- Kind of a long winded session here - but we were having "phun"!Ran out of fuel ~ 15:18 - make no mistake, this saw sucks it up, needed to verify the appropriate length to buck ~ 13:00, threw a chain, and blew the retaining washer, battling the bark ~ 9:00, and making everyone seasick ~ 18:05/07 with the attention getting maneuver, etc., etc. Well,,, it was the day after a Monday that went pretty good.....
A special thanks to Mr. Munster for allowing me the opportunity to use his saw as the guinea pig test unit. As stated, I had some pistons made because there are some things going internally on that were not conducive to longevity, overall operating efficiency, and making good power. So, I this zipkit gets a new one.
I did "kilt" quite a few trees with this saw over a couple of tree killing sprees with the alternate slug. One thing I failed to mentioned is that I started concocting my own mix oil blend. This saw has quite a few tanks run through it so I curious to see what Mr. Munster has to say about the performance.
From my perspective, and as stated, this saw "barks".
I'm currently available for custom saw modification/s. If you are interested, please shoot me an email.

Thanks for watching.
I like the way that saw sounds.
After running a lot of ported saws that didn't live up to expectations and building a few myself, this one surprised me. It is every bit the animal it seems like in this video. Due to weather I haven't put as much time on it as I wanted so it's still pretty rich with a VERY noticeable burble at high idle and it absolutely destroys this cherry I'm working on. Very happy with it so far. I'm hoping the weather cooperates and I can get some hours on it real soon so we can see how these new pistons hold up, but I expect them to do well compared to the factory set up even at this power level.
Always look forward to your vids, Jack, thanks for the upload!
Hey Jack. I am 68 years and live in Clinton, MS. Machinist an welder by trade. Anyhow when in my 20s I traded for an old Mac 14” May have been a mini Mac with manual Oiler an auto. Plugged the manual. Cut a lot of 18 to 24” red oaks to sell for firewood. I still have that saw and a newer Mac a Stijl and a 24” husky455. Cant get parts for the macs of course. After felling probably 350 to 400 trees over the years mostly red oaks I’ve learned something new from almost all your vids. Worst scenario ever had was a 36” oak in front yard with two larger trees between it and a power line. Had a nice clear spot to lay it into the yard toward pond. Notched it an started back cut ha couple wedges in the cut. Almost through when a freak puff of wend caught the umbrella and picked it up and set it off the stump about three feet and top fell in tree behind it. No videos to consult back 20 plus years ago so I started sawing 22” firewood off the bottom letting it fall sometimes 5 to 10 minutes later until the canopy untangled an fell safely beneath the other trees. Whew! Was I worn out. And my hand is worn out from all this typing on my phone. Any way by the Grace of God it all worked out. God bless and continue to keep it safe.
Anthony hi. Thanks for the story. Dealing with trees, sometimes "things" just happen. Glad you were able to live through the process.
I've been in those senarios a number of times myself. Only by His grace do we make it through.
Thanks for watching.
Enjoyed that video. That saw is a beast.
Very good Runin saw sir
Man that saw rips!! Nice job on it Jack!👍🍻
Thanks.
hotsaws101 hey got a question. I got a new rancher 460. I prob could have gotten a pro saw, but the rancher is really light. Is it possible I cd mod this thing and squeeze more power out of it? Rumor has it they’re built differently and are a pain to work on at that level. What do ya think?
I started logging in the late 60s into the late 70s on the n.coast around gualala up into ft Bragg wow that was something that part of my life, made the best friends still friends to this day, still have buddy that still topping trees he's 75 shit you not.thanks for your video brings bsack a lot of good memories and some not so good...hahaha
Robert hi.
My pleasure and thanks for watching.
Thanks for the ride along Jack!
Another great video Jack. Love the helmet cam. Your right saw rips. Love to get my hands on a 372 that you have done your magic on. The bomb for firewood.
I talk to Patrick about every day and he's tickled pink with the 461 test mule you built for him, he cut a bunch of wood a few days ago and said it would scare a 660 into bowin up and defending itself........I can't even imagine what a saw like that would feel like in hand lol
Woos 31 I’ve got JB 461r that’ll run with or better a stock 661 wielding a 20” bar ... Just the “extreme” version not the Psy-Ko but I did install a max-flow and an unlimited coil - well pleased with it
@@fabzacres-blackcat nice, I'd bet that saw is fun to "surprise" people with lol
Woos 31 hi ! I’m not a saw-racer by no means ; the saws used for that endeavor like 2pc heads, expansion chamber pipes and usually drink methanol and run “modified” sqr/sqr chains --I use da Hotsaws101 461R for occasional tree work ; firewood processing and heating the homestead ... IF you have the work the initial outlay on Jacks’ mods is quickly recouped and then you have the enjoyment of running a saw that’s Considerably quicker than stock ! I’ve done some “modifications” of my own and have gotten good gains but also have made errors in the process ... Jack has been at this game FAR longer than most and builds a strong saw - one way or the other You have to Pay for experience; whether you pay a school or on the job - there is no “free lunch” imho
@@fabzacres-blackcat you're absolutely right sir, I hadn't thought of it in such terms as you pay for someone else's hard learned knowledge, or pay to receive it yourself..........
Woos 31 yeppers ... experience is a hard teacher as she gives the test first, the lesson later
Saw is an animal jack. Nice work!
I sure miss the redwoods. God bless you to.
Thats workin like a boss jack.
You definitely know what yer doing...nicely done 🙂👌
Atta-Boy Jack Keep tossing em!
Seems like you really like the 461. Weight to power is awesome.
That was a good one Jack !
WOW! My 461 dont sound or cut like that. That is a SWEET saw. What do I gotta do to get that kind of performance? Thank you for sharing with the community
James hi.
Spend 15/30 years working on saws. Spend a lot of time thinking about alterations. Spend a lot on the tooling necessary to do altering. Spend a lot in R&D on the experimentation process.
All this comes after you had a decent understanding of what it takes to make an engine run better.
Or,,,, you could just hire a guy that already knows what to do and can.
Thanks for watching.
I searching for Stihl 441, standard or m tronic? I have had negative experiences with EPA diesel pickup and EPA wood stove, I think I have an EPA phobia.
Boy does it ever rip!
Sure missed watching your vids !!
Thanks
What's the max bar length and chain you would put on a stock 461
Liam hi. Bone stock down to the needle limiters? How sharp is the chain? Are you a patient man while sawing? What is elevation are you working? Believe it or not, the mix oil will come into play.
On a personal level, I won't take a stocker off the landing and don't have much experience with them other than saw-off videos.
Thanks for watching.
Does it use more fuel than the stocked version or is it more efficient.
Maybe I'm asking does a slow kettle use less energy than a fast one .
Thanks
Liam hi. They get superb fuel mileage once zipped as long as the chain is sharp. I can fell and buck between 20 and 40K on 1.25 to 1.5 gallons of fuel.
Thanks for watching.
Hey Jack. Do you think you will ever use two cameras? Hard to see the lay of the land and the set of the tree with the helmet cam always moving. Keep it safe and God bless.
Anthony hi. Maybe. That's an editing nightmare. I'm already am working on one. Packing a tripod & camera around is a bit of a pain - I use to do a lot.
Thanks for watching & blessing to all in your camp.
Back at it jack ,i have a ms311 is it possible to a insane o job on it
good show!! thx.
Great video, really enjoyed the saw and demonstrations, I felt like I was right there bucking up logs with ya! If I bought a new 462, is there anything you can do with a new one or do you need some "miles" on it before customization? Thank you sir
Hi Jack ! Any particular reason why you did an “East Coast” face cut as opposed to a humboldt like the majority of your videos show ?
This was kind of a landscaping operation so I wanted a low stump. I think the low, flat stumps look more appealing. And I wanted the stump to heal in a little bit since this tree was getting blasted across a rock hard, rock road.
Right-0 !
That’s a real life scenario. Running out of gas and saws breaking. It happens lol 🤷♂️
Sparks flying at 10:41.
Out of curiosity do you always run your customer's saw on a worksite before you send it back to them?
Not always. Part depends on the customers request. Part comes from if something cool comes up at the same time I have a saw. Part comes from whether or not I find that a particular saw is unique or "cool".
Thanks for watching.
In this case HOTSAWS and myself agreed to run the saw for a lot of different reasons. Using my saw for a little cutting was done with full knowledge and consent.
Stack em up!
Jack Based on your previous video on what one should look for in a mix oil, I went to the Motul 800. Is there something better off the shelf that I should consider?
OXB Koastie hi. In a nut shell: Viscosity - film strength - is paramount. Density - especially when considering the new smog design engines - is paramount. Chemical make up of the oil - is also paramount. Synthetic oils coat completely differently than petroleum oils - paramount. The flash point is less so but is a good indicator of the oil's stability. Chainsaw engines run 350/450, not ~ 220 like a watercooled machine. I personally like a more stable oil in a saw application because of their operating temperatures. Then there is the part about having seen a "few" saws run on different oils for the real world testing. The data will give a good indication but the use tells the tale.
It would depend somewhat on the application. With only a partial on the parameters it's pretty much impossible to have any legitimate input. Thanks for watching.

Hi Jack ! Having built/run both a Psy-Ko SS 462 cm and the 461 shown in this video, what are your thoughts Performance-wise of old (461) vs new (462cm) school ? (I’m assuming they are both equally modded) ... thank you !
I thought he did a video on the differences?
d hamby and it was a good un
d hamby hi ! A bench talk / tear down video was done indeed ... My ? Was in regards to how each saw (462 and 461) performed in live action in comparison to each other (assuming equal mods ie Psy-Ko SS zipkit on both saws
@@fabzacres-blackcat hi. So I managed to knock out about 400,000 with the 462 running between a 28 and a 34 inch bar. I tried full comp semi Skip and full skip change through the process. Balance wise I like the saw with a 30-inch Oregon lightweight. It seems to handle full comp chain with a seven tooth Rim sprocket with that length of bar nicely. To answer your question directly, it won't even beat up on my standard Psy - KO 440/ 044. The 462 is just about as far as a guy can go. The 440 has one more level left. The 440 won't keep up with the 461 all things equal. I did run the 572xp against the 462 RCM against the 461 in this video. With the 461 having the alternate piston I had made, exponentially less run time on it than either of the new kids, and running rich. Yet, it easily beats them both. I used a 110 driver bar as well. The 572 & 462 ran about the same, except, I pulled pretty hard on the 572's pistol grip about 2/3s of the way through the cut. I was trying to get a feel for how the 572, with its much longer stroke , would hunker down and pull once you apply some pressure to The Handlebar and/or pistol grip. With the way I have my chains set up (I like them to feed) this causes a little slow down.
The 462 has definitely an application if you're going to be running a little bit shorter bar (I consider the balance aspect as well) and you're going to be doing a lot of movements AKA heavy limbing or you're working in a serious brush patch. As long as you don't get too long of a bar on it and you're going to be golden.
The 461 has more power anywhere in the RPM range so the grunt factor is much better considering a longer bar or harder wood. The 462 is way more maneuverable because of its light weight but it lacks the low, mid-range, and top end power - it's an insta R kind of machine that has pretty good power.
hotsaws101 Hi Jack ! Kinda figured the 461 would come out on top based on your comments and personal observations ... curious about the piston swap you made mention of - if it’s proprietary and the info needs to stay behind the shop walls I completely understand ... the 461 Psy-Ko SS in this video is a ripper ; me likey !
What is your favorite chainsaw ?
Вадім Кухарчук hi. That "wood" depend on a few parameters. Application and cc class being two of those. Bar length being another.
The 064 is a pretty good "allrounder" though.
Thanks for watching and hope your New Years is good.
@@hotsaws101 Thanks, let the New Year give you only good
That saw in the beginning sounds like one of your creations ?
TJ hi. I'm not following your line of thought in this question.
hotsaws101 is that saw in the very beginning something you modified?
Are you referring to the saw that threw the chain ?
Fabzacres yeah I guess so... the saw that’s running in the the first min or 2 of the video
@@tjlovesrachel hi. The saw that I start a around the 3 min mark is the Psy-Ko SS 461 mention in the title. The 660 that's on the stump around the 20 min mark is the one that blew the retaining washer. That's saw was Dennis's machine.
Hope I answered your question.
blue bar oil?
It is a little golden/green. The new Husky bar oil. Far superior to its predecessor and the regular Stihl choice.
👍
What , no 288xp for comparison ? Lol
Clayton hi. I have one that's getting the psy-ko zipkit just as soon as my nose resurfaces again. I'm considering using some ceramic hybrid bearings in it as well.
Thanks for watching.
The camera person is moving around so much it makes me dizzy & sick.
Camera is on his hard hat that’s why
He's a one man multi tasking machine. Plus he says he's not the boss but he sure has to keep everyone else straight. Including the boss. Your gonna have that.
1000 dollar port job possibly
What's the deal with the mix oil "concoction" you mentioned?
Eric hi. I like certain things in mix oil. I cannot find one that has all the best qualities. So I decided to start blending my own. I've been testing my concoction for a while now. Seems to do pretty good. Thanks for watching
I just run the motul 800 and if I have to Stihl synthetic or golden spectro
Eric Husqvanson Swanson - I would use the Bel-Ray H1-R before either of the two you listed off if I was in a pinch. Thanks for watching.
Does this guy even know how to fell a tree,I am not so sure
Todd Lauer Hi Todd. This feller knows more about felling than most fellers. This isn’t a pride show because he intends by God’s Grace to fell a tree the next day. Keep it safe.
I recommend to you STIHL Timbersports, if you wanna watch speed cutting without any risk involved.
In the forest safety 1st.
Have a nice day.
2nd!
the most punchable voice in trees
Junior Kong ?
Hush woman. Men talk here
anyone that runs a 2 cycle out of fuel is braindead. big no no.
Jack has forgotten more about 2 cycles then most will ever know. Not the best of practices but it happens as far as fuel. Saws fresh and rich. She'll be fine.
nolan kinzie Hi Nolan. Been running them out all my life. Never seizes a piston yet. In fact I always run out any machine I’m gonna set up for awhile.
