The Himalayan Favela 🇳🇵

  • ■ HIMALAYA, NEPAL: Right on the border between lower and upper Mustang, in what is known as the dessert of Nepal, sits a remarkable little village. It looks more like a favela than a village or town. Where one house ends and the other begins is impossible to discern. The rooftops and alleyways blend into one another so you never really know when you're walking on someone's rooftop or an actual alley.
It's essentially a village with the aesthetics of the favelas of Rio de Janeiro high up in the Himalayas. Naturally this was something I had to investigate.... but how do you get to this Himalayan Favela when all you see is a sign but no path?
That was no easy task... especially seeing as I started of (as usual) with a horrible wrong turn which turned out to be a near fatal mistako..... 😵

I've watched HB from the beginning of his ventures. There have been countless times when I've cringed with my own adrenaline shooting to my toes as he scales those rock cliffs, swims rough waters, rides on various contraptions and spends the night in total strangers homes. Harold Balder is a modern day super hero whom defies the deadliest of snakes, ferocious carnivores, and gut-wrenching illnesses. Harold Balder is a "real-life" Indiana Jones. Keep on sir Harold, you my friend are quite the Superstar! Come to Arizona again and you've got yourself a huge Porterhouse compliments of me. Safe travels good sir!

That last shot was INCREDIBLE - in one shot - you have a desert mountain, a greenery mountain, and at the very end, a snow mountain !!! You do NOT seen that everyday - 3 different mountains all visible with 3 different climates and ecosystems. AMAZING !!!

      - ... and in Nepal were forced by the government to pay for against your will... so it wasn't even your choice to bring the movie spoiler to begin with 🤦🏼‍♂
If it wasn't like that I would've continued further up this valley as this is the last episode. I cannot go further without a guide and paying $1300 dollars. I'd be happy to pay that money as a protected nature reserve fee or whatever they want to call it but I do not want some dude telling me what hill I can and cannot climb because it may be a risk to my personal safety.
So now hundreds of thousands of people who would've loved to see the beauty of upper Mustang (and possibly afterwards travel there themselves) here on my channel will now not see it.
Local businesses will not be promoted and the Didi of upper Mustang and potentially many other deserving business owners just like her will not be found. Forcing guides upon people in safe well known paths and roads where Nepalis can walk freely without any experience is a joke and incredibly damaging for tourism.

The COOLEST thing about this village is that it's actually made out of surrounding elements! Just imagine a group of people just decided to stay there and a village was started from the single rock. People really don't need much to survive. Just a simple shelter and a few goats. And actually they will be healthier just drinking goat milk and eating dried apples. Modern people are sick because of excess. Things like cheetoes and soda drinks...

Harald, I've never told you this, but after watching your videos for the past few years, even your appearances on Bald's channel, you've changed so much in terms of your whole aura and spirit... in a GREAT and POSITIVE way... I can't put my nail on it, but you're glowing with such a happy and buzzing spirit. That child like wonder and zeal for life. I think in the past, you seemed a bit more reserved and quiet at times. But these trips to the Himalayas, you seem the most passionate and happy I've ever see you. And now you bring that with you to all the other cities you visit around the world. I thought I would just point out as an objective observer, you've grown so much as a person, and I respect that so very much.

Certainly didn't expect to see such a beautiful town after seeing the initial wasteland that looked almost otherworldly! Also Mr. Ronaldo really channelled the entirety of his German heritage with those house invasions! Another banging vlog and awesome and friendly people! This man doesn't miss!

Harald just casually walked in a family home, invite himself on a tour while shooting a video. He even accomplished to let random family members film his dangerous stunts in their home. I love it. Great videos Harald.👍🏻👍🏻

I really like this series, love seeing how the people live in these villages very interesting, i know harald will bless the people of nepal just by being interested in their lifestyle ,althoug ive got some ideas for some gifst you could bring these villagers on your next voyage, In europe we have really nice high quality tools that these people probably don't have acces to for instance , a HELLE knife (made in norway), A nice folding saw like a Silky brand, A nice rechargeable flashlight like a Nitecore or Fenix. or just any high quality tool that would last them a lifetime, And get Sunil some Fjallraven pants he earned them and will never wear jeans again. and my apology for invading the comment section

Fascinating video once again, thanks for that and keep up the good work! One question: are the bushes that can be seen at about 12:30 and 45:20 with yellow/orange berries some kind of sea-buckthorn (tindved) or are they some completely different type of plant?

Wow those buildings are magnificent just to think that native people in the American south west lived just like people here in the Himalayas building and living with what the land has to offer those building were like the ruins of the Anasazis they made two story building also with entrance hatches up top and down the ladders to there homes also have storage for weaponry food and supplies they needed to live in almost same rugged terrain some date back to over 500 years or more just WOW good exploring Harald
