The story is sad, Maria was born with a fatal disease which is why she is on the ark in the 1st place. The government came to Gerald wanting him to create BIO weapons for them, and he only agreed because he wanted to secretly make a cure for Maria's disease. He started working on an immortality device which is what is on the Bio Lizards back which made it unstable and uncontrollable, so it had to be sealed after destroying part of the ark. When the government found out about this sometime after he started work on Shadow, they became scared that they couldn't control the weapon Gerald was making so they sent G.U.N to shut down the ark and eliminate everyone who worked on it. Maria ultimately gets shot and killed as she launched Shadow's escape pod. Gerald was not aware at 1st that they killed everyone on the ark as he would go to and from earth and the ark for research and wasn't there when it was raided. All he knew was that it was shut down because of an "accident" and everyone was fine. The government now watched Gerald closely as he was finishing Shadow on earth, he finds out what really happened to the ARK and goes insane.
Spoilers for Shadow 2005 if you haven't played it.
Because Gerald was having no luck creating a cure he resorted to contacting an alien species called the Black Arms. Their leader Black Doom agreed to give him his blood to make Shadow if he were to agree to have Shadow bring him the 7 emeralds in 50 years (the black comet they live on comes into orbit on a 50 year cycle). After Doom leaves Gerald realizes his mistake and creates the eclipse cannon so that when Shadow collects the 7 emeralds for Doom he will instead use them to destroy the comet with the cannon. After Marias death he reworked the cannon to where it would make the ark fall to earth when the emeralds were inserted rather than destroy the comet. He also reworked Shadow's mind to forget about Doom and only take revenge on the planet.

I enjoyed watching this series! I feel like missed out by not playing Shadow's origin story as a kid, but getting into the story now works too. I had fun watching you play, even if you did struggle at times. But in the end you still cleared well for someone just getting back into it
This must been one heck of a nostalgia trip for you to revisit Sonic Adventure 2! I highly enjoyed watching your SA2 streams! You made that final boss look easy!
Also, don't let chat try to falter or irritate you. I get that it's hard but I'd say you're stronger than you realise. If I was streaming, I'd have an anxiety attack so props to you for keeping it all together. There is no shame in looking up guides whilst streaming.

No matter how many times I see it, this game's ending NEVER fails to make me laugh hysterically the way Eggman is monologuing to Tails for a minute and Tails just lets all of it go in one ear and out the other, completely ignoring every single word that was just said and responds with that super enthusiastic "We did it together!" to celebrate the big W of saving the day. It gets me every time, lmao.
That's actually because of a mistranslation. What he actually should've replied with is "I don't know, but what matters is that it made us join together."
