Four of those places are great, but there's a lot of them around here
Zuppardis for the win! Yes! The Best! Top 2 From Zupp’s.... Sausage (secret family recipe) and Mozzarella Fresh Tomato, Eggplant, Basil, Garlic, Mozz. (Red Sauce)
Nice job! I haven't lived there for thirty years, but it is the pizza I grew up with it and that was the language we spoke. Two things, it is a Southern Italian language, not Northern. The Neapolitan language is where this term comes from, but you did get the contraction of the article correct. Also, it's kind of ah-beetz, but it is really a non-aspirated P, so it isn't a pure B sound. It's hard to explain, but almost like ahp-beetzé. Don't worry, most people in Connecticut actually get it wrong these days too.
Thanks for watching. However, I've sat down and this by far was unexpectedly not as expected for take out In this episode. I've have much better take out, this was disappointing 😞
Unfortunate Pepe's wasn't great but I feel like New Haven pizza doesn't travel super well. I always try to sit down in the restaurant to enjoy it at it's best.
Thanks for watching, I was surprised as I've sat down and this time, I decided not to wait and my SUV was a block away. Oh well time for another visit to New Haven for all sit down and all take out videos
A proper New Haven pizza tour should include the following: 1.) Pepe's White Clam 2.) Sally's Tomato Pie 3.) Modern's Italian Bomb These are the pizzas that put New Haven on the map.
Most definitely!!! Thanks for watching. I'm looking forward to returning. I visited last week, but the Modern line was very long and raining. I want to try Bar's Mashed Potato Pie too. Its interesting to see when places open such as Ernie's and Bar was late afternoon. I tried to time it, but has to catch the ferry
Thanks for watching and commenting. What I find interesting is that I've eaten inside before as well as other times outside, and overall very disappointed inside and out. However, I've gone to places where the box was still good or even better. So I will say for me the Pepe's has been inconsistent with quality and I've given them many chances. But that last pie was very disappointing.
Pepe’s , Sally’s ,zuppardi’s , than modern. You got to eat Pepe’s inside it’s only fair 👍😎. For clam pie I think zuppardi’s Been going to new haven Apizza for over 40 years . My friend and I went to all of them in one day and Pepe’s was the winner. They are all good Anyhow 😎
@@NoahEats understand 👍. It all depends who’s making the pizza. Just ask for small apizza with one less slice of cheese and little on the well done side , Bacon and onion is sooooooo good !!!!!
Drove up to New Haven yesterday from central jersey to have lunch with my friend at Frank Pepe’s. Was good not great. Sally’s and Modern at better in my opinion. But John’s of Bleeker is the King. 🍕
I frequent Modern, Pepe's, and Zuppardi's, and enjoy them equally. Shame you didn't sample all four pizzerias equally. Apizza and cardboard are never a good combo. Sub-par pies are possible from all the big guns, but in-person dining greatly reduces the risk.
Thanks for watching! Yeah, the Takeout and Eat in comments are consistent, so I'm going back. I did the Modern so far ruclips.net/video/e-gsBWGbsBQ/видео.html it's a starts 😀
I grew up in new haven county. All the pizzerias were excellent It turned me into a pizza snob. I am rarely happy with a pizza any where I go in the world.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment as I've had both in the restaurant and in this video in a box. I will revist and sit down again to confirm. But they have always disappointed 😞
I've been going to modern for almost twenty years it's my favorite of the three. But it's pretty Apparent that they don't use similina on the bottom of the pizza. It's part of what I think. Sets them apart from the other places and any other pizza. I've had because they used plain Bread crumbs which gives it nice texture. I've actually modeled my home pizza making off of modern pizza and have got pretty close.
@@NoahEats Yeah Pepe's is also different in the sense where it REALLY sucks the colder it gets. Sallys out of the 3 is the only one that passes the "next day left overs" test
Thanks for watching! Actually, I've been to places where the boxed version was better. So while fresh is typically better, but not in all cases. However that pie from Pepe’s was unfortunately way too disappointing. Additionally, I've had the boxed version of Modern, Zupps and Sally's was much better than many overall. But each time Pepe’s has been consistently disappointing 😞 I greatly appreciate your commenting. And helps me work on formatting the videos. Stay tuned!
@@NoahEats Pizza reviews are always about Neapolitan style pizza, which is what New Haven and New York City are known for. New York does a better job with it than New Haven. But Greek pizza is popular in the North East and is generally ignored. A great Greek pizza joint near me is Elm Hill Pizza in Newington, CT. For the best Sicilian pizza, pretty much any Sicilian bakery will do. I would choose Mozzicato's in Hartford. But don't get the slices. Order a whole pizza.
Modern on State Street is the best- Pepes is hype and Sallys has no flavor to the sauce - go to Modern, taste that one and only unmistakeable dough and sauce - just ask em to go easy on the Mozz ;-)
I've lived in CT all my life- I'm 50 years old and I've eaten Modern, Pepes, Zupps, Sally's (The Spot which was an offshoot of Sallys years ago) and BAR which is more of a night life spot but has a HUGE brick oven and great pizza along with a microbrewery. To this Day - I prefer Modern over the rest but this is talking a Mozz pie - meaning dough, Cheese, sauce. If we're getting into other things like clam pies, etc. I don't have enough knowledge as I judge all these places by their Mozz pies, since they are the basic foundation. Bottom line love these reviews because it shows that people - ordinary people can really discern on attributes that might otherwise go unnoticed - these attributes - the ones you mentioned really make the difference but in the end- it's all personal opinion, right? :)@@NoahEats
So....the Zupp's................... Underbaked, .......................practically RAW Clam pie.........all different versions of pies, the Pepes...............IN THE BOX ........all others fresh at the table....Unfair rating
Thanks for watching, however the true test is a comparison. And the degradation should be non to minimal as I've had pizza in the box much better than out of the oven.
Getting pies that are not optimally fresh is your doing, not the restaurant's. If you want a proper pie, sit down and order one just like everyone else. Otherwise your opinions will be invalid and pointless. And for the record, Zuppardi's is clearly fourth-best out of this group, and Modern is the best of them right now.
Thanks for watching, however I've eat many pizzas where the decline of quality is that much of a difference. In this case. It unfortunately drastically declined for Pepe’s. I was surprised. Just visited again and Zupps took the lead again and I sat in all the restaurants except Zupps to test it out too.
@mikeymutual5489 That's not what I'm saying, the quality should decline that poorly. Unfortunately, I've have plenty of Togo pie ls that are better than many right out of the oven. Just surprised that the difference is dramatic. While eating is optimal, it can't be done. As I said in the video, i will sit in again as I've done in the past. But I will say. Compared to other to go, Pepe’s so far has one of the worst to go pies each time I've visited. Just surprised everytime.
This is a bogus pizza review, because it is not a pizza without meat on it. You are just eating crust, sauce, and cheese, I would not eat any of them without meat on it. Everyone around here gets the meat lovers pizza with 5 different meats on it, including bacon. At the minimum a pizza must have sausage and pepperoni on it, and bacon if they have it. Nobody I know eats a pizza with no meat on it, that is just dumb. And no wonder it only cost $13, it's $2.00 worth of crust, sauce, and cheese, so it better be cheap. The 12 inch thin crust meat lovers near me at Firehouse is $19.00, because it had 5 meats on it, including 2 kinds of bacon, Canadian bacon and regular bacon, which is why it cost $19.00, because it is a real pizza. Not even the kids would eat a plain cheese pizza around here, they would feed it to the dog. And one last thing, I am not waiting in line for an hour to get a pizza, I will go somewhere else, order it to go, get it delivered, or go back when it is not so busy.
@@NoahEats A comprehensive completely wrong take on plain pizza! I grew up with New Haven and Waterbury pizza (an offshoot). Modern is the best IMO, but you should try BAR. It is an ultra-thin take on NH pizza but also great. Pepe's has gone down hill a bit IMO, but their summer tomato pie, and plain tomato pies are both still generally great. Sally's has done a better job keeping quality up with outposts IMO. I get the Sally's from Stamford, CT all the time and it is excellent even compared to the original. Zuppardi's is also great but would probably be my third choice behind Modern and Sally's.
You have an opinion that is WRONG. No matter what you think, pizza is a pizza is a pizza, whether it has just cheese or have meat on them. Why don't you tell Italians that what they are making are not pizza?? LOL
@@1flash3571 You have an opinion that is WRONG. It's not a pizza without meat on it, case closed. I could care less what the italians think about it, they are wrong too.

Nothing has got to be more annoying to a restauraunt and staff then some random dude with a camera acting like he’s been sent from God to rank their food on RUclips..I can only imagine how many youtube warriors go to these same pizza spots w their cameras acting like their the next big thing on Food Network Curious, Do you ask for permission to record then pull out your gear OR do you just walk up with a camera recording whatever you please …staff , the kitchen and patrons eating without permission.
Thanks for watching, yes I do ask and try to minimize other people in the shot. I guess the RUclips Algorithm thought you must be interested in watching my food vlogs. Greatly appreciate your commenting. I've gotten somewhat better at filming and editing. I enjoy the process and visiting places that people ask me to visit. Thanks for the vote of confidence as I never considered being on Food Network. I might be lucky to be on an unknown podcast.
You placed the order online, then they cooked it and let it sit there for a half hour, or longer, until you came and got it, then it was old and bad and it sucked. I would never go to that place again the rest of my life. They should have waited until you got there to put it in the oven, so it was fresh when you got it. They are basically saying to you, screw you online order man, we do not care about you, or care if you get a fresh pizza. And btw, I am in East Peoria Illinois, about a 3 hour drive from Chicago, who has the best deep dish pizza in America. And nobody around here calls a pizza ahbeetz, never not one time in my life, and I am 64 years old. We call it pizza, because that is what it is, it's a pizza, only the pizza snobs call it ah-beetz, so get outta here with your call it ah-beetz stuff, it's a pizza bro. My favorite pizza is from a place called FireHouse, it is a thin crust meat lovers pizza and it is amazing, the best pizza I ever had, and it is only a 10 minute drive from me, so I go there all the time. You can sit at the bar and eat it, or the restaurant side, or eat it while you play the video poker machines, it is the best. I am addicted to it, and I have to have one at least once a week. Sometimes I even get one to go, take it home and freeze it in ziplock bags, and re-heat it in the air fryer when I want pizza. P.S. A plain pizza with just dough, sauce, and cheese is not a pizza, if it does not have meat on it, it's not a pizza in my book, and I would not eat it. Nobody else around here would either. A local barnear me called Crusen's just had free pizza for the College Football Championship game Monday night, so they brought out a sausage and cheese pizza, and everyone got a slice, then they brought out a plain cheese pizza, and it just sat there, nobody even touched it. Then they brought out another sausage and cheese pizza and everyone got a slice, and they took the plain cheese pizza back to the kitchen because nobody would eat it. The rest of the night they only brought out sausage and cheese pizza, because nobody would even touch the plain cheese pizza.
Greatly appreciate your watching and taking the time to write. While I would like to pile on toppings. These pie were recommended for each spot. I know you mentioned what you ordered locally. Have you been to New Haven. Definitely want to read your review of New Haven Pizza.
@@jusbeazy28 To go or eat in, they should only cook your pizza once you get there, so it is fresh, if they offer me a pre-cooked pizza that has been sitting there for 20 to 30 minutes I am going to refuse it and ask for a fresh one, if they say no, I leave and get a pizza from a different place.

Sally’s potato pizza is a nice unique experience too
Merry Christmas 🎅 🎄 I will be visiting New Haven again tommorow 😀

Yeah, Pepe’s real plain is their tomato pie and their best plain is their margherita. Was never as impressed with their mootz.
I'm going to have to revisit!
Antonio, will be trying other pies today 😀
Ngl the guy on your right in Sally's could be a good double for Tom Holland lol. Great video!
Thanks for watching, it's possible, but that guy was much bigger than Spider-Man 😀
Try a white clam with bacon (and garlic) pie at Sally's or Pepe's. (I gotta go to Zupardi's next time I'm there.)
So many choices and I wished I lived closer. Thanks for watching!
The New Haven style pizza you have to eat in at the place. Its too fragile to leave in box. There is a place in Astoria called Andrew Bellucis Pizza and their pizza has that New Haven style crust but it's marketed as an artisan NYC pizza.

Yeah if you feel like a drive you can go about 20 minutes north to Little Reundevous in Meriden. Coal fired since early 1900's

Some great info~
However, a little odd that you ate in at some places while eating take out at others, and then compared them.
I’ve lived in new haven for a while Pepe’s quality has gone downhill sadly in the past several years.
WHEEEEEE!!! 😅

Thanks for sharing and including the facts of the pronounciation region AhBeetz came from. Have a great New Year!!!!

Frank Pepe's pizza DOES NOT TRAVEL WELL. Out of the oven vs out of a box (even for a few minutes) is a night and day difference.

modern doesnt use semolina, they use plain bread crumbs
Thanks for watching, I saw video on New Haven Pizza that included Modern saying Semolina, however recipes secrets are on guard!

Pepe's is a pie you NEED to eat fresh, you cant order out. All new haven pies are like this to some extent.

Try Modern
Modern on State Street is the best- Pepes is hype and Sallys has no flavor to the sauce - go to Modern, taste that one and only unmistakeable dough and sauce - just ask em to go easy on the Mozz ;-)
Modern was my 3rd clip, do you agree with my assessment?

Thanks for taking the time to write a comprehensive comment.
