    Location: 23rd Street Astoria, Queens.
Friday evening FDNY Queens dispatched units to 23rd Street in Astoria to a reported fire on the 3rd floor of a multiple dwelling. Residents flagged down trucks and directed them into the building. Ladder 117 made their way up to the 3rd floor, found a heavy smoke condition, and transmitted the 10-75 (code for a full first alarm assignment). It took a little investigating to eventually find the fire hidden behind the refrigerator and spreading into the walls. First due Engine 312 stretched a line and began to get water on the fire. This fire was stubborn and made its way from the walls of the kitchen into the buildings cockloft. It even threatened the exposure 4 (building to the right). Aggressive work by all the subsequent arriving companies made sure this fire didn't spread any further. While conducting secondary searches of the house an Iguana was found! After speaking to EMS the Iguana refused medical attention and was returned to its owner.

Question for any FDNY members, and this is in no way meant to be derogatory! At the end of the video I counted 13 firefighters re-racking two and a half inch back on the engine. To explain my point of view, I come from a small dartment where we would only staff two engines and a truck, plus the battalion. At full staffing we had a max of four on each engine, four on the truck, plus the battalion for a total of 13 per shift. We would usually have five to six guys when we re-racked our 5-in LDH. Was it just because the guys were there, and many hands make light work? I'm just curious as to why there were that many guys doing a job that could have been done by just a few. Why didn't a couple of the units pick up and go back in service.

I think the many hands make light work reason explains it best, plus that is a time to chat and recap what went on at the job.

This is the sole reason that you should have renters insurance, if renting, and or home owner insurance.
    Prayers for the all involved.
