Maybe flamethrower will be a good choice for plantera due to the tentacles being pierced while dealing great damage (Like I thought when I first played the game, yeah I was dumb, I thought fire dealt more damage to it)
These flamethrower effects looks so cool compared to before. I find it odd that new Elfmelter stops working underwater as the flames it shoots now is frostburn/frostbite, which if memory serves doesn't dissipate in water. I hope in some later patch they change the look of Spasmatism's cursed flamethrower, it looks very outdated compared to these new flamethrowers.
its because how flamethrower work, they shoot fuel and then ignite it. if you shoot the fuel underwater even if it ignites underwater, it wont go that far, so this actually kinda makes sense.
I still remember the old, old good days where mechs were the end game bosses, mega shark was the best weapon and wings were so weak that everyone was using gravity pots instead, and honestly, I haven't used flamethrowers since then, but they sure look sick now
Fun fact: the flamethrower benefits from the Frost armor set bonus, meaning that it inflicts Hellfire AND Frostbite at the same time, resulting in massive damage over time. This, combined with its high direct damage, can chew through even the Twins very quickly, as long as you have the mobility to keep the pressure up and evade their attacks. I found the Lilith's Necklace mount (dropped rarely by wolves) and the sandstorm in a bottle work wonders for that.
I haven’t had a chance to play 1.4.4 just yet, but I’m really excited! The revamped Dark Lance and Elf Melter are perfect for a couple characters of mine!
I'm 2 months late but the normal flamethrower is also incredible vs Plantera, particularly phase 2! Being able to completely ignore or outright kill the little bastards that appear alongside phase 2 plant makes the fight CONSIDERABLY easier in all difficulties. It's practically a must-have for me now!
I always liked the idea of the flamethrowers in general, but sadly it wasn't a well enough developed sub-class to use. I had hoped to maybe get 2 more similar ones in the future for pre-hardmode and early hardmode but sadly we didn't get any more, but the way the 2 are now I'm glad we got something that made them better and more useable. If anyone is interested in doing a full flamethrower only playthrough, calamity has a pretty decent flamethrower progression.
Someone should make a full flamethrower progression system for the vanilla game, allowing you to get the flamethrower very early but at the cost of much less damage output, then add upgrades to the flamethrower as you progress so it's always relevant
@@dariusandone3636 as someone who loves the flare gun deeply and thinks its a total Eater cheese i want it to deal ranged damage. (whats strange is that flares do deal ranged damage)

IS THAT A SANTA CLAUSE REFERENCE?? Also, I’ve fallen in love with the Elf Melter now that it’s been reworked. Always a fun weapon, but now that it’s a god tier crowd control I can’t NOT use it. OOA here I come
I recently finished the game with a friend, as a ranger, and the Elf Melter absolutely carried me until the Vortex Beater. It deals ridiculous damage due to its 15 armor pierce and it shreds crowds of enemies with ease. Literally one of the best pre-lunar ranged weapons
Elf Melter was actually a great option for the solar pillar even before the buff; as far as I know, it’s the only ranged weapon that isn’t reflected by the Selenian and has enough damage to deal with everything else. You’d still need something to deal with the Crawltipedes, though.
I absolutely loved using flamethrower as a support weapon (set on fire and switch to main damage, crowd control). I really enjoyed the visuals and wished for some damage buff, cuz such a unique weapon deserves it. This rework might be actually the reason for me to go back to the game
Imagine a weapon called Soulmelter that has cursed flames effect. And maybe a Crimson variant that has Fire effect and ignores all defense or something like that.
If you like debuffs, I’d recommend them. I for one keep things like the golden shower in my inventory post cultist simply because debuffs are that strong. I think the biggest change is that the hellfire debuff and frost burn debuff are so much less resisted in this game than on fire so as a secondary they are WAY more viable just to deal debuffs to the enemy. Also, the flamethrower was actually underrated for Plantera PRE-rework, now it’s likely a very strong option. People don’t really think of it this way but debuffs are just more potions. Rather than buffing you, it makes the boss less powerful/less armored/the fight goes by faster. Maybe this will get people to rely less on different ammo types and more on weapon swapping? Idk but overall I’m here for the buffs
I managed to kill golem with the elf melter in master mode, full shroomite gear with mask helmet + damage increasing accessories added up to 4K dps when all parts of golem were hit. Include ichor every now and then against enemy’s vulnerable to it for extremely effective slaughtering pre lunar events
I mean if we're going hyper-analytical... No, fire in general requires fuel, oxygen and heat to keep burning. Assuming that frost-flames are actually cold, that eliminates the need for heat, but not necessarily for the other 2. However, if we're going by the logic that it needs none of them, you would still need to account for the fact that for something to give you frostbite that fast, it needs to be incredibly cold, probably colder than -100 degrees celsius. At that temperature, water will also freeze at similar speed, so the flames would almost instantly cause the water to freeze and completely freeze over the player and the elf melter. Though then again it's an rpg game, the entire terrarian world is dictated by the devs and we can't apply normal physics to it, so this entire paragraph has been pointless. Have a great day.
This alongside the fact that the Shroomite Helm now also boosts flamethrowers (as well as all other non-bullet/arrow weapons) makes the Elf Melter legitimately one of your best weapons for Golem, as you can deal great damage to all of its segments at once. Maybe the Snowman Cannon with Mini Nukes will outdamage it, but that’s also incredibly expensive compared to just using some gel that you’ve probably gotten thousands of over the course of your adventure.
