Lucas i know a few people have already commented to this effect but i really love your work on this channel man. You avoid the overly pretentious food critic bullshit and stick to describing the food for what it is and how it works well together. The first video i watched on this channel was one by you and it earned your channel an instant subscription. You make this channel better than Munchies, keep doing your thing.

Dear Lucas, you will forever be remembered among us Filipinos as the one who ate sisig, rice, and malasado (egg) using a fork. I'm sure all of us were staring at that untouched spoon the whole time. Thank you for finally visiting a Filipino restaurant. I've been waiting for a video in which I actually know how the food really taste.

Fusion being the keyword! I know from my 3 weeks spent in Quezon City that Filipino cuisine is not about pork belly, but about eating rice rice rice, fish guts & heads, and hotdogs! My impression is that Filipino cuisine is about wasting nothing..case in point a national dish being dinuguan. Now I am craving kare kare lol.

Yeah, I’m not ready for the guts thing. We’re gonna let you guys enjoy that part. I like the chicken and the pork belly dishes and I want to try the noodle dishes. As long as there’s no guts, I’m fine. I don’t do heads or ears either. And no noses! My friend said that he has had sisig and there’s ears and noses involved. That’s kind of intense. Anyway, saludos y bendiciones from this Latino to our distant Filipino cousins. 🤗
I'm not hating or anything but I keep seeing "Filipino" food in these vids but it's always with the American twist. I understand the idea behind it and the market you're trying to garner but if I get the opportunity, my dream is to start an all out Filipino joint in LA or NY. I want to sell the idea of getting the full, pure, unadulterated Filipino food experience. Home cooked feel, literally how mom makes it no BS, traditional, classics like adobo and sinigang, Bicol express etc.. rice with almost every dish, spoon and fork, or kamayan, the whole nine yards. My mission, to get the realest Filipino food experience out in the world.
I think the main problem with serving authentic Filipino food is the amount of time it takes to prepare a dish. Most successful Filipino restaurants I've been to, and still go to, are all banquet halls. Often times they have great variety, great food, but I get how unappealing it would seem to outsiders.
Max's got branches in CA if you want "pure" unadulterated filipino food experience. :D
The funny thing is, there's a lot of mom/pop filipino places but they are usually empty. The only time I see people in them are when they are in the little market side. Many Americans don't have a refined palate and are very closed minded. The "fusion" or "americanized" filipino spots most likely sell better in this country. I'd like to try one of these places and see how the fusion between the foods taste.

Love that people from all over the world recognize the unique flavors that come out of Filipino cuisine. Those are some of the most fancily cooked Filipino meals I've ever seen though. Props to the guys at Silog in LA!

I get this is Filipino "fusion" but I would've loved to see him introduce the audience to traditional Filipino food. Don't be scared. Open your taste buds!!! Eat diniguan... Try kare-kare with a heaping spoon of bagoong! Haha

A heaping spoon of bagoong lol...get your camera ready. I love it on mango.
Its usually pork or beef and sometimes tripe with an array of vegetables with a peanut butter based sauce/soup served with a fermented shrimp paste on the side that has a deep strong salty ocean flavor (they call this bagoong and they use it since the dish is more sweet than it is salty so they use the bagoong to give a better combined flavor of sweet sour salty spicy and a little bit of bitternes)
It's basically Ox tail peanut stew that's great with shrimp paste. Some authentic fiesta food all up in there.

At almost near the end of the video, I agree. Japanese restos, Italian restos, Mexican, and other foreign restos spreads around the globe. Filipino restos appear few in numbers until now and /filipino restos should be raised more in numbers in order to introduced more to the world in order learn more about foodie culture.

This is like americanized filipino food. Well this looks quite simple, unlike the exquisite expensive filipino fooods in America.

+Victor Yuen Yes, I know that. Thats why I wanted to point out that this isn't the authentic filipino food. Some tells its 90 percent oil and fat, but thats not how authentic one's are prepared.
Yeah it's fusion
Yeah, I think filipino food that IS represented in America is just a very small % of what the islands have to offer. But this is similar to practically ALL ethnic cuisine represented in America. For example, Japanese food is much more than Sushi, Sashimi, Ramen, Udon, Mochi and Donburi. Mexican food is much more than tacos, torts burritos, salsa and mole. In fact the Mexican food that the west or majority of the world thinks is "Mexican" is actually "Tex-Mex" or "South-Western" cuisine.
Authentic is such a relative word, ESPECIALLY when it comes to Filipino cuisine that has been touched by so many cultures and that has evolved. I mean, "Pancit Canton" "Lumping Shanghai" you could get some cantonese or shanghainese person saying that those dishes are NOT authentic too.

Hi, Lucas! In most Filipino homes, we'd eat all the dishes you ordered with rice. :-)
Perhaps you already know this, but almost all dishes are meant to be eaten with rice. If you're up to trying more Filipino dishes, I suggest "sinigang." It's a broth-based dish with meat or seafood that's made sour with tamarind, calamansi or other Filipino sour fruits.
You do a really nice job capturing the essence of Filipino food and distinguishing it from other Asian cuisines. I find it's really hard to do because this cuisine is so heavily influenced by other cultures. For example, when you talk about lumpia, never once did you refer to it as an "eggroll" or its sauce as "sweet & sour sauce." You present it as completely separate dish, giving the humble lumpia some much needed respect and autonomy. You rock Lucas! Extra awesome that you have some Chicago roots!

Rachel and Nick its really good! You should try it! If u like soup, i advice sinigang 😋😋 u can choose from pork, salmon head, fish, shrimps, etc. There's so many versions. If u like spicy foods and coconut, there's bicol express. Spicy, and has gata. Its coconut. Super yummy. But my personal favorite is beef nilaga. Its soup. Its good. And sisig. Pork sisig. There's chicken sisig as well.

I am the next foodie working on it. There is another person in Canada doing it up for the Filipino's already. I take pride in cooking food from around the world because they are so close to who I am and where my ancestors from because I am mixed with many great people . Definitely gonna do it up for the people on a international level .

man, as someone who live in SEA it bothers me when i saw someone eat rice with a fork when you have a spoon lying around. my british friend does this too and when i point that out to them they are so confused as it was normal for them. lol
How do you pick other food up?? With a spoon? No a with fork, a fork does it jobs.
Specifically talking about rice here. Using a spoon does a better job.

I'm like, dudes...they put a spoon and fork on the table for a reason. They actually utilize spoons and forks for their food!!! Hello!? Curry? Meat and veggies next to rice on a olate NOT over rice IN A BOWL!?! These are things ppl don't actually pay attention to. But it's cool...who cares? as long as it falls into the mouth somehow. If you want to get real technical, filipinos eat with their "hand-shovels" as well, Indian and Arab style.
or when chinese uses chopsticks but shoves the bowl in their face so they can push the rice into their mouth. what i'm saying is, different people different culture.
I'm from the Philippines and it's nice to see appreciation about our cuisine. A lot of people hate on Filipino cuisine but they should know that we have any kind of pork dish anywhere. Hahaha.

It's also suspicious how the restaurant is called Silog (see-LOHG; fast and abrupt end as well) yet no mention or appearance of SInangag (garlic fried rice, very yummy!) and the itLOG (egg in English) is just plain hard boiled, its supposed to be fried sunny side up. The point of SI-LOG is the combination of the garlic fried rice and egg plus tradditional breakfast meat like LONG-GANISA (just sausage) or TAPA (fried vinegar marinated beef). So the combos will be TAP-SI-LOG (tapa+sinangag+itlog) or LONG-SI-LOG (longganisa+sinangag+itlog). There's fusion then there is also muddled vague reference to a cuisine.

Filipino food has very strong and at times unforgiving flavors. To see someone modernize the cuisine and put their own spin on it, is amazing. It's another stepping stone to someday elevate and refine Filipino cuisine to a whole new level. I look forward to the day, when Filipino food is sought after, and the cuisine is maximized and refined as a true art. I hope someday it will reach that level. But for now, I'm just happy to see someone using these familiar ingredients, and maximizing it to maximum flavor. Wish you more good fortune and success, to the Filipino chef breaking new ground with us food.

- relyenong bangus
- liempo
- tokwa at baboy
- dinuguan
- bicol express
- kalderetang kambing
- halayang ube
- leche flan
- halo-halo
- buko pandan
- etc... etc... etc...
don't just focus on adobo and sisig alone... but you can't go Filipino without them...
don't really intend to hate but:1) I wonder how much each of those meals cost. Silogs are meant to be the original Filipino fast food. They are the staple menu in small time eateries. So they're not actually meant to be sophisticated or expensive looking.
2) as a capampangan, the sisig is such a letdown. pork belly? chicharon? mayonnaise? where's the sisig in that?
3) calls the restaurant Silog, only one meal presented comes with egg (itlog) and rice (sinangag). is the rice even at least fried?
I don't want to hate the guy, but he should ask his mom and Lola first if he's right about anything.
regardless, I applaud the presence of the Filipino cuisine in the States. I just hope it stays true to the nature of silog's simplicity and not be some kind of hipster haven that makes people look cool when they eat there.
Being a Filipino, I tend to cringe at the idea of Filipino "fusion" restaurants. To me it's a dumbed down version of our cuisine, but you can't really blame the guy for trying to cater to a larger western audience. It's much like the Chinese inventing sweet and sour, broccoli beef, and chop suey dishes. You just have to give others time to get accustomed to our cuisine before they try the authentic versions.
Jeus Lau Lol we can't really say its a let down its more of an adaptation of Filipino cuisine in a different culture or country. Maybe people in that country will be intrigued and actually increase their curiosity and gradually tasting original Filipino food . For me he's done a good job ! - opinion. The culture of our food is still there ~ its like Filipino food adapted to a new environment
I feel you on the sisig, lol. Had some in Angeles City with my cousins and ever since I've been ridiculously nitpicky about all the other sisig I've eaten.

Yes, please do Indonesian. The country is even bigger and more varied than the Philippines.
but unfortunately, its representatives in the US are very limited and not as prevalent, compared to Filipino, and moreover Thai food. I think there's still some "identity crisis" regarding what cuisines are acceptable to American palate, with such variety and depth.
hate to break it you but PH has 7,107 islands that makes up for hundreds of local dishes.
I'd be glad if Lucas review Indonesian restaurant there.
Plus, should we celebrate that Indonesian and Filipino share lumpia instead? I have at least few Filipino friends that might be glad to know that we share the same food (technically), but we have bamboo shoots and prawn instead of pork hehe
Filipinos also use bamboo shoots and shrimps in lumpiang sariwa or fresh spring rolls. We use crepe wrappers instead of rice paper wrappers.

Hey Lucas, glad to see you hit up my hometown of Torrance. Never heard of this place, but when I still lived in Torrance I worked with a lot of Filipinos. We would frequently go to places in Carson for authentic Filipino food. Anyway, Torrance has fantastic Japanese food, if for some reason you guys get back to LA to film.

Silog - si(sinangag/fried rice) log(itlog/egg). It's a take off from the standard silog, the standard one just usually fried rice/fried egg and either combined with hotdog, tapa (fried veal/jerky)

it is a filipino INSPIRED restaurant. gosh these people commenting are so 2 dimensional. since when does cuisine follow a certain recipe 100%?.... its free to experiment in any way the restaurant owner feels like. my grandma makes adobo differently from your grandma, just like some caucasian person's meatloaf may differ from other meatloafs. i can't believe i have to explain that to some of the people commenting lmao.
I have seen many foreigners ENJOYING "Sisig." The most recent was in a food court in a mall in the Philippines where this, big probably, American man with tattoos, somewhat intimidating, holding a plastic spoon that looked so small and flimsy in that big strong hand and just digging with concentration, like trapped in that moment thing, into the Sisig (big sized one meant for 2 to 3 regular-sized Filipinos). I'm very happy to see them enjoying sisig. I think sisig will appeal to western palates.
absolutely love this place!!!! Affordable too! Parking lot can be full sometimes but the small cross street has parking.
