      Hi there, it can depend on the type of cactus you have, but if its like the ones in this video and a prickly pear type, you can definitely prune them back to keep them more in shape and compact, the prickly pear Opuntia cacti do well with a good pruning by trimming off the extra hanging pads, thanks so much for watching and have a wonderful Wednesday XXXX

    I’m pretty sure the type of cactus I have is a cereus. I have it in a clay pot it’s not too small of a pot I’m not really sure on the dimensions, but recently my cactus just started turning a bright light green instead of a dark green. It’s now shriveled up and dead. I don’t know if it died from overwatering or not enough sunlight. I leave it on my nightstand which is facing the window, but it’s the only plant in my room that’s not close to the window. I also leave my air conditioner on most of the time so that could be it. It’s lived for about 5 to 6 months and I got it from a lady who had it longer. It’s completely dried out but I recently brought back a vine plant that was dead for over three months and completely dried out and now it’s finally growing back so hopefully my cactus will come back to life as well. If anybody has any tips on what to do. The plant in the video is not completely dried out while mine is.

    Mine is shrivelled and fluffy. Is that a sign of root rot?

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  2 года назад

      Hi Kavya, unfortunately it may be due to root rot, or very possible Mealy bugs as they lay their nests on the cactus and leave woolly fluffy parts over the plant, check over the cactus and its best to remove the cactus from the pot and check over the roots for any signs of root mealy bugs, I hope you can save your cactus, thanks so much for watching and have a wonderful Tuesday XXXX

    My opuntia was getting shrivelled, I check on the roots and had scale infestation, guess the bugs sucked the sap from it :( I don't know if I should cut the damaged part or use water therapy? I already removed all the scale and let it dry up for 3 days.

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  3 года назад

      Hi Martin :-D well done on removing the scale, yes I would remove any damaged parts from the roots and leave the whole cactus unpotted for a few days to allow the roots to heal any parts that had to be cut away, repot into totally dry very well draining cactus soil, and don't water for about 10 days to allow the roots to re acclimatize, if its your Fall / Autumn now it may be best to overwinter this Opuntia indoors warm in a bright and sunny position or window to encourage faster healing, and very lightly water just once a month to encourage the cactus to recover, Good luck with your Opuntia and thanks so much for watching and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful Monday XXXX

    Hi, thanks for this. I tried to pot a cutting from a very old cactus. I cut off a bit of the base and left it to callous over for a few days, then potted with a bit of hormone rooting powder in a cactus potting soil and put a small amount of water in. Sadly, the cutting is shrivelling, drying up. I've added some water and sunk the cutting lower into the soil but not sure what else I can do. Any advice? It feels spongy dry and is a very small cutting, about 3 inches. Thanks

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  3 года назад

      Hi there, so sorry to hear you are having problems with your cutting, it could be because these cuttings can take a long time to root and the cutting may continue to shrivel until it forms roots, if you have any additional heat like a heat mat to place under the cutting pot, this may help to speed up rooting, cactus can take much longer to root during fall and Winter, but I would keep the cutting in a warm bright position away from strong heat and very strong sunshine until it has chance to root, you can lightly mist the cutting to help prevent shrivelling, but still keep the soil mostly dry to prevent rot, the cutting will still root in dry soil, Good luck with your cutting and thanks so much for watching XXXX

    What if my cactus is droopy and like deflated?

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  2 года назад

      Hi Avigail :-D it may be due to the root system either due to not getting enough water or the rots are damaged or have root insect pests like root mealy bug, its best to take the cactus out of its pot to give it a thorough inspection, it can be common for some types of prickly pear Opuntia cacti and Mammillaria types of cacti to grow droopy and this is their normal habit, but with the globular or cereus types of cacti this is not normal and can be due to the roots being damaged or hidden pests and or hidden pests in between the spines, good luck with your cactus and thanks so much for watching XXXX

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  4 года назад +1

      Hi there, yes often Melocacti that are for sale in the shops are potted up in the wrong soils often peat based, this can damage the roots and its best to re pot them into a very well draining cactus soil, I would remove your melocactus from its pot to check over the soil and roots and if the soil is a peat based one then I would re pot it into a cactus soil of 3 equal parts of loam, grit or perlite and sharp sand, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a super Sunday XXXX

      Hi there, Ferocactus can often go yellow and a bit wrinkly shrivelled looking at the base especially as they mature and even when they are still young plants, a lot of my ferocacti are also like this too, if the base is not soft then its normal and you dont need to worry at all :-D thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to Australia for a wonderful Wednesday XXXX

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  Год назад +1

      Hi Michelle :-D Opuntias can go very wrinkled in Winter as they use up their water reserves, and its possible once the Spring arrives and normal watering resumes the Opuntia will fill back up again with water, but if you have your planter indoors in a warm environment it should be safe to give the soil a water to help to prevent the Opuntia from shrivelling any more, you can also remove the Opuntia from the planter to check that there is no problems with the roots, but if I was you I would give your Opuntia a watering and keep indoors in a warm position to encourage the Opuntia to take up water, thanks so much for watching and for your wonderful comment and wishing you a fantastic plant powered Weekend ahead XXXX

    Hey Lyn! I have a Peruvian apple cactus (cereus) columnar cactus and it's about 6 feet tall. During the winter months, I cut it and waited about 8 months to pot it and I put it vertical in a room with no light. I finally potted it in May (I live in southeast US where it's pretty humid) and the plant is light green at the top and not as fat as it used to be.
    I imagine it's used all of its "fat" to feed off of when it was callousing but I can't seem to get it fat again. It's likely shriveled.
    I'm worried about putting it outside in the humidity and my east facing windows I worry arent bright enough for it.
    Any idea of if it was be saved? Should I cut off the shriveled top? The base isn't as shriveled. Thanks for this video!
