Never thought about using the clamp while the caliper is on the car. Thanks for that tip. I always do it using one of the shoes to compress the piston before I stalling the new pads. Looking forward to the swap.
I had a '99 2.5RS coupe years back that I commuted pretty heavily in. It never let me down. I sold it with over 190,000 miles on it and I was still driving it over 800 miles / week. It was blue with gold Subaru wheels, 05 WRX seats front and back, trimmed out but basically stock. Amazing little car, I've purchased 3 Subarus since then.

Frig, up here in eastern Canada we deal with so much rain, snow and salt that almost every car has significant rust damage, even with an oil undercoat The simplest job requires a hammer, wd-40, an impact wrench, an extra long breaker bar, the occasional blowtorch and drill, all while getting covered in the salty oily undercoat
yay for no rust! Man that seemingly went so smoothly. I'm so used to dealing with needing to mushroom a bolt and hammering the rear rotors off in the Northeast. I do remember having issues with my RS' stock brake booster and brake problems. This no rust will make the swap so much easier for Keener with switching the Xmember and such. Also I'm sure you already know, stock rs trans is better suited to the 205 than the GD WRX transmissions that people would use. 4.11 ftw
So stoked you’re going to be doing documenting a the swap. I’m trying to get ready for the same. My bugeye wagon is rusting out and I have an RS with a blown engine. It’s an autocross build but should basically be the same. Please, go over as much detail as possible!
Hey Buck! I have a 2001 RS coupe with the manual transmission, bone stock except for a rear sway bar and cold air intake. Its been my dream car ever since I got into cars and I cant believe I actually was able to get one. Lots of people say I should keep it the way it is because its a clean title and in great condition, but honestly im going to keep the car for the rest of my life so i figure i should just do whatever I want with it. I've had fun driving it around the way it is and it was a fantastic car for my first manual, but im ready for something more and i want to give the car the engine it deserves, im sure you and i can agree the ej253 can feel a bit wimpy at times. Im looking for 2005 wrx's right now so I can swap an ej205 in, and then later get the 207 parts. In the video it seems like you guys said that you are looking for a jdm ej205, if so why is that? So excited for this series as it will probably end up being a huge tool for me when i swap mine later this year. good luck buck, youre the man!
Snow If you’re keeping the car for good do as you please. I feel you will enjoy the car more swapped as long as you do it right. I went JDM due to it being so easy and cheap.
BuckYeah i can’t believed you replied, you’re the best man! I can’t explain to you how much the car means to me. I learned to drive with an automatic 2001 outback 3.0, and later learned manual on my friends 95 accord. I knew I had always wanted to get this car but I never thought I could be this in love. The biggest smile comes across my face every time I see it because I always seem to forget just how cool they are. All that to say I’m never gonna sell, it’s till death due us part. So it’s sounds like we’re going boosted >:)

Cool lookin fwd to the swap series, was interesting as you were doing the brakes I was thinking, needs some new KYB struts and GC STI interior but now ya talking engine swaps, prob already in the plan, can’t wait 🤘🔥
I also bought an EJ205 from JDM California for my ‘03 “Bugeye.” What I forgot to do was research if there’s any garages within a 60 mile radius that know how to finish, Dyno, and tune the swap! Two years on a normal man’s salary and I’m still only 60% done! 😂🙏🏼
My car is salvg title too. Hit something in the road, and insurance salvg the title because they thought the trans was messed up. The throwout bearings in the 5 speed Legacy GTs are plastic... (why Japan....why)!!!??? And it shattered. So one new clutch kit later, it's perfect. I dont care about the title as long as I know why and if it isn't something serious. But these Subies are so easy to swap! I didnt have a lift so I pulled the motor to do the clutch. While it was out, I replaced things hard to get to, like gaskets n stuff. The EJ255 has been good to me so far. Can't wait to see the EJ20 swap!
Nothing’s worse than fighting with rusty nuts and bolts when trying to do a simple job. Wish my VW bus was as clean as this RS. Looking forward to watching the engine swap!
I’m no pro but are those rotors directional? Did I see the drill pattern facing one way on the fronts and the rears the opposite way. Other than that car looks great. Mine has 20x more rust, buts primarily a dirt day car so it’ll be all good.
Bucky you sure you put front rotors correct ? Look like left its right and oposite. Drills and hooks should attack calipers and now you put them like going on revers. I dont konw how to say it but its my exp as mechanic. Also one tip clean hub before put new rotor. Finaly first 50mil you should brake gently so new pads and rotors get set properly. Cheers mate and best regards from Poland
