@@theselfishcodependent Big City: Groningen. Beautiful old downtown, university town, good food, everyone was very nice to me. Small City: Alkmaar. Clean, pleasant, lovely canals, good restaurants. My waiter was from Norway and she told me I must visit her country. I’ve never seen anyone so excited to talk about their home country as she was! And I met a retired nun there, and we visited for 45 minutes and she was so nice, articulate and perceptive. If there’s anywhere in the world where you can meet a stranger, laugh, become fully engaged in conversation, and even have a cry, in such a short time, then leave feeling happy, I’d have to say it’s The Netherlands.
Still waiting for your first blog in Dutch!! It will be fun to see you speak Dutch. As to the guy saying food is terrible here, fair enough … but to then recommend Loetje: LOL… Nine streets is completely ruined by over tourism. As you found out yourself.
Even this did not convince me to go to Amsterdam. I'm sure there are a lot of lovely places in Amsterdam, but the city as a whole is not my thing. I think that you might be surprised with Breda. Not too far away for you and you can really see and feel the difference with the well known Dutch cities. A lot of history, but the restaurants and cafe's are, or at least used to be, great as well. I've not been there in a while, so I hope somebody else will give recommendations.

The Netherlands is beautiful, snd the people are wonderful. I spent a few days in Amsterdam but my heart is in the smaller cities and the countryside.
