CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Wash (Alan Tudyk) successfully saves Serenity, but at the cost of his own life.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
A band of renegades on the run in outer space get in more hot water than they anticipated in this sci-fi action-adventure adapted from the television series Firefly. In the 26th century, the galaxy has been colonized by a military force known as the Alliance, but its leadership has not gone unquestioned. The Alliance was once challenged by a league of rebels known as the Independents, but the Alliance emerged victorious after a brutal civil war, with the surviving Independents scattering around the galaxy. Also wandering the edges of the galaxy are the Reavers, who have won few allies due to their violent behavior and habit of ripping apart their enemies and eating them before they're dead. Capt. Malcolm "Mal" Reynolds (Nathan Fillion), who fought as an Independent in the galactic war, is the head of Serenity, a rogue frieghter ship whose crew includes Mal's first mate, Zoe (Gina Torres), who fought alongside him in the war, her husband, hotshot pilot Wash (Alan Tudyk), sunny but dependable mechanic Kaylee (Jewel Staite), and hard-nosed gunman Jayne (Adam Baldwin). The crew of Serenity wander the galaxy, taking on whatever work they can get, from criminal activities like smuggling and stealing to legitimately offering transport to travelers. Passengers aboard Serenity include professional "companion" Inara (Morena Baccarin) and holy man Shepherd Book (Ron Glass), but the real trouble aboard the ship comes with the arrival of Simon (Sean Maher) and his teenage sister, River Tam (Summer Glau). In time, the crew discovers that River has remarkable psychic powers and was being held captive by Alliance forces until Simon came to her rescue. Now the Alliance is hot on the heels of Serenity and its passengers, with The Operative (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a sinister Alliance tracker, leading the chase. Serenity was written and directed by Joss Whedon (in his directorial debut), creator of Firefly, which only lasted 11 weeks on the air but gained a powerful cult following who rallied to get the show released on DVD after its cancellation, leading to impressive home-video sales and and an eventual motion picture deal. A couple of months prior to Serenity's theatrical release, reruns of Firefly were picked up by the Sci-Fi channel, adding even more fans to its cult following.

This scene says a lot about Jayne too. For all his faults, when Mal tells him to secure everyone else, he does, taking the time to verify they were secure before himself. He’s a mercenary jerk, but not irredeemable.
He's a mercenary and betrayed him twice but not personally Mal. I think Mal is like big brother for him. He respects him and he is afraid of him.He can argue with him. But they are family
That's what made Firefly great. Everyone was a character, not a caricature. The scene where he betrayed Mal and thought that Mal was going to flush him out the airlock, he asked him to lie to the crew about how he died because he didn't want the shame of them knowing he betrayed them. That's not how a hack writer would ever write a villainous mercenary.
I was anticipating his character continuation development cause I loved his charc but of course they canceled
He didn't even have to tell him what to do, he just said his name and Jayne knew what was expected and did the right thing
There are folk songs about the man!
A moment in the movie that still wrecks me is when the crew gets the news that Wash ain't coming and Inara and Kaylee immediately look to Zoey with horror and empathy on their faces and Zoey is just loading her gun with a dead face. You could see in that moment what Wash brought to her life and what could never be replaced. That moment just still cracks me open.
She wanted revenge and she hadn't cared if she survived or not
@@sandansaiyan5675 She had nothing to live for. But she did have something to die for.
@@sandansaiyan5675 "*I* might."
I think it’s more of a military training perk. No time to mourn him: the enemy is still out there.
Edit: I think it’s the only way she’s still fighting. She’s on autopilot.
After watching the movie, I distinctly remembered the scene where they learn Wash is missing. I remember a long closeup of Zoe dispassionately (at least on the outside) loading her gun. I was surprised when I watched it a second time that the camera only showed her loading the gun for 1 second. The rest of the time you could only hear the loading process.
When Wash got impaled I was in utter shock for a good minute, then when it is said "Wash ain't comin'" I then went into denial.
What even was that thing?
It's okay they resurrected him as a robot... oh wait.
Dragoninthewest twice
I'm still in denial.
Agent washington?
When I first saw the movie I truly didnt expect that......
Marigen Beltran that is why there is so much merchandise and why tears are shed over the murmuring of this cursed line
Nobody did.....
2019 “Respect and dignity.” Furthermore:
I never noticed Mal calming in the background just saying “Zoe...” when she is trying to get Wash to move. Both acknowledging her loss (and his) as Wash’s friends and crew, but also as a Sergeant in a war who has seen friends die immediately and knows they must go. NOW. and will have to deal with it emotionally later. :’(
And she responded to that even though it was her Husband. That's a war bond, right there.
I always thought this was an incredible depiction of the true ferocity of the Reavers. They just got led into a battle against a technically superior force and this ship, rather than pulling up, turning tail, or aiding it's fellow ships, just continues its dogged pursuit of Serenity. The Reaver fleet that chased Serenity was doomed the moment they came through the cloud. But that didn't matter. Nothing mattered but their prey.
Wish i could find it, but Alan Tudyk had a good story about this line, where he was at some convention or another doing meet and greets and signings and a young woman walked up to him with his picture and asked him to sign it. So he did and he wrote "Im a leaf on the wind, watch how i soar" and handed it back to her. She looked down at the photo, read it, and started crying her eyes out saying "how could you write this?!?".
Not sure if he stopped writing that for fans or not lol.
I remember that video!!!
The moment I realized I didn’t want a sequel to this, it’s not firefly without Walsh
The only reason Wash died is because there WASN'T anything after this.
@@thezachmarsh it was planned to be a movie series, as a way to make up for its cancellation. But it didn’t do well enough to get a sequel
I still think they could make a new series in the universe with a different set of characters. It's the setting as a space-western and excellent writing that makes Firefly what it is, with some good casting they could come up with something new and just as good.
@@alphaprawns It's probably not happing anytime soon...Josh Whedon is a pariah in Hollywood now.
well the whole reason he died is because he wouldn't sign on for a sequel, so they killed him off
I'm not ashamed to admit that this was the first movie moment to make me cry as a teenager. Hell, more than a decade later I still get all misty...

Years later and I still don't understand why Wash had to die. He was the member of Serenity I most related to.
That's why.
Matt Grostick That is exactly the reason why
At least Alan Tudyk's career lives on.
At least he got to see juggled goslings. That's something.
The answer is in writing in general. You see, all the characters are pretty much leads, which has viewers thinking that every single one of them is going to survive it. But, by one of them being killed, it raises the stakes and makes the audience realize, "Oh shit, the rules no longer apply. Anyone can die from this point on!" In fact, Whedon himself stated that was the intent behind Wash's death, as a mean of cranking up the suspense.
I met Alan Tudyk yesterday, now the picture is my profile picture
Nice!
Whoa it still is, nice dedication
Dude that's awesome!!

“He was the best starpilot in the galaxy, and a cunning warrior. And he was a good friend.”
When I finished the series and knew that there would never be any more TV Firefly, I was sort of happy to just assume that Serenity continued flying around the Verse with her crew - barely getting out of scrapes alive but always pulling through. This movie swallows that feeling of narrative "serenity" - gargles it a bit - and then spits it out in a big ball of yuck with a widow, two dead bodies, a missing engine pod and just a whole bunch of misery. I kind of wish it had never been made, even if the movie itself is pretty good.
I can never now write new firefly in my head - I can only consider the aftermath.
It's stupid logic.I like dramatic change of the movie. If you didn't know Wheedon had wanted Firefly to be a drama but producers hadn't allowed it but he did it after all. And I think it's right choice. And I've seen the same story development in another sci-fi story. VN/anime Steins:Gate from comedy to drama with losing of your favorites because it's great. Not everything has happy ending.Or it has but with bitterness
@@sandansaiyan5675 You're not wrong, but you ain't right either. Different people look for different things in stories, and Firefly had plenty of drama potential in it without two devastating deaths hanging over it.
Plus, drama and death is one thing, but when you don't get to see the catharsis and recovery after it, it just feels empty. If they had killed off a major character - if, say, Wash's death had happened in one of the seasons instead of right at the end - I would have liked seeing how that loss changed the crew dynamics, seeing their grief explored, etc. When that exploration is absent, it is very hard not to see the death as cheap.
That's why in the fanfiction community for Firefly, there's a good deal of post-series fanfic that ignores the movie, just as much as there's fanfic exploring the fallout of the movie. The post-movie Firefly verse is a much more bitter place than the (comparatively) feelgood found family dynamics of the show. Sometimes you want one, and sometimes you want the other.
This is one of the few movie moments that makes me cry, no matter how many times I see it. It tears me apart every single time!
Wash's moment of glory is followed by him being killed.
It adds to the tragedy.
I am a leaf on the wind.
Sadness moment in this whole movie. Wash died much too young.
I remember seeing this in the cinema in total shock, the totally mental battle with the Reavers in space, then this crash which seemingly destroys the Serenity THEN... I was not expecting everyone in the theatre to gasp as Wash died.
I've seen this numerous times. I know it's coming every time, and it STILL gets me, still makes me jump, still makes me cry angrily.
This whole series, movie was fantastic! To bad it's not on anymore
My heart broke along with Zoe's. Wash was such a cool character.
This was the moment when I thought: "Yeah, nobody's making out of this alive."
The shots and sound design here are incredible. The feeling of chaos and disorientation when they start to tailspin is so visceral, you feel like you're there in the ship with them.
The impaling was a wonderful jump scare. I had no idea, then tragedy. They really highlighted the militant past of Mal and Zoe(..). As they quickly regroup and save the others. Wash was prolly my first ever 'main character dies' moment and it shook me. I miss Wash, and may I someday go out the same way performing my greatest feat ever just to artfully gloat before immediate death.
"I am a leaf on the wind" always in my heart with tears! very emotional!
Sends a chill everytime
I saw this in the theater before I even knew about Firefly, the TV series - and was frankly blown away. Then I watched Firefly, and was blown away even more. Absolutely a _crime_ that Fox gutted support for this show and eventually cancelled it.
I saw a rumor that Morena Baccarin who played Inara was propositioned by a Fox exec
@@smurfyday That wouldn’t surprise me.
The CGI was beautiful. The close up shots… and everything was just perfect
This was the moment that made the movie perfect. Suddenly, all our emotional investment used against us and we all the felt the horror of watching, a beloved friend die after accomplishing the incredible. Afterwards, we had no idea if the rest would survive, the edge of our seats were where we found ourselves. Jos Wheadon is an amazingly brutal writer.
Your shirt...
i just recently watched it for the first time, i kinda hoped it would turn into a "Rogue One" type story, everyone dies but get the message off. it almost looked that way with all the hits and injuries given in the battle
I still dont forgive him for killing my Irish boyo in season 2 of angel.
Damn you Whedon. Damn you.
@Mikhail Chelpon either way I felt totally gutted. I loved doyle. One of the most enjoyable actors in anything buffy verse.
@@DASRH Unfortunately that one really wasn't fully up to Whedon. The actor was struggling with drug addiction and wasn't doing his job so they had to kill off the character.
No matter how many times I watch this, it gets me. That's one of the reason's I love Joss Whedon's work -- characters who deserve to live die. The stakes are real.
Right in the feels. Every time.
Also in the chest cavity area.
This whole scene is haunting, from start to finish. It reminds you just how brutal and awful the reaver’s methods of attack are and how much Serenity was outgunned by the reaver fleet. Killing a good person like Wash who essentially put himself in harm’s way for the crew to survive. Warfare is hell, no matter where you are in.
But it also begs the question: have the reavers done these types of things to other people like Wash too? What about the other people that the crew encountered?
It also feels so worse for poor Zoe. Watching the love of your life die right in front of you by the means of a harpoon gun is a pretty traumatizing and horrible way to witness someone’s death.
What seriously hurts is remembering that one scene in the TV Series where Zoe tells Wash to take care of himself because she longs to see the day she has children with him.
She did end up having his kid though. She was pregnant
read the comics, she gets her wish :)
It’s been 18 years and this scene still hurts me.
Not just you...
This is the one movie death where I went through all five stages of grief in five seconds.
How do the reavers clean their spikes?
They run them through the Wash! 😢
Bobbobq Entertainment oh my gop
Bobbobq Entertainment run em through the wash.
Bobbobq Entertainment Aw, damn. That's equal parts funny and sad lol
too soon!
CoachMikesFilmRoom you land the ship against all odds, with zero causalities. What do you do?
*say a witticism before exiting*
You roll a zero.
2:16 another happy landing!
still not over it
What sets this apart is that the death wasn't telegraphed in the slightest. A lot of filmmakers would have shown the Reaver ship taking aim at the cockpit, the look exchanged between target and gunner as Walsh realised he was about to die, and tried to build tension.
That it interrupted what we all assumed was going to be a throwaway smug line really made an impact (no pun intended).
It's similar in execution to the line "There is a mome…💥" in Interstellar.
I will never forget seeing this in the theater.... not knowing anything about it going into the movie.... and when this scene played out and Wash dies.... I literally bolted up in my seat and screamed "NOOOOOO!!!!" at the top of my lungs, oblivious to the fact that I was in a public theater.
I was expecting that I would be reprimanded for my action --- but after the movie, many (as in not one or two, but almost 10-15!!!) people came up to me and said "Thank you for expressing what I could not". I don't get emotionally vetted in what I watch, but seeing Wash die.... that hurt.
You know it's coming and it still hits you like a suckerpunch to the gut, like it was the first time.
Too many shows and movies forget that it's all about likeable characters. That's what makes this so impactful.
Saddest moment in the movie. I don't think any firefly fan wanted Wash to die but as a conclusion to the character, it's a fitting final line and reminder of how fleeting life is in the Firefly universe.
First time I watched this was on my laptop, in my dorm room, alone, in 2008, and even then I shouted "NO!" when it happened.
In 2020, watching this is still too soon.
😭 i shouted watching it for my first time yesterday
This movie broke me. my parents showed me Firefly when i was twelve and then showed me the movie after a spent like a week getting to know and love the characters (throughout the show my favorite characters were Wash and Sheperd. specifically Wash because at the time i loved comedy characters and thought they never died. but going from the funny episodes to death and violence cause me so much Whiplash that i felt sick after watching it. EDIT: also my other favorite character was Serenity itself because i loved starships and the designs of them so the ship itself breaking hurt me emotionally
I had seen the series first so I was not expecting to lose Wash.
2018 and I'm still crying in the club
I am a leaf on the wind , watch how i soar! ❤ love these 2
that happened way to FUCKING fast
Sadly, that's how it often goes.
I only just noticed: his dinosaurs fall off the console during the descent (@0:36) -- I wonder if that's foreboding in some way? His luck about to change...
I still remember everyone in the theater screaming "Noooooo!"
Yes you are beloved. Rest well.
Imagining Alan Tudyk's face completely red as he jostles himself around a chair will always sit with me for some reason,
2:29 *when K-2SO is fighting stormtroopers*
Obi One: Another happy landing. 😃
Broke my heart....
His too.
No matter how many Times i see It, it always hurts
I still remember the audible gasp from the audience when Wash was killed when I saw this in theaters. It's been rare that I've seen that kind of reaction from an audience.
It might make fans mad, but this really did work because when Zoe, Jayne, Kaylee, and Simon all get hit during the final battle, you worry about them because Wash died. You know this might be the end for them.
Exactly the setup. When River jumps through the gate, it's on the basis that she isn't coming back.
That was sad. As was losing Shepherd Book.
How do the Reavers clean their harpoons?
They run them through the Wash.
.....I'll see myself out.
Too soon 😂😭
The irony is, considering lore, this is probably the biggest ship on ship battle the Alliance ever faced, and with their own creations.
"Another happy landing!" Oh, sorry. Wrong movie.
and yet he was part of that universe lol XD

First time seeing this scene ever and all I can think is: THAT'S HOW HE DIES?!?!?!? THAT IS A DEATH UNFITTING OF WASH, TO SAY THE LEAST!
I quote from Batman Begins: “Death does not wait for you to be ready! Death is not considerate, or fair!” That’s how Wash dies. I just wish Shepherd Book’s had gotten as much angst as Wash. For the obvious reason.
I don't know if I'm ready to see this again man
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
It's like they knew Book's death didn't really bother me (much as I liked him) so they pegged Wash too. But I'm not among those who wish it never happened, it really had me thinking for a second once Simon was shot that maybe they were all gonna die. Very cool
I'm so glad this is only 2:33 long. I fear something horrible might have happened if it was longer.
My favorite Sci Fi and it never got into full stride...
The first time I saw this I actually jumped and yelled nooooo
everytime I watch this scene even though I know its coming seeing Wash get impaled I feel a spear through my heart.
I'm not crying, you're crying.
Love the detail that Wash is such a good pilot that the G’s don’t effect him at all.
They really went all out with the movie. Sort of like, "if this is the end, I'm going down in a blaze of glory!" At one point at the end, I actually thought several were going to die. Kind of reminded me of Space: Above and Beyond's ending.
Alan Tudyk voiced King Candy in Wreck-It Ralph and Duke Weaselton in Zootopia.
He also voiced the Duke of Weselton in Frozen, hence the role in Zootopia.
Tyler Smith and he's a robot in Star Wars Rogue One
And he's a fucking retarded chicken from Moana.
He's been in every Disney animated movie since Wreck It Ralph. He's become their version of John Ratzenburger (Voiced Ham and Mac and Yeti and lots of other Pixar characters)
Let's not forget Sonny from I, Robot. I know people have mixed feelings about that film (to put it very kindly), but you can't fault Tudyk's performance in it.
"I DID NOT MURDER HIM!"
My cousin And I were watching this, and he’s really good at predicting stuff in movies and randomly guessed he was gonna die and he did I was like NO way!!
This movie was REALLY dark.
It's been years... I'm still not over it...
...while actual real deaths in your life are now long-forgotten...
@@jschnei3 well, I wouldn't say long forgotten... But I've definitely coped with them better....
Always respected how Joss was never scared to kill off characters. It makes every dangerous situation so much more compelling. Unlike almost all of these tv shows and movies who either never kill anyone or kill them and “bring them back”.
yeah GLENN
I can watch this scene a 100 times and Walshes death always surprises me.
I will never stop being mad about this. It's been almost 20 years. I'm never letting it go. I will take this seething anger with me to my grave.
I know many people hate the idea of seeing Serenity crash landing, but can we give it up to the ILM Model Shop for not just making a large scale model of Serenity, but making the crash landing feel real? Joss could have said, "We can do it CG." But, nope, he wanted us to feel the weight and impact as she crashed. And the ILM Model Shop didn't disappoint.
Hey thanks RUclips algorithm... how'd you know I wanted to cry today?
When Serenity is sliding on her belly and her engines are ripped off I remembered the scene when the salesman said "Ship like this be with you till the day you die'". I thought at that point, Joss is going to kill them all. Then a moment later we lost wash.
I almost left the theater.
Damn I liked Wash, he was so likeable 😥
Another happy landing.

I just have to say, that death always felt like bullshit to me. He survives the crash but then BAM impaled outa nowhere. Like it would honestly have been better for him to be killed in the crash and say his line while dying rather than sudden and random death imediately after surviving something that could have been fatal far more easily.
From where I replied elsewhere, a quote from Batman Begins: “Death does not wait for you to be ready! Death is not considerate, or fair!”
@@shepardbook yeah but this is a story and since death being sudden or unfair or inevitable isn't a theme for the story this death lacks impact aside from just disappointing the audience. I really still think if they wanted Wash dead it would have been better to kill him in the crash itself.
I finally came to grips when this when I realized that this was all Joss Wheadon. They (the network) killed his baby, so he took vengeance. Epic.
Yup. Still traumatizing on 2022
