  • NRs have been one of Australia's most important engines, hauling freight across the country for nearly 30 years for National Rail and Pacific National. The class produces 3,000 kW (4,000 hp) and hauls all kinds of cargo, from Steel to Intermodal Containers, along with Australia's most famous passenger trains, like The Ghan, Indian Pacific, and Great Southern.
It's April 2023 in the northern parts of South Australia, and this video captures several Pacific National Trains hauled by NRs, including empty and loaded steel trains, an east-west transcontinental Intermodal, and the legendary Ghan.

Cross the plains, West of Port Augusta, Pacific National Steel Train 7YN2 rides the rails of the Whyalla line towards Spencer Junction. Indian Pacific liveried locomotive of NR29 paired up with NR2 on the loaded service.
Led by two Pacific National-liveried NRs, the legendary 4-Day Ghan Expedition crosses Lake Knockout after departing Port Augusta bound for Adelaide, operating behind schedule.
The Flinders Ranges make for a magical backdrop behind Pacific National transcontinental Supefreighter 6MP4. The service crosses Lake Knockout, heading west into Spencer Junction, where the two drivers will be swapped for a crew of four, with two resting in the crew van and two driving. This service operates from Melbourne across the country, over 3,500 kilometres to Perth.
Twin NR's of 20 & 43 head downgrade into Gladstone with all empty 5NY3, apart from a few logs at the front. The empty service operates from Newcastle on the east coast to the Whyalla Steel Works in South Australia.
After the empty service is clear, Pacific National loaded service 7YN2 departs Gladstone with a fresh NR61 leading NR83. The loaded service operates in the other direction from the Whyalla Steelworks, taking Steel to Sydney and Newcastle, with some loading being further distributed to Brisbane and Wollongong.

Great distance video of 6MP4. Seeing the car transporter wagons with presumably new and used vehicles brings me to the point of bringing vehicles into Perth. A family member runs a car dealership and tells me some used models are a lot cheaper in the east and they do quite nicely with that difference even with the freight charges.
The big 2 supermarkets here still have their stock shortages signs up with gaps on the shelves.
Do not think there is any solution to the flooding washaways. Too many kilometres of track.

      Thanks mate! Glad you enjoyed.
Interesting to hear that! I never really knew about the cars and had always wondered if they were new or used. I wonder if like containers, heading west they charge more than east if the majority of demand heads towards you guys.
Shouldn't take long now for the supermarkets to catch up. Been plenty of freight moving across since the line opened. My father, Steve who also runs this channel has been out on the Trans Australian Railway and has said most trains are almost full length with no empty flats. As for the flooding, seems it was a pretty much impossible to prevent. Half a meter of water at Rawlinna after the dumping with all the building flooded too is a rare case of extreme weather. There's certainly sections they could better protect from damage but the whole line as you said is too long.
