I’m really sorry for your loss. Unfortunately, I had been worried something like this would eventually happen with Joey, after watching her ongoing chasing behaviour. I can tell she has herding instincts, but they weren’t being directed properly around the birds, and her chasing of livestock often became too aggressive or playful instead of just herding. Livestock guardian dogs and herding dogs (or any dog for that matter, even family pets) should never be allowed to play with or chase the livestock, unless they are being directed by their human to herd them. Herding dogs should not be allowed to herd livestock unsupervised. And any dog should never be left unsupervised with livestock unless you are sure they are completely stock proof. There isn’t anyone to explicitly blame or point fingers at in this situation, and doing so isn’t helpful; I mean, everything with Joey had been fine so far, so it wasn’t something expected, and the duck was also known to be aggressive and possibly an instigator. But this is an opportunity for learning and preventing another death. Joey and the livestock should not be allowed to interact unsupervised now that there’s a known risk, and some of her rules around interacting with them should tighten. She should not be allowed to play with or chase any animal anymore unless specifically herding supervised. If she can’t be controlled verbally around the animals, then she should stay leashed until she can be. I think it would also do her good to do some proper herding training with her, to direct her energy positively, make her into a helpful partner, and improve her manners around the livestock. Good luck with everything, and I hope you don’t have anything like this happen to you guys again!
I mostly agree with you but I do think it's their fault, they filmed the dog running a chicken into the fence several times in this video… That was stupid just by itself. Maybe they think a dog terrorizing a chicken is playful in the chicken enjoys it.
@@FynnOliverEmonSill I agree, but it is very hard to read a message like the one above when you are grieving for your animal. (Hence the reason I have no content on my channel. I have a tender heart.)
@@FynnOliverEmonSill Look, I tend to agree, but harshly blaming people is not the way to inspire them to make a change. Calmly teaching and explaining is.
Those maggots probably helped him survive that first night prior to your skilled treatment. Maggots eat away at infected tissue and were clinically used for centuries to prevent and treat infection. Gross but actually very helpful in the right circumstances! Birds, especially aggressive ones are so hard to manage and as poultry they are so difficult to treat. Such a good job done ❤
I don’t think Joey needs to be rehomed or put down but I’m not sure she’s trained enough to be near the poultry. We used to tell my Newfie to “get” the chickens and he killed one. It was our fault entirely. That was the last time he was near the chickens.
Don’t think any dog should be put down because of behavioral issues. Maybe a reality check for the dog by introducing a bigger more experienced dog to put the younger one in line
It's not Joey's fault. It takes a very specific breed of dog trained and proven to be trustable around poultry. I'm frankly surprised this didn't happen sooner. Poor Junior.
even the best trained of the breeds used for poultry can end up doing this. it is sad and something many of us do not want to deal with or have happen but it does happen and many times the only thing to do is retrain or rehome the dog. in extreme cases the dog needs to be put down. joey just needs more training
Dogs are predators/scavengers by nature. Make sure you continue to hold yours tight and give her all the love you can. Sometimes they make mistakes and we don't notice. You guys can only do your best. Much sympathy and love. Best wishes for the little eggs.
I'm so sorry for your loss of Junior, at the beginning of the video I started praying for him. Not knowing that he didn't make it. All of your family cares so much for your animals, I know it's tough on all of you when you lose one. The way things happened, I don't think anyone can be blamed. I really enjoy your videos, the way your whole family is involved in caring for the animals and the fact that your children have such Love for the animals just as you and your wife do. May God bless all of you.
I think Joey should be trained. Ducks are territorial and they love their space, its a normal behavouir honestly. I had ducks too for years, its mating season
@@AmberGibson-qg6yhdid they give up? Why did they get that breed then. Did they not know they need a lot of training and time? They have 4 kids and a bunch of birds, they shouldn’t have gotten a energetic breed like Joey if they didn’t have the time to train him. It’s sad.
@@kristine123abc Couldn't agree more. Laying blame on a dog, an animal that's supposed to be trained by their owner, just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
Please protect your current hook bills, keep Joey away. If I got the opportunity to keep an endangered animal they would be so protected they are precious. Sorry for your loss
Teaching Joey not to touch the livestock is essential. With consistent training and positive reinforcement, Joey can learn boundaries and develop self-control, ensuring a safe and harmonious coexistence with the livestock. Investing in training now brings long-term benefits for Joey's behavior and the well-being of all involved.
They are actually terrible at livestock management in general. They have one of the rarest, endangered domestic duck breeds and they let things like this happen. Nor is this the first time. They "lost" most of their flock a few years ago, didn't they? They either don't respect their animals or they are extremely ignorant of how to manage them and protect them. It's a waste of resources. All these views and subscribers supporting a farm that's run like this
@@leftunsupervisedyes it happened with a predator a year or so ago (I can’t remember exactly). The videos are getting hard to watch with the over stocking, not training their dog, too many projects, unsuitable enclosures etc.
@@spyroeskimo Not to mention how many times they've killed their bees. One video showed them opening the hive on a very cold day to "check" on them. I couldn't fathom it. They were worried the bees weren't doing okay in the cold so they literally opened the hive thus sealing the fate that the bees would, in fact, die of cold exposure. It's absurd. So many good conservationists and farmers are out there, and these people are the ones with the massive subscriber count.
I'm sorry for your loss. I used to own a border collie before I got chickens. As much as I loved her, I never trusted her around my birds. Like your Joey, herding dogs have an instinct that can get the better of them. Like your Joey, my dog wasn't properly trained so I never trusted her so I made sure my birds were protected from her. Hopefully your loss will be a lesson learned. I also hope that something positive will happen with Joey so she learns to become a better dog so this doesn't happen again.
Australian shepherds are herding dogs they love to chase and nip and that don't bode well for birds. With herding dogs there is a fine line between chase and attack and some don't just chase. He does either need to find a home where he is not a farm dog or the farm does not have fowl or be kept as a house pet away from the fowl. So sorry for your loss. I have lived that many times. Don't beat yourself up just learn from it and make adjustments
Letting *any* dog run loose in a farmyard among its natural prey without making sure it's fully trained and trustworthy is like leaving a burning torch in your kid's bedroom and just hoping for the best. Training LGDs takes serious effort and commitment.
Thank you, for sharing these moments with us. You handled this really well. I think it’s wonderful that you’re teaching the kids to be compassionate in the animals death. God bless your family.
05:04 In the end, it doesn't matter what we think, or what you've done after the fact. These things happen all the time on farms, or rural properties. Joey isn't to blame, and Junior isn't either. I'm sad that he succumbed to his injuries, but if he'd been living in the wild, he wouldn't have made it even this long. I have a lot of respect for your bird & animal rearing practices, and I believe you ought to just keep doing what you're doing, learning as you go, like we all do. Take care of yourselves, and your kids, and know that you are well-regarded. Warm regards from Ontario, Canada. 😊😘🤗❤👍👋
The fact is Joey needs/ needed as a puppy proper structure around birds which was not provided to her, she wasn't taught how to act properly just told "no" from the videos I have seen
@@brutibear1423 There was a video that was about getting Joey trained within their area. What happened caused them to have to resort to doing the best training they could at that time. It's not their fault that the trainers in the area are a piece of crap.
I've lost birds and doggies and people in all sorts of heart breaking ways. It stinks, and i've prayed and sent messages just like you. My heart is tender as you and your family's are. I'm praying for our birds, our doggies, our cows, our hearts, and hoping God has a special place for all his sweet creatures.
Im not a farm girl but I am an Aussie girl. There are no gray areas (like playing with "the herd") with these strong herd drive worker dogs. This stuff happens. I had the advantage of learning from others' experience. I would not judge. Farming, as with anything, is a learning experience. Joey's behavior can be adjusted. Some of the comments are just terrible. Keep living, learning and growing. 🥰
So sorry that you lost your beloved duck. Watching your family life, how you and Becky work together, and your children growing next to you is a great pleasure. Homeschooling your children, they learn and play next to you as you work is the most ideal way to raise and nurture children. I admire you greatly for building and doing largely on your own projects. It seems rather unreal that a young person knows how to do so much. Thank for sharing your life via RUclips.
I don’t know if y’all walk Joey but, regular exercise is crucial for Australian Shepherds to prevent boredom and destructive behaviors. Despite having a big yard, dogs still need walks to release energy and stimulate their minds. Without proper exercise, dogs may resort to chasing behaviors. By walking your dog regularly, you can fulfill their exercise needs, prevent boredom, and reduce the likelihood of incidents like the one with the duck.
True and not, it all depends on you teaching your dog the rights and wrongs. My Little girl is 2 years old full energy and always jumping and running around and she doesn’t hurt our chickens at all. Weather it’s adult, baby, or juvenile chicks she just goes up to them and lays by them, just a few no’s to them and they listen.
Yep. It doesn’t appear that they do any enrichment with Joey. Dogs are much more complex than chickens and they need more than just a yard. She seems to be overweight as well.. 😕
@@Jesus-re9gp It's important to use positive reinforcement to guide Joey's behavior around livestock. By rewarding good behavior, Joey can learn how to behave appropriately and build a positive association with livestock interactions.
We had a blue Merle Aussie growing up (hence my thumbnail) anyways, she loved to dig… we where contemplating getting a duck but didn’t. The dog was very gentle with our pets (birds, rats, reptiles etc) … such a great breed.
I really hate what happened but you keep failing Joey. She needs to be trained, she is so smart and could be such a great help on your farm. But she Has to learn commands like Leave it! She should never herd/ chase an animal unless she is told to. Her training and reinforcing of what she learns is up to you. If she wants to chase something reinforce good behavior with a ball.
I personally don't think it's the dogs fault or the owners. Dogs have a natural instinct to chase and attack because of their ancestors which are wolves. I personally think that the owners are also not at fault because how was they supposed to know Joey was going to injure the duck like she did. Animals die its a part of life. I'm an animal lover and my favorite animal is a duck. I own 5 ducks and they are my babies but it doesn't stop anaimls from coming in an snatching them. It's life animals die. He's in heaven with all the other hook bills. He's in a better place. I suggest you do some research in dog behaviors because it's really because of pure instinks. You can also tell that they really care about their animals. And you know his owners feel horrible about what happend
@@The_littlest_flowerIt’s not the dogs fault because it’s instinct, but it’s still the owners fault. It’s their responsibility to train away instinct, and they shouldn’t get upset when their lack of responsibility has consequences. It’s natural instinct for pitbulls to attack small prey like little children and other dogs, so it’s okay?
Some dogs are "red line" excited when going after prey. They don't even hear commands to "leave it". Keep this type of dog away from fowl, or re-home it.
We had an Americana hen that got attacked by a neighbors dog. It tore the skin and feathers completely off her back end. She healed from it but would not stay in the fence so something ended up getting her. No matter what you do things happen sometimes. So sorry JR. didn't make it.
@@SelenaHall-ye5vk She bred true I just forgot how to spell it LOL! Americans versus Americana? You hit the wrong key I don't feel like an Easter egger!😆 Misspelled, we all make mistakes.🙂
Bye Junior. Sending hugs to all of you. I love you all & know this is sad but you all are beautiful to your animals. Don’t be hard on yourselves. This is life. x
Rebecca from Oregon here🌻I’m sorry for your loss, I love how much you love each and every animal, big or small, and treat them with such respect all the way to the end of the lives. Think you’re a wonderful family and I love the way you’re raising your kids! I look forward to all your videos!!
Fully agree with the comment above me. Burying an animal that you allowed to die a horrific death is not loving and respecting them. Allowing your dog to chase your birds and do nothing about it is not loving and respecting them. These people should not have animals until they learn to actually care for them properly.
Jake, I’m sorry for the loss. It hurts; I know. I have a few encouraging words for you. First, y’all are doing a great job with the kids exposing them to the harsh realities of life on a farm; they’ll love passionately while remaining level-headed. Second, your situation is unique concerning your location, Joey, vets, etc. You’re vulnerable with your audience while maintaining a tough skin. There are recliner coaches in every field; ignore them and their thoughtless comments. You make calculated plans as you move forward there. Not everything works the first time and you grow from it. Keep moving forward in that same way. Your needs are special and it might be time to employ a dog that is specially trained to help you with the fowl while keeping Joey closer with the cows and the family. While this was not a very pleasant video for you to make, your edits and presentation drew me in, captured my attention and then caused me to feel the hurt and pain that y’all have experienced with the loss of other pets and most recently Junior. You’ve grown a lot in that area! Whatever you decide you need to do as a next step, I have no doubt that you and Becky will discuss and come to the best decision that’s right for y’all. Blessings, brother.
I just watched a couple days ago an equine vet draining an abscess on the neck of a donkey. She was left at the end with an open wound of a fair size. To avoid maggots she finished her treatment with a big coat of cornstarch all over the open wound. She said flies will not lay eggs in cornstarch. So I’d say you have nothing to loose and try it. A box of cornstarch would be enough for re applications as needed to cover the wound. Good luck Dan
Jake and Family, I’m so sorry for your loss. Prayers for comfort and peace and know ya’ll did nothing wrong. Nature can seem cruel. Joey is a sweet protective dog. Love and Prayers for ya’ll. In Christ’s Love, Bitsy 17:50 ❤
I'm so sorry you lost your friend. Its good that you learn how the circle of life works when your young. Your mom and dad are good teachers for life. Feel better soon, time to hatch some more hookbill ducks. God bless you all.❤❤❤❤❤❤
Hard spot to be put in, not knowing. But any tissue loss (retired Vet Tech here) needs to be cleaned properly and thoroughly, most especially from animal bites of any kind, prior to blue-coat, or any topical spray. But most importantly, they need to be seen by a Vet, especially due to the high risk of infections. I understand the closest Vet is an hour away, but your position of guardianship of these animals is to do the right thing, not the easier/lesser thing. Sorry for your loss and good luck in the future.❤ Sidenote: When cleaning a wound, please don't use dirty water, there are plenty of antiseptics you can use. The best way is to make sure you get all the 'dirt' out of the wound, Scrubbing is best, and use Q-tips if you have to, but you really do have to get right in there. 'Dunking' the animal does basically nothing much at all. I hope you don't have problems like this again. ❤❤❤
My GLD got ahold of my salmon faverolles chicken. She got infested so fast with maggots and it was just an awful experience. I could see her tail bone. But she has been so resilient and she is doing well. All dogs will always have some sort of predatory drive. I've worked with them for a decade. Sometimes they just snap but never blame the dog. They are only doing what they are meant for. It happens. Hope all goes well. I love your channel. God bless you guys.
I had this happen before and highly recommend bringing him inside , not an ideal idea but keeping flies off of him prevents maggots and gives him better chances of making it. There’s also a triple antibiotic spray you can put on . I did that and my chicken made it, and when it happened to my chicken you could see everything. It took her about 3 months but she went back to normal
😢got all choked up on this video. RIP Jr. Y'all did the best you could do for him. It's just survival of the fittest IMO. He's not suffering anymore. You loved and cared for him. Nobody's fault, even the dogs.❤
I used to breed birds. When I got "special" eggs, I'd begin incubating them, only putting them under a "ready" hen about a week before hatching. It'd work for the Emu's too. Just let the broody hens sit on random or dummy eggs until it's time for the ones in the incubator to be put under them. Remove the random/dummy eggs, candle to double check if the hen is properly incubating. I did this because if I wanted babies from these special hatchlings, it's better if they are raised by a bird parent until they are almost the size of the parent then they can be moved. This ensures they have the natural behaviors required to raise young without your aid. If they hatch a little earlier or a tiny bit later than the broody hen expects, it's alright. Not that you asked for advice :). I enjoy your videos very much. Thankyou.
so very sorry for your loss. I so hear you on farm life. there are so many hard days yet so many amazing miracles too. I have enjoyed watching your family and how you all are involved with all the aspects of raising animals. your children are having an amazing childhood...thank you for always sharing
You are so brave for putting your whole family's mourning this way, thank you. I just recently lost a fish that was really important to me and it makes it hard to keep fish when that happens. My heart goes out to you guys and it makes me understand that its still worth it and happens to even the best of pet keepers ❤❤sorry for you guys' loss
Hello again, I had committed before the video ended a few minutes ago. Now, having watched until the end. I want to tell you all, that I am very sorry for your loss. I also want to tell you, that the way you showed love and compassion for the loss of your sweet duck ( and other pets) is very beautiful. I am very impressed with how you and your family gave love and meaning to life and death. I also feel your are sharing a great gift with your children, in the way you include them. Sincerely, Audri
Joey has never acted like a livestock guardian dog, I have seen the dog chase animals on multiple occasions. Joey has only ever been a family pet and should never been left alone with or had access to the farm animals.
😢Im so very sorry for yalls duck passing, you did everything that could be..... Joey was only doing her job,I can't believe some folks were subjecting to put him down, absolutely not bc he was as I said just doing his job on the farm but it's totally yours and Becky decisions of what to do about everything.....One thing about the One-N-Only White House On The Hill is everyone of yalls animals are LOVED & CARED for 24/7--365/days a yr.....Some folks can be off the chain but as we all know and that is all animals gets lots of love and each of you work so hard including those precious children!! We need more families just like White House On The Hill in Missouri!! Hang in there and God bless 🙌 each of yall!! Hope yall had a wonderful July the Fourth-2023! ❤️🇺🇸🤍❤️🇺🇸🤍❤️🇺🇸🤍
She definitely doesn’t need to be put down since she would make a great pet for someone. But giving her away is 100% a good option since this is a farm with livestock. Only they know what’s best for them, but in my opinion, finding a new owner for the dog is a really good idea. At the end of the day, it’s a dog, not a human. People need to stop treating animals like children.
It's no one's fault. This situation is animals being animals. But Jake, you have an iron stomach. I can't deal with suffering. My stomach gets queasy. Great job taking care of what needs to be done!
people are saying to put the dog down or don’t put it near the animals but honestly just train him better bro 😭 like aussies are super smart and i know he would catch on immediately
Sorry for your loss of Junior. It's definitely hard at times to balance the animals. They have their own thoughts and feelings. We can train and teach them all we want, but they still have their own mind. I'll share an incident that happened on my little farm. Our dog Midnight grew up protecting our chickens, ducks and goats. Never had any problems until we got this cute Cayuga duck that grew up being a male jerk. He hissed and chased us, the chickens and Midnight. She tried to keep her distance from that duck but one day she was out following me around while doing the water, she wasn't to far behind me when that duck came out running and hissing from under the porch and bit Midnight, she did a quick growl and bit back and in that quick couple seconds ended that duck. It's not like we can discipline a duck, they do what they want and I couldn't discipline Midnight bcz in her mind she was protecting herself. She didn't understand that her one bite could hurt the duck. She was their protector. Accidents happen, even sad ones. I shared this so you can see things do happen, and it's not your fault. Joey obviously wasn't out to kill Junior bcz he was still alive. I think it was a disagreement and just like Midnight, Joey didn't understand that duck bodies are fragile to dog bites. You guys are awesome with your animals. None of them came with the owners' manuals so we all have on the job learning. Sometimes things work out and sometimes they don't.
of course the responsibility is yours. for all your animals. accidents can happen to anyone but the dog should have learned that the duck is no threat to anyone.
I think that it is nature, be natural. It is very heartbreaking, but I think you, your family ( including sweet protective dog, and your duck) were all doing what is natural. I hope you don't even think about putting your beautiful dog down! I also hope that you keep free ranging your feathered family members. I watch your channel because I find that you walk the line of keeping many animals as ( I'm going to say PET'S, but only for lack of better word) and letting them be free, very beautifully! It's my hope you keep doing what you do , the way you do it!! All the while learning along the way. Wishing you and yours health and joy, Audri
Farmer Tyler Ranch says if your hay bale is large, the cows have to pull the hay out of the feeder and much of it falls on the ground. But when the hay bale is smaller the cows can keep their heads in the feeder and far less is wasted. I'll try to find you the link. 💖🌞🌵😷
When a bird is weak or sick electrolytes are crucial. You can even replace the water with Gatorade in a pinch and they often make amazing bounce backs. Keep that tip handy for future cases
It seems to be a theme. Problem animal? Destroy it. Not address that Joey has too high of a prey drive and is unfortunately not trained well enough as a farm dog. This wasn't something unexpected to be honest and I fear that Joey is going to be essentially abandoned by them. Not actual fully abandon on side of the road, but given away, instead of introspection and maybe getting some better training done. A year or so ago they tried to do a board and train with Joey somewhere and there was an incident with the trainee. Just like most videos where something has gone wrong, they blame the other person in the situation, never thinking they could possibly have anything to do with the situation. So it was this random trainers fault and not Joey's that she may or may not have nipped the guy. Then it was the predator animals, where they used an extremely cruel and inhumane trap system and trapped 2 potentially innocent wild animals, caused them some severe suffering for however long they were stuck in the traps, and then shot them. Instead of beefing up the security and safety for their animals, or taking proper responsibility for their animals. Now it's Joey going after Junior. It's not the human's fault for not addressing the issue sooner, whether that be properly training the dog, or properly protecting the duck, or whatever. They let the process happen and are shirking the actual responsibility. Poor animal husbandry, and it sucks Junior had to pay the price, and we await to see what will happen to Joey.
@@madginger3634 I worry the level of protective over the human's Joey has, she is going to accidentally hurt a human, hell, could go after one of the kids. Joey can't tell the difference between "we are playing and screaming because we are having fun" and "he is being a mean brother and beating the crap out of me and I need help". This is the kind of behaviour that leads to serious tragedies and they have 2 VERY small children, and even the older boys aren't that big.
It's not the duck or Joey's fault. Joey was doing what she was taught to do. The duck was protective over its space and mate. It completely comes down to how you house the duck and train Joey which falls on you. Both situations should've been handled way better. You set Joey and the duck up for failure. I've followed you guys for years and will still continue to do so but that doesn't mean your not human and make mistakes. I'm THANKFULL that your transparent as we are slowly setting up our homestead in a rental property with less than 1/4 acre of land so I can learn from your mistakes and many other homesteaders I do follow! Love the videos guys and don’t worry about these crazy absurd comments. You people commenting that act like you’re on the farm everyday with Joey and just know he’s going to attack after watching a short video of their week or month are delusional. That’s what dogs do, they tend to chase animals as they would with a squirrel, rabbit, birds, anywhere people have dogs. They’re doing great with the 200 animals they have. Just watch the videos and enjoy the content or switch to a different one!
the same thing happened with our hen pancake when maggots got into her wound we treated her with proxide and t everyday then the magnets all died and now she's recovering and doing better🐔♥
😢😢 I'm sorry for your lose....I too just lost a bird today my 6 yr old hen was killed by a predator... Seeing this makes me sad but i hope his legacy carries on ❤️❤️❤️
For what I saw in the footage, do not allow any of the animals free range with Joey loose and unsupervised. You would be surprised what wild predators will do in the daylight even when humans are around.
That dog isn’t bird friendly, unfortunately it’s going to continue to happen. A good dog would never attack its poultry or even a herd. The dog was too aggressive with the chicken in the video . Time to keep that dog away from poultry or you’re going to have major issues in loss. My Pyrenees has always been aggressive towards small animals and birds. When he’s in the backyard we do our best to get rid of local birds around by playing hawk sounds. Because I know he’s game driven bad.
I am sorry for the loss of your Junior. I remember when he hatched ❤ I have nothing to say regarding Joey because she is not mine and I do NOT know her. you do and you will do what is best for your family, as always ❤❤❤ ck from Sacramento❤️❤️❤️
I’ve learned from a vet that putting Swat cream first on wounds then coat with corn starch flies and other bugs hate the corn starch and will keep the wounds clean. Corn starch will not hurt the animals in any way. Hope you see this and will help for any other issues that may happen.
Sorry to hear this! I think you need to be easier on yourselves, I really feel when things happen, we react by blaming. Blame is not productive or fruitful! The best way to learn is through experience. Don't be hard on yourselves.
I can't fully blame the dog for what happened to the duck - it felt like it was bound to happen, and sadly a farm animal had lost its life in the process. However, its not a fault on yall for it - you didn't know it was going to happen, and you try your best to keep the farm in a balanced order. I just felt like it was sadly bound to happen given how aggressive the duck was, and how reactive Joey was. And *maybe* yes she might need to be trained a bit more, but she still didn't know better, and might've just been defending the kids as your wife said.
I’m really sorry for your loss of Junior. My heart goes out to all of you as I can tell in the video how much his death was affecting the entire family. You’re absolutely right, that the animals are taken so often entirely too soon from our liars and I want to tell you truth remember all the good things you did for Junior and let the children think on those things to show that death doesn’t seem to be such a frightening and ugly thing. I know it was an easy, but allowing the children to help in the burial process of Junior was really remarkable as parents!! I love this video because it is so family oriented and today as I watched it with tears in my eyes I couldn’t help but think about how fortunate the children are to have you both, mom and dad as parents because of the love of animals. You’re my favorite video to watch. I am truly sorry for your loss and will be praying for your family.
Well crap happens. JOEY'S high energy was bound to get her in trouble sooner or later. Aggressive ducks ( or any critter) usually get themselves in trouble sooner or later as well.
It was not Jolie's fault. She was just doing her job. She more than likely tried to get him to back off and he kept going at her. Aggressive ducks and geese are no fun. Them beaks hurt like crazy.
I’m so sorry for the loss of junior. It’s never easy when something like this happens. Coming from someone who also has chickens, about 100 of them. (Too many) There’s no full proof right or wrong way of doing things. You deal with things as they come along and try to avoid something similar in the future. I know I’ve learned a lot since starting with chickens. I find that you are usually your worst critic. Though, I have to admit that some people in your comments are quite rude. Of course those that are condemning you for the way you raise your animals, must never lose any of theirs. Of course, when any of their animals are hurt or sick, they must run them right to the vet to be saved. Everyone in the comments who ridicule you also do things that are wrong. Everything has gone up in price. We currently have a foster dog and I’ve been looking in to having him neutered and I’m shocked to say that most vets start around 600.00 for neuters now. This is absurd. I understand things have gone up in price, but damn. Most people are priced out of care for their animals, especially avian vets. I’m very sorry, again for your loss. I love watching your videos and you do things as you see fit and for the majority of the time, that works. Occasionally, things happen and you can’t plan for when things go wrong. You can only try to improve things until they go back to normal. I wish you and your family, and your animals, a very good night. Have a nice rest of your week and keep up the great work.
I'm so sorry this happened but I expect it, unless you just don't show training Joey she seems to be an afterthought, training a dog especially for poultry needs to be done young, breeding also plays a big role, the breed is bred to herd sheep and other livestock, I don't know what her line was(parents exct) but I never understood why u got Joey she seems to "help" with chickens but gonna actually hurt them if you aren't there and will chase them, letting it happen means it's gonna be veryyy hard to fix- a dog trainer
For those who haven't managed a large multi-animal farm, I think you should refrain from suggestions and negative comments. You guys obviosly care for your animals using research and vet advice. ❤
Of course it's your fault. You haven't trained Joey properly and you allowed Joey to act like that because you thought She was "playing". That is so irresponsible. And these issues keep happening when you are not paying enough attention. It's not easy to keep this many animals and to be honest You are not doing a good job with it. Too many issues and deaths because you weren't paying attention to the problem before something irreversible happened even though You have been fully aware of the issues going on. I don't know if it's laziness or that you just have too much stuff going on but it's not okay.
Good luck with everything, and I hope you don’t have anything like this happen to you guys again!
yeah
@@NancyBryantIdeas Exactly. I don’t want to attack or upset anyone, just teach and offer (non professional) advice.

Why put down 💀
Are you mentally ill? Put down the dog for what?
@@Morbid.obesity other commentators suggested it
Don’t think any dog should be put down because of behavioral issues.
Sorry for your loss. I know how much y'all care about your barnyard crew. Hopeful for the eggs keeping the line going.❤
I think Joey should be trained. Ducks are territorial and they love their space, its a normal behavouir honestly. I had ducks too for years, its mating season
they tried and gave up
You must not be a very good bird owner. All of my ducks including the drake are very docile.
They tried and she bit the trainer
Please protect your current hook bills, keep Joey away. If I got the opportunity to keep an endangered animal they would be so protected they are precious. Sorry for your loss
Teaching Joey not to touch the livestock is essential. With consistent training and positive reinforcement, Joey can learn boundaries and develop self-control, ensuring a safe and harmonious coexistence with the livestock. Investing in training now brings long-term benefits for Joey's behavior and the well-being of all involved.
You can’t just keep the dog away or joey will never learn how to behave…
Well said 🇺🇸
@@brutibear1423 There was a video that was about getting Joey trained within their area.
That is very true
@@JuJuLotz you are so right, hope they see your comment and use it to their advantage.
It’s their responsibility to train away instinct, and they shouldn’t get upset when their lack of responsibility has consequences. oh yeah, allowing an endangered species to die slowly and painfully due to your negligence is totally showing love and respect. sure.
Very nicely said. I’m of the exact same opinion as expressed in your sentiment.

Facts of life, Joey needs to be kept fenced away from the birds. The dog has way too much fun chasing them and has now stepped off that edge.

Sorry for your loss and good luck in the future.❤
Sidenote: When cleaning a wound, please don't use dirty water, there are plenty of antiseptics you can use. The best way is to make sure you get all the 'dirt' out of the wound, Scrubbing is best, and use Q-tips if you have to, but you really do have to get right in there. 'Dunking' the animal does basically nothing much at all. I hope you don't have problems like this again. ❤❤❤
I’m so sorry about the loss of Junior. Love that the whole family went out and buried him together ❤️🤗

It is always hard. The respect and love you show is the reason I watch your videos.
Thankyou.

She definitely doesn’t need to be put down since she would make a great pet for someone. But giving her away is 100% a good option since this is a farm with livestock.
Wishing you and yours health and joy,
Audri
Ducks are quite literally embodiment of tenacity in any farmstead. They simply don't die to anything that chickens would
Farmer Tyler Ranch says if your hay bale is large, the cows have to pull the hay out of the feeder and much of it falls on the ground.

Don't agree to putting the dog down, but should be kept away from poultry
Yeah
I called this, sadly.
Or rehome, if it's not a good fit
It's called life. Sorry for your loss.
It's not the duck or Joey's fault. Joey was doing what she was taught to do. The duck was protective over its space and mate. It completely comes down to how you house the duck and train Joey which falls on you. Both situations should've been handled way better. You set Joey and the duck up for failure. Ok we live and learn I know you want nothing but the best for your animals take care you all have a great week 👍♥️😊🗝️🇺🇸
i feel bad for you all im sorry about your loss Junior will be with us in heart and to the day your channel dies.
Thanks for showing us this video. Even if you get some hate. You just didn't know.
For know Trainning Joey has to be done
Why does this have anything to do with if the dog is good or bad? Good dogs have a prey drive too.
I am sorry for the loss of your Junior. I remember when he hatched ❤ I have nothing to say regarding Joey because she is not mine and I do NOT know her. you do and you will do what is best for your family, as always
❤❤❤ ck from Sacramento❤️❤️❤️
It is nobodies fault! They are animals! Life happens and we do the best we can!
I Blame Both The Dog And You 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I can't fully blame the dog for what happened to the duck - it felt like it was bound to happen, and sadly a farm animal had lost its life in the process.
Sorry for your loss.
I just love your family😢😢✌🏽
You guys always take care of your animals. You can make the best decision for your farm. I would not blame Joey
Well crap happens. JOEY'S high energy was bound to get her in trouble sooner or later. Aggressive ducks ( or any critter) usually get themselves in trouble sooner or later as well.
Sorry about Junior the duck. May he rest in duck heaven peace. LOVE ALL that U ALL do. See U on your next video. Cheers !! Bye Junior...🐔🐓😜🐔🙏😍😆🐣🙏🙏😘🐤
this is so sad 😢
So sorry for your loss
Hope you get those offspring. Real memories there.
Animals are animals, I'm not surprised. Dont think yall did anything wrong. It just is how farm life goes.
How many chickens do you have? , sorry about junior 😢😢are dog is also protective of us, we had a mongoose problem he coat 6 and more of are chickens
I just saw a vid where he hatched rare chickens and he broke The shells it was very visiable and one chick died
sorry for your loss
Sorry for yall loss, hope yall doing fine ,Goodbye Junior
Given how endangered the hook bills are it might be wise going forward to be more careful.
