I love the little glimpse the records of molly houses gives us into all the myriad worlds of queer practice that have been lost to history. And they sound so fun!
@@rugby1971 I'm using queer here in the broad church sense that encompasses homosexuality but also other non-conforming practices and identities like the cross-dressing and potential transness discussed in the podcast
One of Australia’s best loved “personalities” is Molly Meldrum, he is a real cultural icon, an acknowledged gay man who has been overtly a “Molly” for the last 60+years publicly. This all during the era when homosexuality was still criminal, when “Gay bashing” was still being practised in some places, where being gay was shameful in most areas of life.
I was going to mention Ian 'Molly' Meldrum myself. Glad someone else picked it up. Apparently he had a few trans friends also, who were subjected to awful discrimination because their sexual orientation was socially condemned.
I’ve just found your channel… not quite sure how the algorithm linked adventure motorcycling and military history 🙈😂… anyway this is a gem… time to work through the back catalogue! Thanks for all your scholarship and fun.
The painful irony of this historian talking about how literally EVERYONE used she/her pronouns for Princess Seraphina and then for some reason uses he/him when talking about her 😩
Molly House. Good name for a gay bar or restaurant, if such places haven't become passe' in the Internet Age. Or perhaps a chat room! 😉 Though that probably wouldn't translate well to the U.S., either.

What is transportation in this context? Being shipped off to the colonies?
