Excellent reviews. I had a 991.2 but I have swapped it with the 1st gen 991 Carrera due to the naturally aspirated engine. You have spoken some legendary words " after driving this car every other car feels like a compromise". You have encapsulated over 5 decades of motoring perfection in 11 words. Well done
I own this base 991 911 and dig it. I have 20's w/PDK, just a perfect ride for daily driving and getting on it. Listen, unless you're made of money the base Carrera is more than adequate (especially in LA).
I really enjoyed this review, as comprehensive video reviews of the base Carrera are hard to find. I just purchased a CPO version very similar to your test car in this video. 2014 Carrera in Mahogany Metallic with Luxor Beige interior, PDK, Sport Exhaust, Sport Chrono, Premium Pkg, Bose, and 20 in S wheels. It's a thing of beauty, and the color is very rare and always evokes stares and thumbs up from other motorists. For a daily driver here in the States, anything more than the base 3.4 is unnecessary, because unless you are tracking your car you can never really push these vehicles the way they are intended to be driven and still retain your drivers license. As a long time BMW M car owner, I have to say that this car is on another level. Thanks for showing the base model a little love.

You made some very good points. I agree that the 911 is the most socially accepted sports car - that is due to it's understated styling similar to Audi. I also agree that after driving a 911 everything seems like a compromise... Even more expensive supercars feel like they are "trying too hard" and thus a compromise. They are a perfect balance of form and function and styling. Lovely brand!
I would prefer the "base"-modell too - 30 Years ago, I had my first 911, a 1966 A-Series with 130 Horses. And also this was NOT a slow car. Personal experience is more important than 0 to 60 times. Btw good review -

No Foolin I don’t know about a new 911 turbo they are crazy fast. I just got my first perfect 8 year old 911S and I’m very excited it’s way more power than my old base Boxster. This 911 is everything I thought it would be and I’ve been waiting 30 years to get it. I blame it on my neighbors 1979 targa it got me dreaming!

i'm glad you tested this car, the 911's that are tested by the big magazines go for 135 grand out the door, its ludicrous, these cars with 20K miles on them can go for 68K and actually are driven by regular people.

While watching this I realized how we value extras in cars. A car is seen as being of good value when it has all those added luxuries for a fair price...but do you really buy a car for its luxuries...no a car of good value is a car that is so good that the experience of driving it and of seeing others enjoy it, has no fair price...What would the world be without Porsche. Thanks Guido for putting me in the position of having an epiphany.

Excellent review. Your car reviews do have their own personality - probably the best on RUclips. I'm always surprised how you capture the real feeling in the car, its sounds, its vibrations - overall atmosphere. Really THE proper reviews for a petrolhead. I just bought this car (3.4L) with PDK. I have it zero optioned like this one. The only difference I got the 20" wheels and didn't get the Sport Chrono. Your video makes me look forward to getting it even more. Mine arrives in June. Thanks for another excellent review.

There are many reasons and I are right with what you said about 911 driver's being more careful in general. There's this wonderful book called ' 911 ' by Ulf Porschardt about this car. Absolutely! The R8 was worst: kicked off side mirrors, every day new scratches (esp. the big bonnet upfront), it was terrible… never experienced that with my 911s.

You know I called the Cayman S the better driver's car in my review and I stand to that...From a rational point of view the Cayman is the better car, but for me the 911 is simply my favourite car...It looks much better to me ( don't like the rear of the Cayman that much ), I love its history and it feels more special to drive for me too. But I can't deny the fact that the new Cayman S is a stunning car, drives beautiful and feels like a proper Porsche..Hope that's a good answer !
the 911 rear is miles better looking than the Cayman’s rear plus the 2 tiny seats in the back of the 911 is a plus as well..both great looking car but last week..i took home a low miles nicely specd base 991.2…thats all i needed!! great video as usual Guido!! keep em comin!! thanks

Excellent review Guido! You made many helpful comments. I think that the base car would be more fun for me, especially since I like to wind out a motor. Interesting comment about the car being more socially acceptable. Even here in America, 911s are sleepers, not for people that want to be flashy, and I'm growing to appreciate that quality of the 911 more. Would you choose the PDK or manual if you were ordering a standard Carrera? I really want to review one of these, or better yet, own one!

Here is the complete option list for a 2015 991 911 C4S coupe: 7-speed manual, rhodium silver/black interior, platinum silk gloss wheels, 18 way adaptive sport seats, premium plus package, Bose audio, park assist (front/rear), sport design mirrors, solid sun roof, PASM sport suspension, sport chrono package, sport exhaust, gauges and chrono clock face in white, sport steering wheel. I am from Canada, so here is the best part--- Euro delivery at Zuffenhausen in September! Thank you again for your reviews and comments. They were very helpful in making all the choices. My favourite comment was when you were raving about the auto-rev matched downshifts in the 7-speed manual with chrono! (C4 manual transmission review). I wasn't sure I liked the idea of the car heel-and-toeing for me, but now I'm really looking forward to it. No PDK for me!!!!

Fun-wise, i'd rather invest my money in a great Cayman S (or a 987 Cayman R) instead of going for a basic Carrera. Why? Because perfection isn't always what you're looking for when buying a sports car. Sometimes it's also the feel of driving "sporty" and a too soft suspension and a too quiet engine/exhaust just doesn't deliver that "sporty" feeling. But hell yeah, again a very good review Guido!
Guido, camera work in this particular video is phenomenal! Only thing that I would recommend is to buy external mic that attaches on your shirt so you can get much more realistic (acoustic) audio. Other than that, I think you are becoming one of best (honest) reviewers on RUclips (seems that Porsche recognized that).
Richtig klasse Aufnahmen dieses Mal, mit der passenden Musik ... einfach herrlich :) Was Du gesagt hast, habe ich in meinen 2 Tagen irgendwie auch gemerkt. Man wird mit dem Auto voll akzeptiert, die Leute halten an und wollen darüber reden, interessieren sich richtig für das Auto. Bin jetzt zwar außer dem 991 noch keinen anderen Sportwagen gefahren (zum vergleichen), aber der Porsche kam zumindest für mich überall echt gut an :)
I don't think they will lowver the prices, but there are great second hand 911s and the Cayman S, which both are great ways to get superb sportscars. The GTR is great, but nothing you want to keep for 10 years imo. Porsches keep their value much better than any other cars too, at least here in germany...That's something to consider, before you think they are overpriced :) Greetings, TheGetawayer

You provide the best video reviews available and I love your accent. Since you are an enthusiast who really knows your cars, I'd like to see you compare a 911 Carrera 3.8 PDK with a McClaren MP4-12C since these are the only two sports cars I've Hearn reviews say you could use as a daily driver.

I absolutely love 911, but I would certainly go for a manual, they made driving with manual even easier with rev match technology. I bet it's as good to drive in town as a VW Golf.
The base 911 with the Bose & sport chrono package....that's all I need and will save a ton of money compared to a S but, I would rather have the carrera S. good review and POV.

Danke Lukas ! Ich hab tatsächlich schon einen CLA 45 angefragt gehabt, nachdem mein Video zum C63 so schnell so viele Aufrufe bekommen hat. Allerdings waren da schon wieder alle Testwagen ausgebucht und ab Mitte Oktober wird die AMG-Flotte in den Winterschlaf versetzt. Ich kann also erst ab Februar wieder mein Glück probieren...Ich ziehe deshalb den CLA45 vor, weil es die A-Klasse in den USA nicht gibt, wo ich viele meine Zuschauer habe. Ich bleibe dran. Mal schaun ob Mercedes es ermöglicht :)

From a rational point of view the Cayman S is the better car, but as a fan, for me there is no substitude: I will always prefer the 911...I wasn't expecting much from the base Carrera, but when you hit the Sport button and really drive it fast, it's exciting. I hear you and I would love to review BMWs again, but other than Porsche, Audi or Mercedes AMG they are not willing to support my work by giving me testcars..I've asked them two times and their reaction was so arrogant, that I really don't feel like asking a third time. Sad story considering that I loved the brand and my reviews were watched well over 500.000 times

Sure ! The Cayman S is a little bit more agile and eventhough the Carrera is faster on paper, to me the Cayman pulls a little bit stronger out of 2nd and 3rd gear corners...I said in my review that the Cayman S is the better driver's car and I stand to that..But for me the 911 just feels more special to drive . I struggle to tell you why, but there's just something that gives me more confidence driving it than any other car...The traction is amazing, the ride is perfect..Yeah, I love this car :)

Es ist sehr ungewöhnlich, dass man tatsächlich mal ein Video findet, welches sich dem 991 Carrera in der Basis widmet. Dazu auch noch mit der "normalen" Abgasanlage. Große Klasse!
Einen Kritikpunkt habe ich allerdings, obwohl, Kritikpunkt ist falsch, nennen wir es mal eher Anmerkung. :P
Da scheinbar niemand außer dir in der Lage ist mal über den Tellerrand zu schauen und sich dem 991 Carrera ohne "S" annimmt, wäre für mich persönlich mal ein kleiner Soundclip der Standartabgasanlage beim Carrera interessant. Existiert aus diesem Video ein derartiger Clip?
Danke für das Kompliment ! Ich hatte Porsche relativ kurzfristig um einen weiteren 911er Testwagen gebeten und habe dann diesen normalen Carrera bekommen. Eine Aufnahme im Standgas oder direkt vom Auspuff während der Fahrt, habe ich leider nicht gefilmt. Mir war der Sound wirklich zu dünn, muss ich sagen. Selbst im Sport Modus. Das Geld für den Sportauspuff ist sehr gut investiert, wenn Du zum Vergleich mal mein Carrera 4 Video anschaust, wo der Testwagen diese Anlage hatte : ' 2013 Porsche 911 (991) Carrera 4/4S ( Manual ) ' Test Drive & Review - TheGetawayer
Es sieht nach viel Geld aus, ich weiß, aber emotional gewinnt das Fahrerlebnis ganz gewaltig aus meiner Sicht...Vielleicht schaust Du mal meine Videos zum Boxster S und Cayman S an, die beide auch keinen Sportauspuff hatten und auch etwas dünner klingen.

Oh, I see. thanks for clearing that up for me. I was so confused since all the German people I've met are all really nice no matter what sort of car you drive. I always assumed since you guys have the best motorway system in the world, sports cars are more than just luxury item. i guess not everyone shares the same passion towards sports cars, and to be frank German do make the best of the best sports cars in the world (IMO). 911 has been my childhood dream since I was 9, it will always will be.
Can't go wrong with a 911 but the S is the way to go! Put out the extra 10K and get far more for the money! In the alternative buy a CPO 991 S with a couple of thousand miles on it for less than a new base 911!

Although I agree with getting the Sport Chrono with the PDK I don’t agree with his reason. I got it because you have two additional choices of remapping the engine throttle response and trans shift points. Launch control is a bonus but how often are you going to use it. I’ve had my car for 6 months and haven’t used it yet and probably never will.
Fair point. I'm just a manual guy, so I either drive in normal mode or use the paddles. Never use Sport Mode or Sport Plus
I think most answers from other viewers lead into the right direction...German people can react abit jealous to expensive sportscars. You're getting tailgated and sometimes you get a few bad looks. I never understood that. It was especially bad driving the Audi R8...
The 911 has a certain aura that makes it different. People have more respect for 911-drivers here. You notice that on the autobahn, where people jump out of the way and just by the positive looks that you get on the street...

Nein, das liegt am Mikrofon der Kamera. Zudem waren die Straßen nass, was auch nochmal für mehr Innenraumgeräusche sorgt. Als Fahrer nimmt man aber nur den Motorsound wahr :)

You are my new favorite car journalist. Love the cinematography and the way you review the cars. I hope you get your hands behind the wheels of all the new sports cars this year. I'd really like for you to review the new corvette but I think at the moment, there's hardly any c7s in Europe for journalists to test drive. I'd like to hear your thoughts on it compared to the 911/s because its been note resting to see what other reviewers in Europe have said about it. Some didn't like it as much like chris Harris (but he had the auto) some really liked it (top gear mag) I'm probably not going to get a lot of love with this comment because this is a video for a porsche not vette but I jmainly just wanted to say how much I appreciate this chanel. So seldom do we see reviews with not tons of options. I'd be interested to know if you think people buying the base carrera are enthusiasts more over the people buying the 911 s with the options. It would seem to me people who jave the money for the base could easily get the more powerful s.

I tried to get a Corvette, but it seems like they are not interested in working with me, just like BMW btw...It's hard to say which people buy the base. I have a 991 3.4 with 20" and all the sports options.
Driving the Nürburgring a lot, I have to say the car is GREAT, and also for long drives. My brother has the S, and if anyone test those cars side by side accelerating, I think people would be surprised how small the difference is in performance, really minimal. However, the S feels stronger of course, but it more a feeling than anything else.

Hello :-) If I lived in Germany or a country with low tax on cars, I would probably have bought an S. In Norway similar 3.4 and 3.8 are 22.000 Euros different new price. Therefore I tested both engines before ordering, and like both engines a lot, but for me not worth the price. But the -20mm PASM and PTV are great at the Ring, I use studded 19" tires in the winter and having a lot of fun on the snow and ice, sideways during winter, raceline during summer :-)
Hours and hours on the autobahn racing an S, there is really very little difference even in very high speed. On the track it comes down to the driver more than S vs base. Dag
I agree and you really have skillz, buddy ! Very much enjoyed watching the videos. Did you use the Sport Plus auto mode or did you shift manually ?
TheGetawayer I always shift manually, except for my last trip where I tested auto upshifts and manual downshifts plus kick downs when possible. It worked fine. The flexibility is great. I always was a manual guy, but must say the PDK is perfect for track driving, and also love it on the street, would never go manual for his kind of car. I have posted a video where my brother drives my car in Sport plus auto mode, 8.12 BTG. There you can see how the auto modes works, it is amasingly aggressive and downshifts hard entering corners, impressive stuff.
Great to hear your opinion, Dag ! One of the Porsche works drivers at the Turbo Launch event took me for a ride on the track and they only use auto mode according to him. I love it too, but shifting manually just feels more involving to drive to me, so I always prefer shifting myself
